WM
Can I have my "full briefing" now?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 18:18, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- I was planning on waiting until the rest of the Wiki community is ok with you taking over WM for a while.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:21, 14 June 2014 (UTC)- Okay, but you said you would on the CP (wow we have a lot of abbreviations).
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 18:22, 14 June 2014 (UTC)- Don't worry, I will. Basically, the "briefing" just entails reading a bunch of manuals I wrote. To start, read the basic technical manual. I will write a more detailed manual outlining the other stuff later.

how's the admin transition?
... You seem like you are enjoying admin and also helping the wiki at the same time! Is admin powers interesting? ;)
KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 19:25, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed it is. The most useful power I have is protecting pages, but it's a very useful one.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:26, 14 June 2014 (UTC)- glad you love the protection! A small question, is there more protection other than sysop, and autoconfirmed? :) ps:should I complete the parserfunc. page quickly or not (in other words do you think that page is important and should finishit quickly or not?)second question, should it be named scratch wiki: parserfunc. Or stay the same as help:parserfunc.? Wow I can't use a phones keyboard properly sorry if I have lots of typos :)
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 02:14, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Oops, I mean if you want to change the namespace for Help:ParserFunctions to scratch wiki: and how fast you want me to finish the page by
KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 17:33, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- There's no hurry for you to finish, and I personally think it works better as a help page.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:42, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Question
Is this template now useful?

RE: WM stuff to read about
I think I am ready to run WM. Could you send me the source files in a zip (maybe on Dropbox) so I can start running it now, in case something goes wrong, you will be around until July. Reply on my page please.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 15:26, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- I already put it on Github. I will turn off WM for 3 hours after this message is submitted so you can test.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:28, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- How did you program the authentication? There is an error on Line 68. I tried making logininfo.php, and changed WikiMonitor to Krett12(I'm gonna run it on my main account). The PHP code for this bot is a lot different than what I've seen for other bots. Can you help me out?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 16:31, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- What did the error say?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:27, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- Btw, you're going to need to do a find-replace and replace every instance of WikiMonitor in the code with the username you are using.
- Actually, hold that thought. Only replace the ones where it looks like it needs to change. Don't change the configuration entries.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:30, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- You should set it as a variable, so you could do like "User:$username". Or maybe even a constant, but I don't think PHP lets you include constants like that.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:38, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

PHP does in fact let you do constants. Anyway, done, it should be on Github now.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:45, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- I was specifically talking about double quote inclusion. But not like concatenation is too difficult. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:51, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- My standard in programming is never to use double quotes in PHP unless using escape sequences. I want text to appear as I typed it, and all of the capabilities of double quotes get kind of confusing.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:59, 15 June 2014 (UTC)- I also found the error. I was using file_get_contents instead of curl_get. This means that if the request fails, it will try to parse anyway and crash.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:13, 15 June 2014 (UTC) - Not a bad idea. Do you ever do something like
'some text' . "\n"
, or will you relax and use"some text\n"
?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:18, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Alright, this is what I see : http://s14.postimg.org/5bt5xcwe9/Page_1_Picture_15.jpg
After I downloaded the new version, it's line 69 not 68, I'd look at it but I have to go.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 20:31, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm. The way PHP works, if it parses for one person, it should parse for everyone. Do you have an outdated version of PHP?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 21:49, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Oh, the problem is I'm trying to run it directly off my hard drive, I'll upload it to a server.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 03:04, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's ok if you run it directly off a hard drive, as long as the computer is on. In many cases, a server is really just a computer with specialized software.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:04, 16 June 2014 (UTC) - Well, I fixed it when I uploaded it to a server. Maybe the PHP worked better?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 13:50, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
PS. I am gonna turn off WikiMonitor for a minute. Can you accept my Tweaker account?
Hmm...It disables mine too since they both check the same page. Can you close its window?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 14:05, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- When it's disabled, I have to turn it on manually again. Go ahead and test it, let me know when you are done. I will also accept Tweaker.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:57, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! I will now hook it up to the bot.
Tweaker (talk | contribs) 15:52, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great! I'll turn WM back on and let you know when I'm leaving.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:39, 16 June 2014 (UTC)- Also, once I notify you that I am leaving for vacation (which should be the beginning of July), you should change User:WikiMonitor/Configuration/MessageSuffix to reflect that you are temporarily in charge. I also would recommend putting something on User:Tweaker (even if it's just a redirect to WM's userpage).

I know, but that's not funny.

WikiMonitor
I think the way you did it looks better than mine, since I'm only gonna run it temporarily, and it's not July yet.

WM
There is some bug related to clearing the Sandbox, I might remove that.

Actually, I didn't sign the post to see if the bot would notice.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 01:25, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, it's not doing anything, it's just been "Starting cycles"
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 01:27, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

- The way WM checks for signatures is kind of weird. Basically, it thinks it was fixed if the user who didn't sign makes any edits after that. Anyway, feel free to make more test posts either here or on other talk pages (be sure to remove them when you're done), but I need to go to bed now, so I'll see how it went tomorrow.

scmb1
I was looking at scmb1's profile for a comment, when I saw that you wanted to protect the bot archives page. If that is so, would that mean I cannot archive them anymore? :+)
KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 04:34, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well, when originally asked if I wanted to protect it, I said EWs would need to be allowed to edit it (I was one at the time), so I was using that as an example. Now, I probably wouldn't do that.

Formatting
Can you help me with the formatting of thumbnails in the "Create a Wiki Page" section of this page? You can respond here.
Angelblade (talk | contribs) 15:23, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- What's wrong with them?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:37, 17 June 2014 (UTC)- Well, the way it looks is kinda crazy. I want to make it so that under the search box thumbnail, the sentence about clicking the create button starts. Trully, I need help with thumbnails in general.
Angelblade (talk | contribs) 21:54, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Bots
How do you write a bot code? You can respond here.
Angelblade (talk | contribs) 15:26, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Learn the MediaWiki API and write a script to use it. The most popular languages are Python and PHP, but you can also use a host of others.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:38, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Tweaker
Is Tweaker a bot? They are on the Wiki, even though their account on Scratch is 2 days old. And, I've seen it send some messages that look like a message from WikiMonitor. Thanks!
Derpmeup (talk | contribs) 15:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes. I am going to be gone for a while this summer, which means I won't be able to operate WM. During that time, Tweaker will be taking its place.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:38, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
More WM problems
Every so often, the browser will stop checking and loading the PHP , and just show it the way it is, causing the bot to go off. Any ideas?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 16:04, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Are you allowed to install software on your server? If so, what platform is it?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:32, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
I believe I am running PHP 5.3.2. And I do have permission to update PHP, but I have been unsuccessful. But the problem may be the browser, not the server. It used to work fine. :/
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 20:33, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
My always-on runs Firefox 2.x (It's a very old machine). Not 22.x, 2.x. Plus, I don't know what a cron job is (I must seem very dumb to you
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 02:32, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Having Firefox 20 versions old is probably not able to interpret the modern-day PHP used in all of the WikiMonitor code. Out of curiosity how old is that computer? Is it like Windows Millenium or something? You could at least probably download Firefox 5 or 6 or something higher.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 02:51, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Mac Sunflower (10.3.9)
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 02:54, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Are you sure it's not gonna work with PHP? This is what I see : http://postimg.org/image/cmofntt61/
Krett12 (talk | contribs)
- No, it won't work that way. When PHP scripts run in a browser, they have a time limit (usually 60 seconds or so). You need to run it locally in order for it to work. Please try updating PHP on your computer so you can run it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:37, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Also, don't turn on WM until tomorrow please, I have some things I have to do and won't receive your messages until about 7:00 PM eastern time (4:00 PM my time)
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 18:35, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- I suppose that would work. However, if possible, you should try removing the infinite loops and make it a sequence.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:37, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm going with something in Safari.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 19:45, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, now that I think about it, running it in a web browser would be very problematic. It would cause a lot of undue stress on the server (it will make unnecessary HTTP requests), and many features would probably not work properly. Another potential danger is that the it will attempt to log in too many times (if you log in via the API too much, it temporarily blocks you) and then it will entirely stop working. If you can't get it working locally in terminal, please don't run it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:53, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Okay, tomorrow I'll update my local copy of PHP and try to get it to work locally. Also, why would it block you for logging in via API too often?
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 04:06, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- It blocks you from logging in too many times. You generally can use the API almost unlimitedly (for the scope of WM, you can do all of the necessary queries), but the login API is limited to prevent brute-force attacks. If you log in too quickly, it blocks you from logging in again for 5-10 minutes.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:18, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Right. I updated PHP (I used to have 4.4.7 running!!) and everything's good.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 16:17, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, there's the problem. To support most modern PHP scripts, you need at least version 5.0. Can you give me a screenshot of the terminal, just so I can make sure it's running properly?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 17:12, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Yup! I'm writing from my always-on right now (I usually write from a different computer)
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 02:42, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great! Can you now stop the script (go to the terminal window and press Control-C [yes, you still use control on a Mac for this]) so I can turn WM back on for the remaining time I will be home?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 11:15, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Alright! I turned it off. Just beware I have changed several things such as the suffix of the messages. Can you unprotect all protected WikiMonitor pages? I'm not a sysop, so I won't be able to edit them.
Krett12 (talk | contribs) 14:42, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- The only one I ever protected was the main user page, which has since been unprotected.

If we could just follow each other and then we would know what songs we make! And I just realized, are all active wikians musicians too?
KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 00:06, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:28, 18 June 2014 (UTC)- No, I am no musician. I never got too interested in making music, but if you like music composers Ernie, you should take a listen to this great composition, my very favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szzZQwawELc

Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:10, 18 June 2014 (UTC)- I wouldn't exactly say I hate it. It depends how long the poem is and if it rhymes. - ErnieParke already deleted it. In the future, please only ask one person.

help redir
At Help:Redirects it doesn't say what is a good redirect and what is not a good redirect to make. I think this is why there are so many not useful redirects. Even I am confused whether a redirect is good or bad ;) shall we make some rules on creating redirects or bring this up in the cp (or is it only me that doesn't know? :)
