Problem with a file upload
Beamy68 (talk | contribs) 01:47, 12 October 2019 (UTC) I can't upload an image to my user page, it just comes up with an error:
" The action you are attempting was automatically blocked. Please read the message below for details on why.
You must enter a comment when uploading a new version of a file or editing a file page. You must also include a category when uploading new files.
If you believe that this happened in error, please contact a bureaucrat to have it fixed. A list of bureaucrats can be found here. The name of the rule that triggered this warning is described as Prevent uploads or file edits with no comment or category. "
Please help if you can, thanks!
- You need to upload the file with a comment/summary in the "Summary" box and include a category. (Read Help:Managing Files and Help:Categories)Btw, siggys go below the post, not above!

Help on Scratch
Hello. Thank you for your help on the new profile page thing. Can you help me with these things:
How to make a talk page.
How to make archives.
How to make private templates (if not possible, how can you make templates not listed in the Scratch archive of templates).
How do you talk through your mouse.
Thank you.
Legogo7777 (talk | contribs) 01:09, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, have you read the welcome tutorial yet? Talk pages are explained in more detail there. You don't need to mark every topic you create as {{not done}}, by the way - that template is only necessary if the discussion has gone on for a while and still hasn't been resolved.
- Archives are made by creating a subpage of your talk page (e.g. "User talk:Legogo7777/Archive 1") and moving all of the topics on your talk page into the subpage. After moving the topics, add {{protect|<talk page archive>}} to the top to mark it for protection (to ensure that nobody edits it).
- Regarding templates, first off: this is not Scratch. This is the Scratch Wiki. There is no "Scratch archive of templates" - there is only the list of templates on the Scratch Wiki.
- Second, all templates, no matter where, can be used by anyone anywhere (besides {{open userpage}}, which has some special magic). However, if a template is only meant to be used on your userpage, you can create it as a subpage of your userpage and simply include it like so:
{{User:Legogo7777/Template Name}}
Do not create it in the Template namespace, as that is for templates meant to be used on real Wiki pages. - "talking through your mouse" is done with the HTML
title
attribute. This:
<span title="This is the title of the element.">This is the content of the element.</span>
- Produces this:
- This is the content of the element.
- Hope that helps :)

Hello! How do you organize your pages so well?
Hi! I just want to say hi, that welcome tutorial helped me a lot. I know how to use the wiki pretty well now. Just how is your user page, talk page, and articles so organized.I've only just got the hand of the wiki. But, like how do you add pictures, make those boxes at the side, and more. Also, I'm only eight so please don't suggest to complcated stuff. Again, thanks for showing me this. Also one thing, I preveiwed this and I saw that my name was on there instead of AdeptMind. After, you tell me this I should be good. Thanks!

- Oh, and also, I saw that the top of the psge said,"Ooh! A new message from 998930". Does that mean you are on? Also, please reply to both questions on my talkpage.

TestWiki
Hello Ken, just wondering about the testwiki, i have requested an account, and am wondering if i get accepted what does it take to get sysop rights? or is that something that takes a while, correct me if i am being annoying, kind regards,
JJBullet (Talk ★ Contributions ★ 1,220 edits) 12:03, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
- You're way ahead of yourself - at least according to your account request, you speak no languages other than English, and that's one of the crucial parts of editing an other language wiki. Becoming sysop (at least in my case), in particular on the test wiki, takes a general knack of international culture, and ideally a strong intuitive familiarity with MediaWiki.
- Thanks for reminding me about the test wiki, though - I haven't checked it recently because I've been flattened by schoolwork. I appreciate your willingness to help, but at the moment it would seem you don't have the skills we're looking for (which, of course, is not to say that you can't acquire them!).

When to archive
Is there a certain size you would recommend archiving my page at? Or a certain amount of posts?
Dominic305 Talk Contribs (1,791) Scratch Directory 15:51, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
- No, just archive whenever you feel like it. I personally go with 20 topics, but KrIsMa goes with 100 and you apparently go with 15 KB. You do you.

HeLlO!
HI THERE! LONG TIME NO SEE (on wiki)
一点儿 (BTW, i think), how did you figure out your milestones?
12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 00:32, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
- (一点儿, or 一點兒 in traditional, means "a little" - "by the way" is 順便說說, or 顺便说说 in simplified.)
- I just keep track of them as they come up - Special:Editcount/Kenny2scratch lists individual edit counts for each namespace. Additionally, when I actually pass a milestone I don't usually hit it spot on, so I count back in my contribs to find the edit that actually pushed me over.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 01:35, 13 November 2019 (UTC)- (My teacher told me that 一点儿 means "by the way" and "a little". Also, why does it have "说说" at the end of what you were taught. (Double "speak").)
- (It looks like you do know simplified.....")
- Oh, dang! I have to to count back 250+ edits then!!
12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 03:41, 13 November 2019 (UTC)- Ooh, there should be something in MediaWiki for this then....
12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 03:43, 13 November 2019 (UTC) - Your teacher is mistaken, or they come from a part of China that has really weird customs. 一點兒 always means "a little" or "a little bit". 说说 is a shortening of 说一说, literally "say a say" but roughly meaning "mention".
- I don't know simplified - I used Google Translate from Chinese to traditional Chinese.
- Contributions are paginated, remember? "show at most n contributions" - choose 250, then go one page into "older 250" and count [your edit count] - 250 - [the milestone] edits down.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 03:46, 13 November 2019 (UTC)- Oof, I did think that 一点儿 did mean "by the way". Now I remember that 对了 means "BTW". Oops.
- It's 280+. Too much to count. Maybe I'll make a scraper to do it for me..

Hey, I have a question
I see you added a warning area that tells all users they need to switch to ScratchWikiSkin temporarily if they're in the Vector one. I also want this, because my userpage in Vector is not so good looking as in ScratchWikiSkin. Could you please teach me how to do this? Thanks!
Nambaseking01 (talk | contribs) 19:58, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- You could copy it directly from my userpage content, giving credit in an HTML comment.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 10:54, 15 November 2019 (UTC)- Okay, thanks! Just so you know though, I normally don't put my credits in comments - I put them all in bulk in a "Credits" section.

Question about the block log
I was scrolling through Recent Changes and I noticed that you blocked a user and then edited the logs so that it didn't show their name, block reason, etc. I get why you censored that info for privacy, but what I don't understand is what's the purpose of having a block log if all it shows is (removed). If you didn't want the info to display publicly, wouldn't it make more sense to make the page only viewable by bureaucrats and actually display the log information or simply delete the log page?
54329 (talk | contribs) 06:57, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- What you're talking about is an impossibility. We have no way (besides modding MediaWiki core) of hiding block logs automatically, so we simply manually hide all block logs as soon as creating them.
- (We do already have a monkeypatch to hide the Special:BlockList, but hiding particular types of logs, especially when they show up in other feeds, is impossible.)
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 07:51, 20 November 2019 (UTC)Sorry to but in, Special:BlockList Doesnt exist, isnt it Blocks ??my god, im sorry, ignore this

- Why are blocks censored?
Dominic305 Talk Contribs (1,791) Scratch Directory 12:38, 20 November 2019 (UTC)- We do not publicize blocks, because they only attract negative attention to the blocked users, so we protect their privacy in all ways possible so that anyone who has no need to know only knows that someone was blocked, not who was blocked or who blocked them.

Image Compression
Your bot, TemplatesFTW, compressed my image for the Privacy Policy article, Privacy_Policy.PNG (not sure how to link to it without embedding the whole image), and reduced it by 5 KB. I don't know why it did that since I already compressed it before uploading, and it was smaller than any of the previous versions of the image, at 48 KB. Does it have to be below a certain maximum file size?
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 12:26, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
- My bot won't reupload if the difference in size after compressing is <10% of the previous size; 10% of 48 KB is 4.8 KB, and a 5 KB difference is large enough to make it count. In the future, if you have compressed it, include the word "compress" (or any grammatically correct form of the word lol) somewhere in the upload message - it'll skip those.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 13:08, 9 December 2019 (UTC)- Okay, thanks
Groko13 (talk | contribs) 13:27, 9 December 2019 (UTC)- Also, for linking to images, use [[:File:Privacy Policy.PNG]] (produces File:Privacy Policy.PNG.

Updating an image daily
Hello! I was wondering if I could upload an image to the wiki (a Google Sheets statistic) and update the image daily (or weekly). Would this be OK, or would you rather me not do it? (I currently have the images hosted on an external website.)
Dominic305 Talk Contribs (1,791) Scratch Directory 23:43, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
- Your current method is fine, thanks for asking (I took a look at your links and checked that they're OK) - weekly uploads of a user image is not the kind of thing we want to encourage, for fear of flooding storage, let alone daily.

I need help with the yeeting of the custom signature.
So, I made a custom signature, and I made sure it confomed to the rules. Now what? I have NO IDEA how to insert JavaScript files onto Wikis, by the way.
TheAwesome98 (talk | contribs) 16:44, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- S:GOODSIG is the guide to follow - it includes all the necessary instructions. JavaScript is irrelevant.
- By the way, to "yeet" something is to throw it with great force - "yeeting" a custom signature doesn't make any sense.

Scratchblock Extensions
On the page Blocks, I've added the extension blocks, but for half the extensions the blocks are not showing correctly. Can you fix this?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 01:40, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- I've fixed everything; the problem seems to be that you forgot to add
::extension
to the ones that are broken. For example<sb>motor [ v] turn this way for () seconds::extension</sb>
would turn intomotor [ v] turn this way for () seconds::extension
. For me, using http://scratchblocks.github.io/ helps for previewing scratchblocks. Hopefully I helped!
TenType (talk | contribs) 05:47, 30 December 2019 (UTC)- Most extensions can be fixed by adding their extension names to the end, like ::ev3 or ::wedo. This fixes the icon at the left of the block. However, the text to speech, lego boost, and go direct ones don't seem to work.

Large images
When editing the wiki, I found some 1920*1080 pictures. How did they get here, and why are they not crashing pages?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 01:13, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- They were either uploaded before the size limits came into place, or uploaded by an admin for some reason; they're not crashing pages because the crashing problem isn't that extreme (it only happened a few times), but our size limits are in place to be better safe than sorry.
