Hi I need help
Hi! So you commented on my talk page pretty recently and provided some links to pages that need more content. I was editing my page today and adding a few things and I deleted that message I think (?) Anyway do you mind telling me some places where I can find articles that need to be added too or edited? Thank you so much!
Lbtybxc (talk | contribs) 09:48, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- The message I put was:
Enjoy!Welcome to the Scratch Wiki! I look forward to the useful edits you'll make and hope you'll have fun here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page, where you can talk about the Wiki, get my help with templates, or even ask personal questions, and more! If you need quick help with wiki markup, take a look at Scratch Wiki:Cheatsheet. You might want to go to Category:Articles to Expand to find pages that need editing. I get my inspiration from Special:RecentChanges however, so looking at that helps too. See you around, Kenny2scratch; - Oh, and why in the name of Schrödinger's cat did you post that message four times? Just asking.

In the CP...
You put this discussion from your talk page into the CP for some reason. I suspect it was because you were archiving the topic and accidently put it into the CP.
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 16:01, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- I did that to illustrate my point that talk pages are meant for personal conversations. Someone messed up the formatting though. :/
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 16:52, 5 July 2017 (UTC)- Ah I see. Sorry Ken, I assumed it was you accidently posting it on the CP while archiving.
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 20:21, 5 July 2017 (UTC)- Well I had to do some recent changes inspection to find out what went on... it's ok. FYI, it's very hard to mistake the CP for one of my archives :)
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 09:11, 6 July 2017 (UTC)- I hope that you do not mind that I used your talk page as an example. :)
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 12:10, 6 July 2017 (UTC)- It's not a problem :D

New Page I Created
Did you see the Tips Page article I made earlier today? I think it really needs some improvements, though there wasn't really too much to say for each section, really.
WolfCat67 (talk | contribs) 05:57, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 06:13, 8 July 2017 (UTC)- Thanks for making the changes. They were certainly needed, the whole article felt kind of rushed because, well... It was. PS: Don't ask me why I'm awake right now; I'm heading off to bed immediately.
WolfCat67 (talk | contribs) 06:21, 8 July 2017 (UTC)- Yeah, nothing is perfect (except for that article you made several days ago; that didn't need anything :P).Good night!

Deletion
Next time, please do not put a delete template until there has been discussion.

- A little context would be nice...
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:16, 10 July 2017 (UTC)- Oh, the category.
- There actually was discussion on that: Mitopolis suggested a "many templates" template, but the idea never went through. However, he made the category for pages with many templates, and also made a subpage on one mainspace page that had three templates. Since that idea was basically rejected, it was actually appropriate to put {{delete}} on there.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:19, 10 July 2017 (UTC)- Oh. I never saw that. When did that happen?
Cυƨтσмнαcκεя ( тαʟκ | cσптяıв ) 17:23, 10 July 2017 (UTC)- I think we are referring to Wiki Wednesday/Articles which has a brief discussion in here. However I chipped in my own opinion where I don't like the idea of it being deleted.
22:48, 10 July 2017 (UTC)- No, we’re referring to Category:Pages with Many Templates. Mitopolis suggested a new template, and made that category for it in advance. However, the template idea never went through, so that category should be deleted now.

About your bot archive system
The link doesn't work. It just brings me to an error 404 page.
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 10:43, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, that's because I renamed the repository that contained it. Sorry about that, let me fix it.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:38, 15 July 2017 (UTC)- Ok. Also, once I have done everything will it automatically detect Wikimonitor messages and move them?
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 12:59, 15 July 2017 (UTC)- Uhh, no. When you press "edit" on your talk page, if you type into the edit summary box "Moving bot messages to archive" then click somewhere else, it'll automatically remove the last WM message and save. Then, you need to navigate to your bot archive. Once you've navigated there, there's nothing else - as soon as the page loads it'll load again and the bot message will be there. See User:Kenny2scratch/Project Guides/Bot Archiver for a better explanation.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:07, 15 July 2017 (UTC)- But I mean, will i have to manually do that every time i get a bot message?
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 13:18, 15 July 2017 (UTC)- Oh, yes... there's not much you can do automatically with asynchronous XHR requests. If you want something that will automatically remove them for you, I could write something in Python that would do it.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 09:14, 16 July 2017 (UTC)- Well it's probably easier to just C+V each time...

- If you could, yes please! :D
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 09:52, 16 July 2017 (UTC)- I'll get to work then :D. My only concern is that it could be taken as a bot.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:44, 16 July 2017 (UTC)- Hmm... A bot to edit a bot... xD Anyway, if you can program it, I'm sure you would be granted permission; you're a trustworthy and active Wikian. How long does it take to request a bot?
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 14:17, 16 July 2017 (UTC)- Well, the main difficulty in successfully getting a bot approved is the reason for it to exist. I've been trying to think of something a bot could do, but WikiMonitor has taken it all.
- In this specific case, I think that me being a trustworthy Wikian is not the point - using your main account as a bot has serious repercussions, both technologically (normal user accounts have API limits) and permission-wise (it's almost bannable).
- So I think that if it were allowed, the best way to proceed is to make sure that it knows you've seen the message before archiving it - but I don't know how you check if a user has visited a page.
- I'll think about it more, but I won't start development until an admin (probably jvvg) has taken a look at the idea.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 05:52, 17 July 2017 (UTC)- What if it automatically adds your Bot Archive to your Watchlist? Then you would be notified when a new message has been added.

Recent changes patrollers like me don't actually check the watchlist :/
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 09:20, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yes but a page on your watch list shows up in bold in the RC.
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 09:30, 17 July 2017 (UTC)- I know that... I literally just removed every page off my watchlist because that bold is annoying. I just want to know if there's a way to check with the API whether someone's visited a page.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 09:31, 17 July 2017 (UTC)- Hmm... I don't know. What if it notified you if a bot message is added to the page (similar to the message you get when someone edits your talk page, but it would say something like "You have a new bot message from WikiMonitor")?
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 13:36, 17 July 2017 (UTC)- You mean something like this?

- That would require code modification, and I think that that would be absolutely considered unneeded.
- I have an idea, though: Have one section on your talk page be "You have a new message in your bot archive". When a bot message comes, automatically move it to the bot archive and move the section with a link to the archive to the bottom instead of reposting it. Makes sense?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 14:04, 17 July 2017 (UTC)- A) Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

Interesting "Cool" Template Feature
! Now, with the new template, you can get a cool cat face, with no text. Except an exclamation mark. You should add to the template a way to remove the exclamation mark, such as: {{cool|awesome|nem}} or something. "NEM" stands for "no exclamation mark". That would be a nice feature.
WolfCat67 (talk | contribs) 18:27, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
- Well I think it would just make more sense to use just the emoji with {{S|B)}} for this case.
Duckboycool (Talk | Contribs | Edits) 04:08, 20 July 2017 (UTC)- Sure, I could make it not use the exclamation mark if there's a parameter, but that means you'll have to put in the exclamation mark yourself if you pass text. Doing that anyway.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 06:50, 20 July 2017 (UTC)- Update! You can now specify what punctuation with the second parameter - so to make just the face leave both parameters blank, like so:

Question
Hey Ken, I was just wondering how to get your own personal sandbox and other "User Generated Content" if that makes any sense?
MClovers (talk | contribs) 19:21, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- You can just create the pages yourself, i.e. if you want to make a sandbox go to User:MClovers/Sandbox (redlink) and click the pencil icon then Create. I have a ton of user subpages (that's what they're called) but making them is the same process.
- Oh, and please add new topics at the bottom, not the top. The "Add Topic" option is helpful.

- I am not Ken, and I do not know python (two good starts :P), but I believe that I can answer this question. The % is the modulus operator, and it basically take's remainders. I have written extensively on this subject on my website. ;)
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 19:56, 3 August 2017 (UTC)- Yeah - % is the modulus operator - it takes the integer division remainder of the two numbers you pass. For example, 7 % 2 is 1, and 8 % 4 is 0. Normally, you would probably use it for checking if one number is evenly divisible by the other, i.e. if a % b == 0: do stuff.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:59, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- Ah, ok. Thanks! I get that bit. One thing though: I was using https://www.learnpython.org/ and it says this about String formatting:
- "Python uses C-style string formatting to create new, formatted strings. The "%" operator is used to format a set of variables enclosed in a "tuple" (a fixed size list), together with a format string, which contains normal text together with "argument specifiers", special symbols like "%s" and "%d"."
- I don't get it.
Drunken_Sailor (talk | contribs) 10:23, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- Mmph. I don’t really like that, but here’s an explanation:
- Inside a string, you put a % and then a special letter that says how you want to format this string - then after the string you add a % and the formatters.
- Put in an example:
- Yeah - % is the modulus operator - it takes the integer division remainder of the two numbers you pass. For example, 7 % 2 is 1, and 8 % 4 is 0. Normally, you would probably use it for checking if one number is evenly divisible by the other, i.e. if a % b == 0: do stuff.
print "Hello %s" % "World!"
Produces
Hello World!
- The important part, however, is what comes after the % in the string -
%s
puts it in as a string ("%s" % "a"
="a"
),%r
puts it in as a raw string ("%r" % "a"
="'a'"
),%f
puts in a formatted float ("%.2f" % 0.1357
="0.14"
)... there are many things you can do with string formatting, so you’ll probably want to take a look at documentation on the different things you can do for more info.

kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 17:40, 4 August 2017 (UTC)- Those are faster.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 02:42, 5 August 2017 (UTC)- I have no idea what happened to customhacker. (For about the past month, I have not been in places with Wi-FI where I can use Scratch)
