Multiple issues

Hi, I've just been patrolling your recent talk page edits. I have a few things to point out.

First off, you received the "Please compress files you upload" message for two reasons:

1. When my bot automatically compressed the image, the difference in size between the bot-compressed and you-compressed images was over 1 KiB.
2. In the upload comment, you didn't say anything about the file being compressed.

Or to put it another way, you can avoid receiving such messages by either:

• Compressing the file until further compressions bring the size difference to less than 1 KiB, or
• Compressing the file once (which is usually enough), and then including the word "compressed" in the upload comment.

If you don't do either, then for all anyone can tell you didn't compress the image and the bot message is not mistaken. I know that you're very vigilant about compressing, so just remember to include the word "compressed" in the comment when you upload after compressing, 'kay? :)

Second, try not to link to Wiki pages with external link syntax. The syntax for linking to a Wiki page is [[Page Title|Link text]]. To link to your archives, use [[User talk:Dominic305/archives|Click Here]], which produces: Click Here. External links (done with [linkaddress.tld link text]) are meant for external websites. Can you change the link on your talk page? Thanks

Please don't change the font of your message

Hi, I just saw your talk page messages on a couple of files. I'm here to let you know that while you may like the "Futura" font, others might not and it's also a violation of the "unnecessary styling" guideline to use it on non-user(-talk) pages, which includes talk pages of files. Could you refrain from changing fonts anywhere but your own talk page?

I also want to warn you that when you changed the font for your message on File talk:Flag-stop-scratch-3.PNG, the way you reset the font was not by closing your <div>, as is how tags work, but instead by abusing MediaWiki's auto tag-closing functionality and opening another div. This will break things! The only acceptable use case for deliberately leaving a tag unclosed is a single div at the top of the page containing all the styling you want to apply to the whole page, like the one on my userpages that adds the hover text and makes everything Courier New, or the ones on other people's talk pages that add a border or background to the page. Anywhere else, and things will start breaking. Could you please keep that in mind?

So I would type </div> to close the tag?

No, what I mean is that it's not okay to even open it on any talk page other than your own; on your own talk page, assuming you want it set everywhere, just open the div and don't close it. (In general, though, yes, </div> closes a previously opened <div ...> tag.)

More about compressing images

Hi, I just saw your reupload of File:Layering.png. I want to let you know that reducing bit-depth/color quality (or any type of lossy compression) is really only OK with GIFs, not with PNGs. Though I'm color blind and can't tell whether the Layering file has been affected by the lossy compression, others can and will notice.

Would you mind sticking to only lossless compression? i.e. the kind done by TinyPNG and its kin? Thanks.

While the colors have been greatly reduced, the difference is barely noticable (you would need to zoom in much farther than anybody would normally need to), and when it is easily noticable I avoid color reduction. (Example: I could have done 12 colors but it would be noticable that things are slightly off.)

Nevertheless, lossy compression is still too destructive for now - we don't need to squeeze every drop of size out of all images, just get it down to the level where a browser can receive it in an instant. One TinyPNG-level (and type i.e. lossless) compression is enough - save yourself the trouble.

I would add to the conversation, On File:Tips window.png you reverted what you just uploaded because it was "not playing nice"? What do you mean by that? Was it still showing the old image?

Yeah, I was in a hurry. I meant that it was stretching on the page How do I get help about a block? and since I wasn't sure if it was my cache or not, I reverted it to be safe. Later, I'll use my computer since I can clear the cache, as I'm on my iPad right now (and earlier). Sorry for any confusion.

Moving

dude, there's an actual "move" thing that lets you preserve the history... it's called "rename" in the pencil menu and it works cross-namespace and cross-subpage-level. FYI.

But it doesn't compress when there's nothing to compress, and I made sure it was all the way compressed..........

Ken's bot doesn't compress based on two factors.

• The word compress is in the upload summary
• The compressions is less than 1 kb.

So, yeah

Actually, for the most recent run I changed it to skip compression when the size difference is less than 10% of the original size (i.e. 1000B -> 950B doesn't get compressed but 1000B -> 890B does). I don't know if you got caught in that crossfire, but the fact remains that my bot managed to compress it more.
