Scratch Connecting Worlds articles

Hi MartinWollenweber! I've started writing an article on the Scratch Connecting Worlds conference on this wiki, and it's based on the article in the DACH-Scratch wiki. However, since I don't speak German, I've had to use a machine translation of that article. Spanish and French Wiki

I set up a translation "workshop" for the Spanish Scratch Wiki and the French Scratch Wiki. If any Scratchers from those languages or other languages want to make a wiki in their own language, they can try translating everything there and then putting it on their wiki. MediaWiki Problem

I've successfully set up MediaWiki locally, and I've installed the Scratch Skin. However, there seems to be a small issue, and I was wondering if you could look:

I'm no expert sys-op of media-wiki, normally de:user:akhof does this job at our wikis, but he is on vacation in Scotland with his class this week. So you have to wait or find it out yourself, sorry.

Update: I got the problem fixed! Apparently the github Scratch wiki skin is flawed. The problem is that this code (in ScratchWikiSkin.php):

Quick Question

I remember earlier there was a suggestion of having a bot that connected articles by inter wiki. Why was this rejected again?
If you forget how it would work, the bot would see the [de:Scratch Cat] tag on the English Scratch Cat page, and then add [en:Scratch Cat] to the DACH page (if it wasn't already there).

Yes, I made this suggestion at cp long time ago and this bot, that they also use at wikipedia, could help us a lot. But international wiki was not so developed at that time and I didn't push that idea, so although the thread got some positve reactions it got archived and forgotten after a while like so manny others :-( but now we could finaly do it, cause there are some bot developers interested in helping international scratch wikis :-)

I'm currently making an interwiki bot, so yay! :-)

What do you think would be the best rule for creating an interwiki link?

1). There is a single interwiki from article 1 to 2, so article 2 should have the interwiki.

2). There are interwikis from article 1 to article 3 and from article 2 to article 3, so there should be interwikis connecting all articles.

Maybe you have a different idea?

I think you need both rules (1) and (2) to have an optimal bot. Problem is that there could be inconstancy that must be solved by a human. At Wikipedia they have bots for that matter since years, so a optimal solution should be foundable there.

So far my Interwiki bot can detect pages that need interwikis added and pages that need interwikis removed. Here's an image showing that:

However my interwiki bot does not handle interwiki links to redirects. If you look back at the image, you'll see the interwiki bot wants to add interwikis to de:Szene, which is a redirect. Also, I have no way yet to handle interwiki conflicts. (Example: de:Scratch Katze and de:Scratch Kat both interwiki to en:Scratch Cat. Which do you use?)
Hopefully I can get those features added in the next several days.

Great! Do you use existing code as a base? Couldn't it be, that we "invent the wheel for a second time"? There must bee real good solutions at Wikipedia and other international Mediawikis. Did you spent some time to investigate that? Do you cooperate with user:jvvg about that matter? Did you see my thread at his talk-page, specially the last posts about experienced experts that somehow could be connected to the scratch-world, and that we could ask for help? What do you think about that? I will not contact these experts on my own, because I don't got the time to go deep in that matter, but if you will I would do.

I found that too. That's why I was coming back. Pywikibot seems to be the answer to the interwiki problem (and it has some other neat features too).

On that note, I'll try setting up Pywikibot sometime soon and test it on my local mediawiki.

By the way, yes, I did cooperate with jvvg. I gave him some updates on my bot progress several times. Although it looks like we won't need my Java bot anymore.

Filipino Scratch Wiki

Recently the Filipino Scratch Wiki got four volunteers, the minimum to start a new Wiki. However, I don't think any of them have MediaWiki experience (although I am looking into that). Would it be best to wait for the Test Wiki, or process them the old way?

It would be best to wait for the test wiki, but perhaps we should do the "create account process" for the Filipino user manually if jvvg is not ready with the automatic accounting system there.
We also should transfer all the English wiki templates (+ picture files) to the test-wiki by a simple "transfer-bot" so an English article can bey copied and translated there very easy, without getting to deep in Wikimedia-technologies
I made you admin an bureaucrat there and hope you make a fast start.(see http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:Log/rights ) Feel free to test your ideas and even to create the accounts or the Filipino user. But you must coach them to use only a special "language-area" and so on.
Please feel free to change http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki anyway you think it helps to reach our goal of creating more real working international scratch wikis. It's still experimental, so changes can be made fast and informal until it is established.
Please try to coordinate your activities with user:jvvg , user:akhof (today he promised my to try to overcome his shyness to communicate in English, I hope he edits her more often) , user:LiFayTheGoblin (I hate Lifay's username...I always type it wrong so it gets red...but you now that I refer to our Linda from Germany ;-) and me, but don't wait until somebody tells you "do it", just inform and cooperate with the other coaches. b) On that note, I think Pywikibot can easily transfer templates from one wiki to another. I'll look into that when I finally get Pywikibot set up (which will probably be in a couple of days more).

a) 3) I understand everybody who wants to build new things on their own, but "Reusing/Remixing" good/proven solutions is much faster than inventing it always again ;-)

c) 5) yes, because in the german wiki we normaly get an eMail if you write on our talk-pages or viewed-pages.

6) That also is the reason we would like the eMail-adress to be a mandatory input in the auto acounting proccesss.

7) I understood that in the english wiki it's not common to register your eMail-Adress and that it's missing in the accounting proccess. Is that right? What do you and the other Admins and EWs think about that?

b) Yes, that is right. Emails don't seem necessary on the English Wiki because all communication is handled by talk pages and Scratch profile pages. (Although the english admins/ew sometimes use email to contact the Bureaucrat Scmb1.) Why does the DACH wiki use emails instead of talk pages?

c) I'll try asking this question to jvvg and KrIsMa (the only other active admins/ew) and will post their replies here.

I was hoping to have a page that lists currently created (or testing) Scratch wikis so that wiki-translate volunteers would know which wikis were already created or not. de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch has lots of extra links and information that are not needed for a wiki-translate volunteer. Interwiki

I am fairly new to the Wiki, and you seemed like the best person to ask about Interwiki, so I thought I'd talk to you. If this is the wrong place to be asking such questions, I am very sorry.

Anyway, what is interwiki? Is there a help page (I couldn't find one)? Should I add the interwiki code to the bottom of all articles, or is that not the purpose? Does interwiki translate the article to another language and then create an article that updates and translates itself?

Thanks for any answers you can provide.

I'm not MartinWollenweber, but I know about inter wiki, so hopefully you don't mind if I reply.

Interwiki is a way of linking an article in multiple languages together. Check the page Scratch Cat. Do you see how on the left it says "Deustch", "Bahasa Indonesia", ect... Try clicking on one of those links. It takes you to Scratch Cat in that language.

I actually am not sure if there is a help page... (Although I have a small "guide" at the bottom of my sandbox.) Either way, Interwiki does not translate an article. An Interwiki is simple a link.

I remenber that you urgently wanted to build a Wiki in Nigerian(Igbo) and we decided not to create it because there seems only to be a "one person community". BTW: That's nearly what user:Rumanti did in Indonesia: First she was only one person, but she edited the indo-wiki nearly every day and as time goes by there were more poeople from indonesia editing the wiki. Test Scratch Wiki: Login and the Homepage

Hi! Though I am not fluent in any written languages other than English, I'd like to be able to help out on the Test Scratch Wiki (that is if help is being welcomed).

I noticed that when the logo on the Test Wiki is clicked, it leads to an error page (view able here), saying that the page was deleted. Maybe that could be fixed?

I'm also curious as to the status of accounts on the Test wiki. When I went to leave a message on the CP there, I was prompted to login. When doing so, I could not get in. Do I have an account on the Test wiki, or do I have to request one? If I do have an account, would there be a reason I couldn't login?

What ways can an English only speaker help out on the Test wiki? I saw that ErnieParke had made a to do list on the CP there, which consisted mainly of transporting images and templates from this wiki to the Test wiki (though I think he is doing that with a bot now).

The logo/link error is caused by the fact that the main page was moved. After a bit of research, I got that fixed.

Accounts are currently hand approved. Jvvg is working on a system where users can apply for accounts. Once that is done, we should almost be ready to invite new people.

As for helping, there are some places you can help. What could we add to make it easier for Scratchers to join? And ideas? Currently the front page is the default "You installed MediaWiki, Yay!" It needs to be organized into something more helpful and useful. Maybe there are some really good help pages we could transfer? Maybe there could be a welcome to the Wiki tutorial? (I added a few of these things to the To-Do list.)

@MartinWollenweber: Am I commenting too much on your talk page?

@Ernie: I'm really happy about all that activity and interest in the test-scratch-wiki, but I would prefer not always to be in the center of these activities ;-) Also it's important for me that account requests to the test-scratch wiki do not come to my eMail-address (there were already some), but via the automatic accounting system. I love to start systems that run by themselves and are not dependent on my help: I got lots of work to do with my company and my family (6 people!!!) and already involve much more in Scratch than I should do (I'm not in teaching as profession like many other adult Scratchers, it's only a hobby!)...I would like you to be very active regarding international wikis without the need of my activity (but I know that I will still do more than I should ;-) I hope that you can understand that right and so positive like I meant it, even if I can't express it as perfect like a native English speaker would do. Thank you very much in advance.

Could you change ja:User:Kaaramochi to User:Kaaramochi ? Their name is not alphabet K, it is kelvin, and they need to change it. No one is Japanese bureaucrat, so I requested to you.

You can only create a new user Kaaramochi, because I don't know a way to change the name of a user who made edits. As far ad I know ja:user:Jp86143 is Admin, see http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test-Scratch-Wiki:Watch

Renaming users isn't possible without a MediaWiki extension, the installation of which would require server access. I'm afraid Kaaramochi will have to do with their current username, or make a new account.

I don't see the difference between Kaaramochi and Kaaramochi, though...

The PyWikiBot portion is trustworthy. Just to be safe, is there a chance to see the Python code?

You could ask in S:CP but I don't think there's a chance of getting EW without election. Most EWs have been authors with lots of edits before getting voted: You have to gain and to proove experiance and trustworthiness to the community to get voted. Also correct spelling could probably help.

The missing block list

Recently, I noticed that there is no block list. This broke links everywhere including formal help pages. Since you host the servers, can you recreate it?

Not publicizing blocks is in keeping with Scratch policy. However, the relevant discussion on the Wiki is at this location. Although that was specifically about a template to put on blocked users' userpages, the same reasoning applies to the block list itself. The discussion specific to the block list is at this location.

User:Mtwoll is a redirect that by the Guidelines should be deleted, but it has been made as an exception. Why don't you protect it?

He doesn't actually have the "mtwoll" account on the English wiki. However, he has it on all other wikis, and that redirect exists for convenient interwiki linking between his many userpages.

Great! Just apply for a test scratch wiki account and you can start imedeately. Tere is no formal process: Just try to help the newbies at the test scratch wiki and motivate international scratchers to help (perhaps at their forums). Most active in helping the international scratch wikis are kenny2scrath, MakeTheBrainHappy and (some time ago most active) ErnieParke.

I apriciate your help very much! hu: is realy a bit of a problem: A Hungarien teacher asked me and LifayTheGoblin 2013 at the European Scratch Conference in Amsterdam to set it up and fast we had many users, I think mostely of the same hungarian organization (a school or something). But they didn't edit enough, perhaps because we could not coach them at that time. So no HU community could evolve and the HU scratch wiki was like dead for many years. Do you speak Hungarian? One additinal thing could be, to look to enlarge and increase the quality of:

„Interwiki in CP“ just means to link the Community Portals of Wikis of different languages by an Interwiki link that appears at the left border menu. Why doesn’t that work like in every content article that has an interewiki link and how can we change that? For details see:

Depending on our international guest the Onlinemeetings language is german or english: So you'll have no languageproblem. Sure! I only corrected the link I was referring to, since that's the only one that's dead as of now. However, the ones that I didn't fix have the possibility to become dead, since they don't use {{Forum Archive}}. Did you want me to fix those as well, or do you just want to cross that bridge when you come to it? After all, it will probably be a while before scratcharchive.asun.co becomes dead. Also, if I fixed the links that don't use {{Forum Archive}} and have link text, it would probably require me to change the text a bit as {{Forum Archive}} doesn't seem to have a parameter for link text (or we could add it as a parameter).
