meet?

Hey, I'm going to be in Massachusetts around the last week of June/first week of July. Want to ask your parent(s) about getting together? [I am bending over backwards not to seem to be suggesting that you and I arrange it between ourselves!] Have them email me, bh@cs.berkeley.edu. —Brian Harvey (talk) 18:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! Awesome!!! :D (And I bet Chrischb and Jonathanpb are jealous again, just like when I went to the Scratch Day @ MIT :P) I'd love to do that! Other than those words, I'm just going to email you, to keep things secret ;)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:18, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Make sure to follow bharvey's request to get your parents involved. It might not send the right message to other community members if it seems like people are meeting without parental involvement. --
andresmh (talk | contribs) 22:56, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
YOU GET TO MEET ALL THESE BRILLIANT SCRATCHERS I'M SO JEALOUS WHAT DID I DO TO BE STUCK IN NEW ZEALAND!!!
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I WANNA MEET EVERYONE TOO... Dx
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:24, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah yeah yeah, I'm doing that. BTW - where haz andres been on skype? :o
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 23:16, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
@Chrischb and Jonathanpb: Lol.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 19:33, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
@Chris and Jon: You're not the only ones... I live in Britain... :(

But I prefer Britain to America...

The help pages

Not all of them have been created... and apparently we're using the official text. If you have the time, could you go and create the help pages? Or just tell me where I get the official text... ;)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:58, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, it is a lengthy thing to copy, so it you could do it, I'd appreciate it. The list of mediawiki pages to copy, and the links to them are here. Now before you go copying all of them, I have a couple tips:
1. Remove the "PD Help Page" at the top of each page, as well as the "x" at the bottom.
2. Change any "x" links to "y"
3. For any tables that go off-screen, tell me so I can help fix it.
4. For any images, feel free to upload them, under a help image category :).
Also, I may have purposely skipped some pages because they are not necessary for this wiki - so for now, just copy the following the pages:
Managing files, Moving a page, Namespaces
ATM I'm too busy to list all of the pages right now - so you can do those for now. Remind me again tomorrow to update that list xD
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 23:48, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Created the pages... but the Namespaces one has a messed up table, and the links at the end aren't working. ^_^ And remember to list all the pages! :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Ok I fixed it. Here's some more for you to do :):
Not Navigation (see notes), New images (see notes). New pages (see notes)
For navigation, I do want an article, but I'll do it, because there's many things to change because this wiki is a bit different than the normal Wikipedia format of everything. For New images, ignore the last sentence, and change the Help:Gallery link to Help:Images#Rendering_a_gallery_of_images, and change the Help:Upload link to Help:Managing_files :). For New pages, I forgot to mention, wherever there is a bugzilla:x link, change it to mediazilla:x.
That should be good for now.
Created the help pages... anything else? :|
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:48, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh - I wasn't sure where to put the New Images and New Pages thing in the Help:Contents page, so I thought I'd ask you to do it. :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:50, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

About account creation...

Account requests are done on a new page - can you please tell me how the system works? :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:30, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Ooh, Scratch Wiki secrets! :D I'm interested too... ^_^ Do bureaucrats get some message thing that you read through, or what?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Sure, I guess I'll tell you guys. With our bureaucrat accounts, we can approve accounts with another page: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/accounts/approve.php . From there, it will list all of the accounts waiting for approval, and we can either create accounts and approve each of them, or for ones we're not very sure about, we can put them on hold. Not that much to say about it.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:32, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Wow... :O
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:26, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
JSO coded it all ^_^

About anonymous editing and creating accounts by visiting

Earlier, I saw that anonymous editing would be allowed someday and possibly people could create accounts like they do with the Scratch Forums (they log onto the Scratch Website, and then simply visit the Scratch Forums). So... if this is true, do you have any idea when this will happen?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:35, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't think this is happening anytime soon. Where did you see this?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:49, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Clicky! Clicky! Clicky! :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:46, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Well those were all a long time ago. We haven't made a final decision yet.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:03, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay... :) Would you might telling me if you decide to?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:53, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Definitely! :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 01:01, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry for intruding, but I want to know too...
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:22, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
It's ok that you want to know - but I have to tell you guys sincerely and honestly, we don't have any plans for allowing anonymous editing any time soon.

About block file names

Read this - can I? :|
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:00, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Oh - sure :). Sorry for not replying to it...
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:58, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay! :D :D :D *evil grin*
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:34, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Uh oh xD
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:08, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
A question related to block file names: What are the characters I shouldn't use in file names?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:20, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry if that belonged in the Community Portal - but you're The-Whiz at wikis, so I thought I would ask here. :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:44, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not really completely sure - but for now, at least +, < , >, [, ], |, {, }.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 13:59, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Red links in the Help:Contents page

If you click Help in the navigation area, it takes you to a page with lots of red links... should we create pages to fill them?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 10:29, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

No - but believe me, Jonathanpb and I are working on them. We have to copy them from mediawiki.org, but it takes a lot longer because there are many other things, such as fixing links, uploading images, etc.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:47, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Can I help too? :|
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 00:37, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Any more help pages to create? :D :D :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:53, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

New Community Portal archive?

As the title says... :P Also: Do we have to check before making a new archive, or is it relaxed?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 00:33, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd prefer if you'd ask me - just so we don't do it too often :P So, yeah! Do everything without posts after June 24.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 02:20, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Oops - forgot to say yesterday that I finished. >_<
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:18, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Which dash to use for the tagline?

There's the hyphen, two hyphens (which is what we're using) - and then there are two proper dashes (Alt+0510 for a shorter one and Alt+0151 for a longer one). So - which one do you like the most?

From the Scratch Wiki -- made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. (Two hyphens)

From the Scratch Wiki - made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. (One hyphen)

From the Scratch Wiki – made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. (Short dash)

From the Scratch Wiki — made by Scratchers, for Scratchers. (Long dash)

:D I like the last two... the last one more. :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:34, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm guessing you're bringing this up because of the change. Yesterday I was testing because Bharvey (the super grammar expert xD) said that hyphens are just supposed to be used for connecting words, so the correct use is an em-dash (the last one). So I tested it out, but it didn't work. On the MediaWiki:Tagline page, the content was right, but on the top right below the title, it didn't look right. It literally said "From the Scratch Wiki & m d a s h ; made by Scratchers, for Scratchers." I'll try doing a couple more tests, but until then, this is all I can do :/.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 13:42, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Hmm! It seems to work now! :D Yay!
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 13:51, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Yay! :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:06, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Any more help pages to create?

:)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:07, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Oh, yes indeed! :) But perhaps you're rather approve accounts first? That's higher priority.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 14:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
The account list is clear - could you at least list the help pages that should be created? :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:50, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

:) Also - it is it something to keep private?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:14, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

:D And as Chris said - is it something to keep private? :|
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Not too much. I mean nobody else is able to do it, so I wouldn't worry much ;). But nobody has any benefit from knowing about it ;). So it's all your choice.
Okay. :D If there's an admin request should I direct the asker to you?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:20, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Or should it be discussed publicly in the Community Portal discussion page? Everyone can discuss, but there might be some flames... :/
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:24, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
For admin requests, I think you can handle them, but it would be nice to link them to me just to overview it, and look over you guys :3. And generally admin requests don't need to be in the Community Portal - only community decision things should be.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:14, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Thankies. :)
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:11, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Admin?

Hi Luciaro621! I have been an editor on the Wiki for just over a month now, I have created many new articles and I am on every single day. My grammar is usually immaculate, and if I do make I mistake it is usually corrected within seconds. It never really occurred to me before but Jonathanpb suggested that I ask you if I could be an administrator on the Wiki. So if you think that I would be good enough for that, then maybe you could consider that. If not, then that's fine, and I'll carry on being a normal editor on the Wiki. :)
WeirdF (talk | contribs)

In my opinion, WeirdF would be a good admin! He's really dedicated to the wiki, does plenty of edits, and he uses good grammar. :D
WeirdF would use the tools - I asked him, and he said yes. He even said something he would have done, had he the tools - that shows you proof right there. ;)
Please consider him, Lucario! I think he deserves to be an admin. :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:19, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
WeirdF would be great! :) His edits are of good quality, his grammar is good, and he would be ideal. :)
Hang on, this looks like we were bribed to say all this. xD We weren't...
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:20, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
I think he'd make a good Admin too.
Aidan (talk | contribs) 12:58, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for all the support guys! I really appreciate it! :)
WeirdF (talk | contribs)
Lucario621 was on yesterday, but he didn't reply. If that's because the answer is "no" then that's fine, I don't mind. I'll just carry on being a normal editor.
WeirdF (talk | contribs)
RAH RAH RAH RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH Lucario, please answer...
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:15, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Lucario, please answer! If you don't agree with making WeirdF an admin, at least say so. :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:19, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Yay! Thank you so much Lucario621! I really appreciate this... :D

However I do have a couple of questions:

  1. If I accidentally clicked "delete" would it bring up something saying "are you sure you want to delete this?" or whatever?
  2. On the Recent Changes section, next to each user there is an option which says "block." What does that do?
  3. Also on the Recent Changes section, for each recent change there is an option which says "rollback." What does that do?
    WeirdF (talk | contribs)
1. For delete, yes it would bring you to another page where would have you type a summary of why you want to delete it, and it would confirm it with you.
2. Block. What do you think that means? xD It makes you block a user so they can't edit pages, or upload files, or anything - like an IP ban basically. So DO NOT CLICK IT. We're going to have JSO change the system so only Bureaucrats can block users - but he's on a two week camp, so we'll wait for him to come back.
3. Let's say a user deletes a whole section of an article, and puts random gibberish or swear words or something. How do you revert the vandalism? Normally, you would have to go to the history of the page, edit the version of the page that was before the current version, and click save without making any changes - but with the rollback button, it is quicker - it automatically changes the current version of the page to the previous version. Only use this if you see bad vandalism, like in my example.
Good questions - I'm glad you're asking them, and not just being a curious cat and clicking them :P!
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 17:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for answering my questions! :) And thanks once again for making me an admin, it's made me very happy!
WeirdF (talk | contribs)
YAYZ WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO About restricting bans to bureaucrats: why? :P But anyway WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Do we put this in wiki news?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 00:26, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
WOOOOOOOOO But why are we going to restrict bans to Bureaucrats? And can we put WeirdF's sysoping in the news? :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:35, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Andres told me so. That's why :P. As for news, I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. BUT - you guys seem like you really want to, so if you want to you can :).
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 02:58, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

You don't have to put it in the news, it's not like I've been made Lord High Commander of the Scratch Wiki or anything... :P

And also, I have another question. I know how to patrol talk page edits, but I can't seem to find and option to mark them as patrolled for the actual article... :/
WeirdF (talk | contribs)

Go to them from the Recent Changes page, I think. :/ The buttons appear at the bottom of the pages you then visit.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:12, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
But that's the thing, the option to do it only appears on talk pages for me. It still shows that certain edits are unpatrolled, but it doesn't give me the option to patrol them.
WeirdF (talk | contribs)
Hmm. I don't know. Mainly because I don't use that features (though I do generally review most of the edits on Recent Changes).
