Actually, the Wiki did have open registrations for about 10 minutes when it was created before they had time to shut it off. (Scratchteam wasn't snappy enough, though)

Yes, but it took time to get it all ready. JSO had to make a custom account approval page.

Why couldn't they just use the one provided by MediaWiki? The one we use now is based on that.

It was directly integrated with the Scratch account, no confirmation codes or anything. And besides, barely anyone knew about it at the time.

For one, there's no real need. Few scratch team members are actively involved with the wiki, and those who are can just use their own accounts, so there isn't any confusion about who made the edit.
