Scratch Connecting Worlds articles
Hi MartinWollenweber! I've started writing an article on the Scratch Connecting Worlds conference on this wiki, and it's based on the article in the DACH-Scratch wiki. However, since I don't speak German, I've had to use a machine translation of that article. If you wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate it if you would check my interpretation of the translation and correct my errors. Thanks!

- Hi Technoboy! I appriciate having an article about Scratch2013BCN, but using a english translation of http://scratch-dach.info/index.php?title=Scratch_Connecting_Worlds_2013_in_Barcelona is a bit funy, because we translated the content of http://scratch2013bcn.org/ to german, to build up our article. The additional input is about our session on internationalization of Scratch-Wiki and is there also in english. Thanks for retlanslating our translation ;-)

Spanish Wiki
I saw you told Turkey3 about some stuff and I wanted to say I know a Spanish speaking Scratcher who doesn't know English, but is experienced with Scratch. I don't really know Spanish. I was wondering if you knew any. Maybe you could help start the Spanish Scratch Wiki. Btw, the user is SusanaRiosSuanes.

Wikipedia links
You know, you can link to WP articles by just doing wikipedia:Squeak Smalltalk, because WP is in our Interwiki table, just not as another language.

Spanish and French Wiki
I set up a translation "workshop" for the Spanish Scratch Wiki and the French Scratch Wiki. If any Scratchers from those languages or other languages want to make a wiki in their own language, they can try translating everything there and then putting it on their wiki. I've also shared it with you via Email.

MediaWiki Problem
I've successfully set up MediaWiki locally, and I've installed the Scratch Skin. However, there seems to be a small issue, and I was wondering if you could look:

If you don't know what's happening, could you show it to someone who might? Thank you if you help!
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:34, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'm no expert sys-op of media-wiki, normally de:user:akhof does this job at our wikis, but he is on vacation in Scotland with his class this week. So you have to wait or find it out yourself, sorry.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 11:47, 28 September 2015 (UTC)- Update: I got the problem fixed! Apparently the github Scratch wiki skin is flawed. The problem is that this code (in ScratchWikiSkin.php):
<? foreach ($this->data['content_actions'] as $key => $tab):?> <?=$this->makeListItem($key, $tab)?> <? endforeach?>
- Should be:
<?php foreach ($this->data['content_actions'] as $key => $item) { echo$this->makeListItem($key, $item); } ?>
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:42, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Ernie, I'm not really deep inside sysop-administration of our wikis (I got all rights but no time ;-). Mainly de:user:akhof does that. So I will give your questions to him and he will surely try to answer it when he's back from vacation next week.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 06:04, 29 September 2015 (UTC)- I know. I was telling you that I had foxed my problem. I do not need help. :)

Other Problems
I did not get an account email for the Dutch or Netherlands wiki. Should I have gotten one?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:24, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- You should have gotten it, but I will let the NL-wiki resend the password to you.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 11:35, 30 September 2015 (UTC)- I still have not gotten the emails. Are you sure you are using the correct email address?
- By the way, in this page, it appears you put "admin" and "EW" next to users with that status. I wanted to tell you that I am an admin on the English Scratch Wiki.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:52, 1 October 2015 (UTC)- Hi Ernie, the table is not perfect, but as you are now at least author at the DACH-Wiki, feel free to correct everything directly there :-) Nearly every German author talks English so you could communicate with everybody by just using English instead of german at talk pages. I will suggest the German community to give every interwiki-author of the English wiki the same state (EW oder admin) as he has there. Problem is we don't had the EW state at the German wiki: You could help user:LiFaytheGoblin and user:jvvg to implement and use it, please contact them, they are also admin at the DACH wiki.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 07:09, 3 October 2015 (UTC)- Now that I can log into the DACH wiki, I did that. It's fixed!
- Also, I'll see if I can help jvvg with the EM status.

Quick Question
I remember earlier there was a suggestion of having a bot that connected articles by inter wiki. Why was this rejected again?
If you forget how it would work, the bot would see the [de:Scratch Cat] tag on the English Scratch Cat page, and then add [en:Scratch Cat] to the DACH page (if it wasn't already there).
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:02, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I made this suggestion at cp long time ago and this bot, that they also use at wikipedia, could help us a lot. But international wiki was not so developed at that time and I didn't push that idea, so although the thread got some positve reactions it got archived and forgotten after a while like so manny others :-( but now we could finaly do it, cause there are some bot developers interested in helping international scratch wikis :-)
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 06:02, 1 October 2015 (UTC)- I was interested in that too... I don't imagine it would be hard to set up.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:52, 1 October 2015 (UTC)- I would appreciate that: user:jvvg maybe could manage that, I gave him already access to all international wikis as admin and via FTP. He just set up ConfirmAccounts at the DACH scratch wiki, see: de:GP#Das_Plugin_ConfirmAccounts_wurde_installiert
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 00:00, 2 October 2015 (UTC)- I'm currently making an interwiki bot, so yay! :-)
- What do you think would be the best rule for creating an interwiki link?
- 1). There is a single interwiki from article 1 to 2, so article 2 should have the interwiki.
- 2). There are interwikis from article 1 to article 3 and from article 2 to article 3, so there should be interwikis connecting all articles.
- Maybe you have a different idea?
- Edit: I found a helpful article: link
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:11, 3 October 2015 (UTC)- I think you need both rules (1) and (2) to have an optimal bot. Problem is that there could be inconstancy that must be solved by a human. At Wikipedia they have bots for that matter since years, so a optimal solution should be foundable there.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 07:00, 3 October 2015 (UTC)- If we do rule #1, rule #2 would be followed too. I'll look into this more.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 15:56, 3 October 2015 (UTC)- Great! Hope you manage it, to create us such a interwiki-bot somehow.

Progress update!
So far my Interwiki bot can detect pages that need interwikis added and pages that need interwikis removed. Here's an image showing that:
link to image
However my interwiki bot does not handle interwiki links to redirects. If you look back at the image, you'll see the interwiki bot wants to add interwikis to de:Szene, which is a redirect. Also, I have no way yet to handle interwiki conflicts. (Example: de:Scratch Katze and de:Scratch Kat both interwiki to en:Scratch Cat. Which do you use?)
Hopefully I can get those features added in the next several days.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:34, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- Great! Do you use existing code as a base? Couldn't it be, that we "invent the wheel for a second time"? There must bee real good solutions at Wikipedia and other international Mediawikis. Did you spent some time to investigate that? Do you cooperate with user:jvvg about that matter? Did you see my thread at his talk-page, specially the last posts about experienced experts that somehow could be connected to the scratch-world, and that we could ask for help? What do you think about that? I will not contact these experts on my own, because I don't got the time to go deep in that matter, but if you will I would do.

- On that note, I'll try setting up Pywikibot sometime soon and test it on my local mediawiki.
- By the way, yes, I did cooperate with jvvg. I gave him some updates on my bot progress several times. Although it looks like we won't need my Java bot anymore.

Filipino Scratch Wiki
Recently the Filipino Scratch Wiki got four volunteers, the minimum to start a new Wiki. However, I don't think any of them have MediaWiki experience (although I am looking into that). Would it be best to wait for the Test Wiki, or process them the old way?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 17:42, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
- It would be best to wait for the test wiki, but perhaps we should do the "create account process" for the Filipino user manually if jvvg is not ready with the automatic accounting system there.
- We also should transfer all the English wiki templates (+ picture files) to the test-wiki by a simple "transfer-bot" so an English article can bey copied and translated there very easy, without getting to deep in Wikimedia-technologies
- I made you admin an bureaucrat there and hope you make a fast start.(see http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:Log/rights ) Feel free to test your ideas and even to create the accounts or the Filipino user. But you must coach them to use only a special "language-area" and so on.
- Please feel free to change http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki anyway you think it helps to reach our goal of creating more real working international scratch wikis. It's still experimental, so changes can be made fast and informal until it is established.
- Please try to coordinate your activities with user:jvvg , user:akhof (today he promised my to try to overcome his shyness to communicate in English, I hope he edits her more often) , user:LiFayTheGoblin (I hate Lifay's username...I always type it wrong so it gets red...but you now that I refer to our Linda from Germany ;-) and me, but don't wait until somebody tells you "do it", just inform and cooperate with the other coaches. Please have a look at User_talk:Jvvg#Test-Scratch-Wiki_is_online.21 and get involved ;-)
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 20:36, 11 October 2015 (UTC)- a) I will look into it more. I was a bit preoccupied earlier with making my own Interwiki bot. ;-)
- b) On that note, I think Pywikibot can easily transfer templates from one wiki to another. I'll look into that when I finally get Pywikibot set up (which will probably be in a couple of days more).
- c) Would the German wiki be the best way to communicate user:akhof and User:LiFaytheGoblin?
- d)I currently use Skype to communicate with jvvg.
- e) Edit: Do you know of a page that lists all of the interwikis (and doesn't have lots of other text)?
- f) Edit2: I started work on a page that should help transition people into the Test Scratch Wiki. Can you look at it? See: Link
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:57, 12 October 2015 (UTC)- Hi Ernie,
- 1) I realy love that your feedback is alway so fast.
- 2) Could we give the question/matters/points of our posts cardinal number/alphabetic letters, so we could answer it more effectiv? Please excuse me for demonstrating it in your post above and my answer, but else I/You would have to repeat many parts of the posts. I answered your letters and gave new numbers you can answer my numbers while giving your points new letters with each post, so communication could be very effective.
- a) 3) I understand everybody who wants to build new things on their own, but "Reusing/Remixing" good/proven solutions is much faster than inventing it always again ;-)
- b) 4) yes, that would help. I am looking forward to your result!
- c) 5) yes, because in the german wiki we normaly get an eMail if you write on our talk-pages or viewed-pages.
- 6) That also is the reason we would like the eMail-adress to be a mandatory input in the auto acounting proccesss.
- 7) I understood that in the english wiki it's not common to register your eMail-Adress and that it's missing in the accounting proccess. Is that right? What do you and the other Admins and EWs think about that?
- d) 8) We use G+ for our weekly online meeting, and we write protocols about it, see de:SC (try to use google translate to read it)
- e) 9) Do think of something like de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch?
- f) 10) I had a look at it and I think that's a pretty good start that will evolve while using.
- 11) We should not keep that communication between us two, but having it at a community portal to involve other interested people.Else we always have to say: Look it up at the talk pages of jvvg, ErnieParke, KrIsMa...see:
- But I saw that somebody hide our cp-talk (btw: the #-jumpig to sub-threds did not work anymore because they were hidden) and I understood that it got too long for general interst at cp. A solution could be to establish an own cp at the test-wiki that's only about international scratch wiki cooperation and to just inform at the english cp that there is such a "special interest" cp. What do you think?
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 05:59, 12 October 2015 (UTC)- 2) a) I used to organize comments like this before. It felt really organized, so sure.
- 7)
- b) Yes, that is right. Emails don't seem necessary on the English Wiki because all communication is handled by talk pages and Scratch profile pages. (Although the english admins/ew sometimes use email to contact the Bureaucrat Scmb1.) Why does the DACH wiki use emails instead of talk pages?
- c) I'll try asking this question to jvvg and KrIsMa (the only other active admins/ew) and will post their replies here.
- 9) d) Somewhat. I was hoping to have a page that lists currently created (or testing) Scratch wikis so that wiki-translate volunteers would know which wikis were already created or not. de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch has lots of extra links and information that are not needed for a wiki-translate volunteer. Is there anything better that comes to mind? If not, I'll try creating a page.
- 11) e) I understand. Having most of the international wiki talk in one place would be helpful. Would you mind if I created it?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 13:28, 12 October 2015 (UTC)- b) 1) You are right, it could work with talk-pages, if everybody looks at his regulary...but that's not always the case... so it helps to have eMail additionally for important or time-restricted things and to talk to people that don't visit thier talk-page anymore...at DACH we ar simple used to it...
- c) 2) ok
- d) 3) I understand and I got no better idea. Please create that page
- e) 4) make it so:-) What do yo think about copying the English cp conversation about international wikis and other related things there? (perhaps even our conversation here)
- 5) I'm really looking forward the test-scratch-wiki to start and to invite the first people there....
- 6) btw. What's the international language-code for Filipino? Perhaps we should build a few pages (the homepage) for them in English to demonstrate how it's done?
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 14:33, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 14:33, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- 11) e) I understand. Having most of the international wiki talk in one place would be helpful. Would you mind if I created it?
- Hi Ernie,
6) a) I looked up the Filipino language code, and it is "fil" There is no official two letter language code.
3) b) Sure will!
4) c) That sounds good, although do we need to copy our entire conversation? For now I will mention "feel free to change http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki". Would you like to add anything to that list?
d) In response to the email question, jvvg said "when the email system works you can use it to get notified about a few things"
e) KrIsMa said "but i do feel like the email functionality got removed when we switched to the new skin [I don't know]" "i used to get emails from watching pages""emails for pages that are on your watched pages ... that got edited ... even better i ... if your account gets accepted (that would be a cool functionality"

Interwiki
I am fairly new to the Wiki, and you seemed like the best person to ask about Interwiki, so I thought I'd talk to you. If this is the wrong place to be asking such questions, I am very sorry.
Anyway, what is interwiki? Is there a help page (I couldn't find one)? Should I add the interwiki code to the bottom of all articles, or is that not the purpose? Does interwiki translate the article to another language and then create an article that updates and translates itself?
Thanks for any answers you can provide.

- I'm not MartinWollenweber, but I know about inter wiki, so hopefully you don't mind if I reply.
- Interwiki is a way of linking an article in multiple languages together. Check the page Scratch Cat. Do you see how on the left it says "Deustch", "Bahasa Indonesia", ect... Try clicking on one of those links. It takes you to Scratch Cat in that language.
- I actually am not sure if there is a help page... (Although I have a small "guide" at the bottom of my sandbox.) Either way, Interwiki does not translate an article. An Interwiki is simple a link.
- Make sense?

JayceeMinecraft (talk | contribs) 17:49, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, I'am happy that yoiu ask again. You are one of whom I thougt when writing (here):
- Those restrictions surely sometimes kept of people that could have been successful if we only had given them a chance to prove it
- Its also frustrating for potential authors to wait so long for a start, or to hear "no, we don't believe you could be successful because..."
- I remenber that you urgently wanted to build a Wiki in Nigerian(Igbo) and we decided not to create it because there seems only to be a "one person community". Now you can startat http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/ and try to show that you can build a wiki and a community in Nigerian(Igbo). BTW: That's nearly what user:Rumanti did in Indonesia: First she was only one person, but she edited the indo-wiki nearly every day and as time goes by there were more poeople from indonesia editing the wiki. I made you an account at test-scratch-wiki should have sent your password by mail to your adress that I still knew) and copied our conversation at your new talk-Page there: http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/User_talk:JayceeMinecraft
- Please have in MInd that the test-scratch-wiki is not only for Nigerian(Igbo) but also for other language communities: So all Nigerian(Igbo) pages must be in a separate wiki-space with the Nigerian(Igbo)-Sign in front of it. Surly you will get help. I'm looking very forward to the result and would be happy to create a separate Nigerian(Igbo)-Wiki, after you demonstrated that it's possible in the Test-Scratch-Wiki. Good Luck!

Test Scratch Wiki: Login and the Homepage
Hi! Though I am not fluent in any written languages other than English, I'd like to be able to help out on the Test Scratch Wiki (that is if help is being welcomed).
I noticed that when the logo on the Test Wiki is clicked, it leads to an error page (view able here), saying that the page was deleted. Maybe that could be fixed?
I'm also curious as to the status of accounts on the Test wiki. When I went to leave a message on the CP there, I was prompted to login. When doing so, I could not get in. Do I have an account on the Test wiki, or do I have to request one? If I do have an account, would there be a reason I couldn't login?
What ways can an English only speaker help out on the Test wiki? I saw that ErnieParke had made a to do list on the CP there, which consisted mainly of transporting images and templates from this wiki to the Test wiki (though I think he is doing that with a bot now).
Thanks for any help you can give me.

- The logo/link error is caused by the fact that the main page was moved. After a bit of research, I got that fixed.
- Accounts are currently hand approved. Jvvg is working on a system where users can apply for accounts. Once that is done, we should almost be ready to invite new people.
- As for helping, there are some places you can help. What could we add to make it easier for Scratchers to join? And ideas? Currently the front page is the default "You installed MediaWiki, Yay!" It needs to be organized into something more helpful and useful. Maybe there are some really good help pages we could transfer? Maybe there could be a welcome to the Wiki tutorial? (I added a few of these things to the To-Do list.)
- @MartinWollenweber: Am I commenting too much on your talk page?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 02:11, 21 October 2015 (UTC)- @Ernie: I'm really happy about all that activity and interest in the test-scratch-wiki, but I would prefer not always to be in the center of these activities ;-) Also it's important for me that account requests to the test-scratch wiki do not come to my eMail-address (there were already some), but via the automatic accounting system. I love to start systems that run by themselves and are not dependent on my help: I got lots of work to do with my company and my family (6 people!!!) and already involve much more in Scratch than I should do (I'm not in teaching as profession like many other adult Scratchers, it's only a hobby!)...I would like you to be very active regarding international wikis without the need of my activity (but I know that I will still do more than I should ;-) I hope that you can understand that right and so positive like I meant it, even if I can't express it as perfect like a native English speaker would do. Thank you very much in advance.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 07:55, 21 October 2015 (UTC)- @ErnieParke: Thanks for getting the home page fixed! So I don't have an account yet and can't make any edits? Okay.

Please add quotes from the Videos like I did it in my revision of Ernies word-change that imho did't fit. Request:account name changing
Could you change ja:User:Kaaramochi to User:Kaaramochi ? Their name is not alphabet K, it is kelvin, and they need to change it. No one is Japanese bureaucrat, so I requested to you.
Thank you very much.
Apple502j (talk | contribs) 10:22, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- You can only create a new user Kaaramochi, because I don't know a way to change the name of a user who made edits. As far ad I know ja:user:Jp86143 is Admin, see http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test-Scratch-Wiki:Watch
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 10:54, 30 August 2017 (UTC)- Renaming users isn't possible without a MediaWiki extension, the installation of which would require server access. I'm afraid Kaaramochi will have to do with their current username, or make a new account.
- I don't see the difference between Kaaramochi and Kaaramochi, though...

- What you're saying the bot will do, is all useful activities. That looks good.
- The PyWikiBot portion is trustworthy. Just to be safe, is there a chance to see the Python code?
- Finally, make sure your bot has a userpage. It should list the bot's responsibilities, and that you are its owner.

The missing block list
Recently, I noticed that there is no block list. This broke links everywhere including formal help pages. Since you host the servers, can you recreate it?

- @jvg: can you please link the discussion/decission about that matter?
MartinWollenweber Talk Contribs Directory 22:33, 29 June 2018 (UTC)- Not publicizing blocks is in keeping with Scratch policy. However, the relevant discussion on the Wiki is at this location. Although that was specifically about a template to put on blocked users' userpages, the same reasoning applies to the block list itself. The discussion specific to the block list is at this location.

MartinWollenweber Talk Contribs Directory 22:31, 7 July 2018 (UTC)- Banana, thanks for your concern, but did you read the post or the redirect? It's an exception to the guideline - he controls that account anyway.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:42, 8 July 2018 (UTC)- Then why'd he need that account? 07:24, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

It shouldn't be protected at all - it's perfectly fine without protection. (Plus, the abuse filter won't let New Wikians edit it anyway).

Hi Martin,
Just so you know, the forum link on your userpage (http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2373) is a dead link; it may be a good idea to insert {{Forum Archive|2373}}
instead (which will link to https://scratcharchive.asun.co/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2373). This will ensure you're always using the most up-to-date version of the forum archive.
