DC Subway
Hi, I just found out that you love subway systems! We went to DC in October, and I never wanted to get off of the subway! Cool fact we have in common!
Jandrewg (talk | contribs) 14:01, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, the Washington Metro is probably my favorite. It's definitely the cleanest and nicest-looking. It's actually the first subway I ever rode, since I have family in DC.

College?
Did you end up getting into MIT, or is it a different college?
The_Grits (talk | contribs) 11:56, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- I got in somewhere else (Case Western Reserve University), but it's still a good college.

Whoa, glitch?
Hiya jvvg, I think there's a glitch going on here: http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/File:2.0_Statistics.png I uploaded the new image, and it said that I uploaded the same old image. So I re-uploaded it, and it worked, but the image that it was using was the old one. So I reverted the image to the correct one, but it only made a duplicate image and stayed on the wrong outdated one. I tried again with the same result. Did I do something wrong? St19_Galla Talk • Contribs
- After you upload an image, you have to refresh the page manually to clear your cache so that it shows the new image.

Moving the Scratch Spanish Wiki Talk Here
The problem with that is I left Scratch and all I do now is edit the Wiki. It requires me to register and put the code on a Scratch Project, but I am no longer on Scratch. Is there any other way we can do this? I've been on the Scratch Wiki for a while now...Would it be possible if you could just make me an account called AghaCool? My email is [removed] if you want to discuss this through emails.
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- hey, sorry to barge in but refrain from giving out personal information (even emails) through the wiki. thanks!
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 02:24, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- Not having an account on Scratch makes this a lot more difficult, as part of the point of having a Wiki account is that it has an associated Scratch account. I'm not exactly sure how to proceed, as this is a fairly unique case.

I will create an account for you.

- Awesome, thanks! When/how will I know the username and password?
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 31 December 2015 (UTC)- You should get it in an email.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:13, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- How do I start the Spanish Wiki? I'm logged on to the Test-Scratch Wiki!I think I got it so I created a page called Es:ScratchEquipo for Scratch Team by searching it on the address bar...is that how it works?
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 16:40, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- Yeah, you create pages like that.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:46, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- But, it took me to the main Wiki, should I create pages on the Test Wiki? How do I create a page on the test wiki?
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 16:51, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- I think I figured it out. Here is a link, can you look at it? http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Es:ScratchEquipo
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 17:11, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, you create pages like that.
- You should get it in an email.
I have some questions:
1. If the Spanish Scratch Wiki gets approved and launches will I get to be an admin?
2. How many contributers do I have to have along with me? I'm not sure how many I can get because I don't know many Scratchers that can help with the Spanish Wiki. I can do the Scratch Spanish Wiki by myself if nobody else can help, it's not a big deal!
3. How many articles do I have to have before the Spanish Scratch Wiki can officially launch?
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 19:10, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- It looks like you did it right, though there are some issues with the language that I'll fix when I get the chance. In response to your questions, 1. Maybe. Let's cross that bridge when we get to it. 2. Just to have it on the test Wiki, none, but to get its own Wiki, a fair amount. 3. Once again, a fair amount.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:11, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- Awesome thanks! And yeah, with the language I'm not exactly the best at it because I'm only in middle school.
- Also, here is a link to the home page of the Scratch Spanish Wiki :::http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Es:Scratch_Wiki_Espa%C3%B1ol Do you :::like it so far?
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 19:19, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- I think es:Pagina Principal (add the accent, on the first A in "pagina", as I can't figure out accents in firefox and will have to edit in Word) would be a better title.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 03:13, 1 January 2016 (UTC)- Here is a link on a page on how to request a Spanish Wiki Account: http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Es:C%C3%B3mo_contribuir

Your Bot
Hi, your bot told me to add a category to categories. I think it is a bug.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 22:18, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, it's not a bug. You still have to add categories to categories so that we can have a hierarchy.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:54, 4 January 2016 (UTC)- OK. What does your bot do?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:23, 4 January 2016 (UTC)- See User:WikiMonitor for details, but it tells users if they don't sign their posts, make too many edits in a short amount of time, and don't categorize new pages/files.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:04, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

The Category
I was just wondering what was unuseful about my category.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 03:41, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- The "Categories" category duplicates the various other meta-categories we have (our root category is Category:Scratch Wiki, and we have other meta-categories inside that all other categories should go under). The other ones looked like they would fit better under other categories. In general, we try to avoid making too many categories (I'm not saying we should never make them, but we should be absolutely sure that no other category fits), so I was moving the stuff you made to pre-existing categories in order to maintain the structure.

Hey there! Look at the bottom post on my user talk.
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 19:41, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, I see it. However, even userpage edits to clog up the recent changes, so I'm not disabling WM for those (userpage edits are what trigger it the most frequently, actually). Also, it won't send you another notification unless you continue your bulk editing, and we don't actually punish users at all for WM messages, so you don't need to worry about it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC) - OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOk.

Suggestions for better connection of Scratch-Wiki and -Website
see: Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Connect Wiki and Website. Is that OK for you? Could you add your suggestion? Your idea, you suggested yesterday in the de:SC, of having "article of the week" as a regulary item in the scratch-news is brilliant, hope we'll convince the ST. After accepting or changing the format of that article please post it in the S:PORTAL so the community can take part.
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 23:08, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- MartinWollenweber, normally we don't create subpages for new discussions - please just add it to the CP and refrain from making separate subpages. Thanks!
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 01:09, 5 January 2016 (UTC)
- I know, but in this case it's a special thing because the scratch team asked to make suggestions what will lead to a permanent process that we should'nt mix up with all the fast changing matters if the community portal: If we want to activate the Scratch team about that wiki-webpage connection matter permanently, we should have an own page for that and I thougt a sub-page of the cp is a good place for that. I also made some additions to my post to jvvg above, please have a look. Perhaps it's a good idea to do the brainstorming in the cp and have only the result article with the ordered suggestions separated, perhaps at an other place? What do you think?
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 06:52, 5 January 2016 (UTC)- @jvvg: I saw that you add your suggestion. Thanks! I also improved the title and text a bit, now it's Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Connect Wiki and Website (with shortcut S:CWW. Do you want to post the opportunity to make that suggestions to the Scratch Team at S:CP or do you want me to post it? Perhaps we should ask Linda because she is member of the Scratch Team now and hopefully will get bureaucrat and editlockedpages rights soon?
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 18:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)- Maybe moving it to the CP but not archiving it and putting it first would be better?

Hey jvvg!
Hello, jvvg! I see you're waiting on a lot of colleges, but are there any colleges that have replied to you yet? Also, I hope you get into MIT so you could possibly become a Scratch Team Member. Good luck!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 18:03, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
- I have heard back from three colleges so far. I was deferred from MIT (we'll see in March whether or not I got in) and got in to Case Western Reserve University (which is also a very good engineering school).

Scratchpaper Interview
About what percentage of the requests do you think get accepted?
-unsigned comment by Mitopolis (talk | contribs)
- A fairly low percentage. Probably 20-40%.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:14, 21 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. Do you think the Wiki needs more editors?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 19:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)- I think that the quality is more important than quantity, and I prefer the situation we have rather than having more editors that aren't as familiar with Wiki standards and aren't as willing to work with others. The short answer to that is no, I don't think we need more editors. We do accept enough requests to maintain a steady volume of editors.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:15, 24 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. What do you think more Experienced Wikians will do?

- OK. How do you think the suggestions at S:CWW will help the site?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 20:28, 25 January 2016 (UTC)- I think they will make more people aware that the Wiki exists and is a valuable source for information about Scratch.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:42, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. Do you think vandalism is a big problem right now?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 01:39, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- We occasionally have incidents, but overall it isn't a big problem. Since we have a closed account system and users have to meet fairly high standards to join, intentional vandalism is fairly rare (though it does happen occasionally).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:05, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- That's good that vandalism isn't a big issue. What do you think is the biggest issue right now?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 02:28, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- I'm not sure. Everything seems to be working more or less fine right now, and most of the issues that pop up are fairly minor. It's basically just persistent stuff, like working through account requests. Also, we have an election for a new EW coming up starting next week, and that may cause some drama, though hopefully it will go smoothly.

Good. The BeetleBlocks article has caused some discussion recently. What do you think about that article?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 02:36, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- I definitely think we should keep it, since it's a program fairly closely based on the Scratch structure, and it's sort of a version of 3D scratch, which is a common topic of discussion.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:37, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. I think we've all agreed about that. Have you tried the program? Also,I use it in Firefox and it works fine.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 02:41, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- I've played around with it a bit (also in Firefox), and it seems pretty cool.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:38, 26 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. I've noticed that lots of articles about OS-dependent stuff don't seem to cover Windows 10. For example, Hard Refresh doesn't cover Edge, the new Windows default browser. Do you think that matters?

No, I mean I don't think that too much has changed in terms of compatibility between Windows 8 and 10, not that we need to make sure it works.

WikiMonitor
I think WikiMonitor is off. The User:WikiMonitor/Disable page is true, so I think there is a bug.
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 20:01, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, WikiMonitor is definitely off. (Do you like my new sig?)
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Scratch account) 21:19, 27 January 2016 (UTC)- If you read the page the first two sentences say this: "This page can be used to disable WikiMonitor, a bot used to check recent changes. To do so, please change the text below to "false"." That means that setting the page to false, turns the bot off, and it's on true at the moment.
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 22:01, 27 January 2016 (UTC)- It appears to have crashed upon trying to parse some XML. I restarted it, hopefully this won't happen again. Also, the fact that the disable page isn't set to false doesn't mean that it has to be running (though hopefully it is). If it is disabled, I actually have to restart it manually, and if I ever restart my test server (where I host WM), I also have to run it manually.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:42, 28 January 2016 (UTC)- Hope I didn't cause any of that, I edited it only to revert the change to 'false' due to the fact that there was no reason to shut down the bot. :)
- St19_Galla Talk • Contribs
- No, you didn't cause that. It was most likely a network issue that caused WM to receive an incomplete page. When it is disabled, it exits gracefully (it says something like "This bot was disabled by jvvg"), but in this case it threw an XML parsing error.

Also, I might set up an intranet on our network and run a wiki (or wikis) on it. If I do that, would WikiMonitor work and would you care if I used it?
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Scratch account) 03:13, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Scratch account) 16:38, 28 January 2016 (UTC)- Its off again. I tested it by posting 7 times on a subpage of my talk without signing.
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Scratch account) 16:55, 28 January 2016 (UTC)- It appears to be working fine... A talk page edit has to be big enough and be editing a specific section in order to trigger the notification so that it avoids edits of previous messages and other false positives.

OK. Do you happen to know how to set up a Linux intranet? (Also, what distribution do you use, and do you know shell programming?)
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 01:56, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- I don't even know what intranet means, but I use Ubuntu 64-bit and am familiar with shell programming.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:07, 29 January 2016 (UTC)- An intranet is basically a personal internet. And with shell programming, do you ever distribute your scripts? Also, do you know how to license scripts under the GPL?
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 02:17, 29 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok, cool. I don't usually distribute my shell scripts (they're pretty basic). To license a script under the GPL, all you need to do is explain that you license it under the GPL. There's no more to it that I know of.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:52, 29 January 2016 (UTC)- OK. Do I just say "Public Domain" for the copyright notice? Also, I have a not-standard GZip Tar system called MMMPM. All you need to do is tar your program with any documentation and a build script to set it up (If you make an executable, add the source and a gcc in that script) and change the name to (name)_(version).mp and use the GUI (note that sudo and su won't work; you'll need use gksudo and gksu) to install it.
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 02:58, 29 January 2016 (UTC)- No, public domain means people can distribute it however they want. For the copyright notice, say it's distributed under the GNU GPL. The reason that I don't distribute my shell scripts isn't about packaging them - it's just that they usually aren't useful to anybody besides me.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 12:38, 29 January 2016 (UTC)- Ok. So I don't need a copyright notice at all? (unless I'm copyrighting it, when I probably wouldn't license it under the GPL)

- Ok. So I don't need a copyright notice at all? (unless I'm copyrighting it, when I probably wouldn't license it under the GPL)
- No, public domain means people can distribute it however they want. For the copyright notice, say it's distributed under the GNU GPL. The reason that I don't distribute my shell scripts isn't about packaging them - it's just that they usually aren't useful to anybody besides me.
- OK.
- Ok, cool. I don't usually distribute my shell scripts (they're pretty basic). To license a script under the GPL, all you need to do is explain that you license it under the GPL. There's no more to it that I know of.
- An intranet is basically a personal internet. And with shell programming, do you ever distribute your scripts? Also, do you know how to license scripts under the GPL?
No, you just need to say it's distributed under the GNU GPL.

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 20:24, 28 January 2016 (UTC) - Unfortunately, we don't maintain PowerBrowse anymore, since making a suitable alternative to any commercial web browsers would be extremely difficult and require a lot more resources than I have.

Commenting on rejects' profile pages?
Do you still comment on rejected users' profile pages to tell them that their account request has been rejected? I looked through a few of the most recent bad ones you rejected, and I can't find your comment on their profiles. Or did they just delete the comments?

Questions About EW Election
Hey jvvg! How long will nominations be open? and When will we be notified if we make it or not? Thanks!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 00:17, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
- Nominations will be open for several days (basically we'll close them when we think everybody has had the chance to nominate themselves who wants to, but at least until Friday). While nominations are open and for a little while after they close, we will be discussing who we think should run, and we'll try to get that out as quickly as possible (probably within 3 days of nominations closing, but I can't make any guarantees).

How do I get to the setup? (Sorry, I want to debug the skin but have absolutely no experience setting up stuff like this.)
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 02:36, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
- You need to download the code from MediaWiki, set up a database, and configure it following their instructions. You also need a PHP server set up, and if you are on Windows, the easiest setup is XAMPP, while on Mac OS, it's MAMP.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:42, 12 February 2016 (UTC)- How do I do that?

Script
I made some code for WikiMonitor:
#!/bin/sh

php wikimonitor
done
Would that work?
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 00:33, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

#!/bin/sh
echo '#!/bin/sh' > ~/.wmd
echo '#WikiMonitor Start Daemon' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'until [ $? = 0 ]; do' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'php wikimonitor' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'done' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'bash ~/.wmd &' >> ~/.bashrc
echo Installed WikiMonitor Start Daemon. Log out and log back in to start it.
This will install a little daemon. It will need you to have
bash
running the whole time you want to run WM. (You won't need superuser privileges.)

Hey jvvg, I saw yer message in the Bot Requests about the HelpBot and finally I understand why you don't think it'd be a good idea. I have a couple comments and questions. 1. I will start working on a new welcome message. 2. Would it be fine (and not considered spam) if every month or so I leave a comment on people's talk pages telling them how the Wiki has changed, if anything has been added, and what's trending on the Wiki. Would I be allowed to do that and would you be fine with it? Thank you!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 14:58, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 15:09, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- CGI is just a way to run PHP (or another server-side language) and then send the results to the user. For what you're trying to do, CGI scripts aren't what you want.

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 15:16, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- You can't run shell scripts through a webserver. If you want to lock your screen, you shouldn't be using webpages at all.

- I would like to process HTML forms with it. (I tried a shell script, but it displays the script rather than running it.)
- CGI is just a way to run PHP (or another server-side language) and then send the results to the user. For what you're trying to do, CGI scripts aren't what you want.
- OK. Can you make CGI scripts with it?
Well, you can pass form data to a shell script using the "system()" command.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:16, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- I still can't figure out how to make a CGI script.
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 16:40, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- You really shouldn't be trying to run shell scripts from a web browser because it doesn't just let you have shell access to the computer. The only way to have shell access on another computer is with SSH (or with some other pretty janky stuff).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:54, 11 March 2016 (UTC)- I'm not talking about shells anymore. I'm talking about "script.php" in <form method="post" action="script.php><input type="text"></form>.
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 16:25, 11 March 2016 (UTC)- So in this case are you just trying to process a form with PHP?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 13:47, 12 March 2016 (UTC)- Yes. Like making a save-load system for a text editor.
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 16:16, 12 March 2016 (UTC)- In that case, you just need to make the script receiving the form data to place it in the appropriate file, and then populate the textbox with the desired file when loading the page.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:28, 12 March 2016 (UTC)- How do I do that?

Well, in your form, you do this:
<form action="page.php">...</form>
In page.php (or whatever processes the script, you do something like this:
<?php
file_put_contents('file.php', $_POST['field']);
?>
Replace 'field' with whatever you use for the name attribute on the textarea. Also note that this is not exactly the best script and is definitely not secure, but is a good basic start.

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 01:04, 13 March 2016 (UTC) - The UI code looks fine, though you may want to auto-populate the input fields using PHP. However, the issue is more likely with the PHP script that processes the form.

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 01:33, 13 March 2016 (UTC)- Using the Wiki to teach you PHP would be an extremely painful and slow process, so I would advise you use some tutorials. Try the W3 Schools tutorial to get a start in PHP.

Hi there
I can't sign into ModShare and when I click on forgot password, when I comment the verification code, it says I didn't.
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 17:35, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
- Also, can I make a test page that's under my userpage?
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 18:37, 13 March 2016 (UTC)- 1. This is a result of the fact that the forgot password takes advantage of an old page layout. I will fix this, but this may not be until next week when we push a bunch of server improvements. 2. Sure, go ahead.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:18, 13 March 2016 (UTC)- Speaking of servers, do you have a spare server OS?
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 16:34, 16 March 2016 (UTC)- What do you mean by "spare server OS?" Mod Share is run on Ubuntu.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 10:40, 17 March 2016 (UTC)- I meant a product key, but since you run ubuntu, nvm.
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 16:17, 17 March 2016 (UTC)- Also, on wikipedia, if there's a bot and you go to its talk page, it redirects to the owner's talk page. Why don't you add that?

Rules on Wikipedia don't necessarily apply here. In this case, it's just because there are some existing messages there, and I want to make it clear that WM is not me, even though it is controlled by me.

Why did I get a message from WikiMonitor?
I got a message saying I didn't categorize What is advertising? when creating it. I'm not sure why, though, because I had only edited it (twice) and didn't create it. :P
Pianogirl84 (talk | contribs) 22:28, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
- The reason you got that message is because you accidentally created the page, when you only meant to edit it. I'm guessing what happened was you clicked the edit button and started making changes to the page. However, while you were editing the page PrincessPandaLover moved What is Advertising? to What is advertising? without leaving a redirect. So this deleted the page What is Advertising? while you were still editing it. When you clicked the "save" button, instead of editing the page, it created it, because the page no longer existed. And since there weren't any categories at the time, you got the message.
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 22:55, 18 March 2016 (UTC)- Oooooh, that's why. Thanks.

Hey there!
Hi, jvvg. :) First of sorry you didn't get into MIT. I really wish you did. Secondly, it seems like nobody is on the Spanish scratch wiki. Well, it seems like nobody is even on the test wiki! What should I do? We will never launch the Spanish wiki like this!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 15:46, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Well, if nobody contributes, do we really want to launch the Wiki? The key is to find more contributors and make sure they really do want to contribute.

- Not having an account on Scratch makes this a lot more difficult, as part of the point of having a Wiki account is that it has an associated Scratch account. I'm not exactly sure how to proceed, as this is a fairly unique case.

Also, it won't send you another notification unless you continue your bulk editing, and we don't actually punish users at all for WM messages, so you don't need to worry about it.

see: Scratch Wiki talk:Community Portal/Connect Wiki and Website.

Hey jvvg!
Hello, jvvg! I see you're waiting on a lot of colleges, but are there any colleges that have replied to you yet? Also, I hope you get into MIT so you could possibly become a Scratch Team Member. Good luck!

Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 19:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)- I think that the quality is more important than quantity, and I prefer the situation we have rather than having more editors that aren't as familiar with Wiki standards and aren't as willing to work with others.

#!/bin/sh
until [ $? = 0 ]; do
php wikimonitor
done
Would that work?
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 00:33, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
- I just run it manually whenever the server turns on. I eventually plan to make it a cron job, but I just haven't gotten around to it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:34, 18 February 2016 (UTC)- OK. I made a config script:
#!/bin/sh
echo '#!/bin/sh' > ~/.wmd
echo '#WikiMonitor Start Daemon' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'until [ $? = 0 ]; do' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'php wikimonitor' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'done' >> ~/.wmd
echo 'bash ~/.wmd &' >> ~/.bashrc
echo Installed WikiMonitor Start Daemon. Log out and log back in to start it.
This will install a little daemon. It will need you to have
bash
running the whole time you want to run WM. (You won't need superuser privileges.)

- I don't see what people have against the extension. It looks good to me. I don't see the point in having a bot when we can use an extension to do the exact same thing.
- I think I am getting way too much hate for suggesting the extension. I was trying to find the one Wikipedia uses to allow people to "ping" each other, and that looked like what I needed.
- Or a very bad extension.
Please keep this discussion on the original thread.

Account Requests
Hi jvvg! I just saw that st19_galla and I got promoted. I noticed that there are some account requests open on the page. Do you remind if I try to review some? I read the admin guide to reviewing requests, and I think I understand what to do. Or is there something I need to know before trying to review them?

Custom Sig
Hey Jvvg,
I was trying to create my custom sig, but I don't know how to fill out the contributions part. Do you know what the proper formatting is? Right now, it just looks like:" _Tigerjack_(Talk | contribs ) 02:09, 22 February 2016 (UTC)"
I know that that is because I got the link wrong - but I don't know where to find the right one! If you don't mind, can you respond on my talk page?
Thanks!
PS: How did you make the 'Hey, it's jvvg talking through your mouse" thing? It's really cool.
_Tigerjack_(Talk | contribs ) 02:09, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- You go to Special:Contributions/-Tigerjack- to link to your contribs, and you use magic to talk through the mouse.

HelpBot
Hey jvvg, I saw yer message in the Bot Requests about the HelpBot and finally I understand why you don't think it'd be a good idea. I have a couple comments and questions. 1. I will start working on a new welcome message. 2. Would it be fine (and not considered spam) if every month or so I leave a comment on people's talk pages telling them how the Wiki has changed, if anything has been added, and what's trending on the Wiki. Would I be allowed to do that and would you be fine with it? Thank you!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 14:58, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- 1. Sure. If you have any suggestions for how to improve the welcome message, please tell us. 2. I think commenting that on everybody's talk page would be excessive. It would be a better idea to use the CP or something.

Hi! I'm "desonicing" the AF Wiki, but I need some help. Would you mind helping? I have a goal to remove every mention of Sonic by April Fool's Day.

Spanish Scratch Wiki
Hello jvvg, This may seem like an odd request, but could you create four user accounts on the test wiki? Some of my friends plan to possibly edit a little and help the Spanish Wiki. Then could you possibly email the names and passwords of those accounts to me? I understand if this is not possible. The usernames can be anything. Thank you!
AghaCool (talk | contribs) 19:59, 5 March 2016 (UTC)
- They can request an account through the account request system. Just instruct them to go to Special:ConfirmAccounts on the Test Wiki.

Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 03:18, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- There isn't really a good way to implement this in PHP. It is possible to request passwords, but it's a big pain, and you should probably stick with a shell script.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:06, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- OK. Can you make CGI scripts with it?
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 15:09, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- CGI is just a way to run PHP (or another server-side language) and then send the results to the user. For what you're trying to do, CGI scripts aren't what you want.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:13, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- I would like to process HTML forms with it. (I tried a shell script, but it displays the script rather than running it.)
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 15:16, 10 March 2016 (UTC)- You can't run shell scripts through a webserver. If you want to lock your screen, you shouldn't be using webpages at all.

<?php
file_put_contents('file.php', $_POST['field']);
?>
Replace 'field' with whatever you use for the name attribute on the textarea. Also note that this is not exactly the best script and is definitely not secure, but is a good basic start.

<html>
<head>
<title>KittenEdit</title>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#AFFFFA">
<center><h1>KittenEdit</h1><form method="post" action="edit.php">
<input type="radio" name="saveload" value="load">Load<input type="radio" name="saveload" value="save">Save<br>Location: <input type="text" name="floc" size="100"><br><textarea name="filecontents" rows="100" cols="100"></textarea><br><input type="submit" value="Done"><input type="reset" value="Clear"></form></center></body></html> (Put that in a file to see the UI I built for it.)
Mitopolis (Talk | Contributions | Edits | Scratch account) 01:04, 13 March 2016 (UTC) - The UI code looks fine, though you may want to auto-populate the input fields using PHP. However, the issue is more likely with the PHP script that processes the form.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:24, 13 March 2016 (UTC)- There isn't a problem, I just don't know PHP.

2. Sure, go ahead.

jvvg (talk | contribs) 10:40, 17 March 2016 (UTC)- I meant a product key, but since you run ubuntu, nvm.
Banana439monkey (talk | contribs) 16:17, 17 March 2016 (UTC)- Also, on wikipedia, if there's a bot and you go to its talk page, it redirects to the owner's talk page. Why don't you add that?

Thanks.
