The What the Community is Viewing section on the Front Page.

What the Community is Viewing was a section on the Front Page that existed before Scratch 2.0. It showed three random projects from the ten most viewed projects which were under four days old. Three new projects were chosen from the 10 that were currently the top viewed projects every time the page is refreshed. It was removed due to the fact that Scratch 2.0 counts views by the number of Green Flag clicks during the current page load, so it would be possible for people to cheat by just clicking the Green Flag over and over again.[1]

It was the bottom row of the front page, before it got removed. The current bottom row on the front page after the 2.0 release is "What the Community is Loving".

History

Name Changes

This section was originally the second to last on the front page, and was called "Top Viewed Projects" at the time.[2]

Sometime between April and May 2007, the name was shortened to simply "Top Viewed."[3]

In July 2007, the name was changed to "Top Viewed Lately", and it became the last section on the Front Page.[4]

In November 2009, the Scratch Team gave the section its final title, "What the Community is Viewing".[5]

Removal

During the transition to Scratch 2.0, the Scratch Team changed how views were counted; following the change, each click on the Green Flag counts as a view. "What the Community is Viewing" did not make the transition.[6]

Some users have suggested that the row be re-added.[7][8] However, this has not been done as it would require the Scratch Team to implement some form of protection against users repeatedly clicking the Green Flag on the same project.[9]
