New Wikian Tips

  • Check out the help pages if you haven't yet. They explain a lot of stuff on the wiki.
  • Use the sandbox to test out formatting and other stuff. The public sandbox gets cleared automatically every few hours by a bot. If you'd like your own sandbox that won't get cleared automatically, you can create one by going here.
  • You reply to others by clicking the pencil icon in the top-right of the page, then clicking "edit." After that find the person you'd like to reply to, add the right number of :'s - the first person doesn't add any, the second person adds one, third adds two, fourth adds three, and so on. Then you type what you'd like to say and sign it with ~~~~. You click save page and there you go! Here is an example conversation for you that is fake:
Hi everyone! There's a mistake in the "Scratch" section.
Example User 1 (talk | contribs)
Oh...Yeah. One of the images needs to be changed.
Example User 2 (talk | contribs)
 I'll do it now!

  • If you have any big questions about the wiki or suggestions (or something else relating to the wiki that you want a lot of people to see), you can post in the Community Portal. This is the official main talk page for our wiki. You can also reply to posts there. :)
  • If you're looking for pages to edit, I recommend random page. You can find it on the navigation bar (to the left) of the wiki. You can also look in the category "Pages to Improve"; it has multiple sub-categories with pages that need to be changed.
  • The box below where it says "summary" when you make an edit is for your edit summary. Put a short description of your edit here.
  • Please check "This is a minor edit" if your edit is minor when making an edit — this means things like just changing capitalization, removing a space, or another small edit like that. :)
  • If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! There's a list of Experienced Wikians (people that have been elected by the community to help lead it) here. There's a list of active users here. Of course, you can also ask me on my talk page or ask on the Community Portal.

Thanks to jvvg and Kenny2scratch for helping me touch it up. I originally wrote the indenting instructions for Ski-, but I've changed them a lot for these tips.

Contents on Userpage

So recently, a "contents" box started placing itself at the top of my userpage, even though there is no code that would put a "contents" box above my title... does anyone know why this is so, and/or how I can edit it, move it, or put something above it? Thanks for your help!

The TOC (Table of Contents, as it's known) is generated automatically when you have 3 or more sections in a page. You can control where it's displayed using the __TOC__ magic word, and you can turn it off using __NOTOC__. (You can't edit it, though - it's auto-generated from the titles of the sections.)

Please compress files you upload

Hello, I'm TemplatesFTW, a bot that does various maintenance tasks in the background. This is just a friendly reminder that when uploading File:84375 pfp.png, the image size was kinda big, and it could have been smaller if you had compressed it with TinyPNG. About your edit count

You can automatically track how many edits you have using {{Special:Editcount/84375}} - you currently have 141 edits. Easier than manually updating the number (which also causes an edit).

Bruh- oh wait, I see. The template has the signature built into it, but it's not in the WikiText, meaning the bot can't see it. I'll change that, then...

WikiMonitor is not magic and doesn't have the capability to parse the diff, and you would need to have your signature outside the message to have the correct timestamp anyway.

I did that yesterday, I looked into the diff and saw that the signature doesn't show in the WikiText through templates, so I changed it and just added the tildes after the template... it would make things easier if it could see it, though, but I suppose ~~~~ is simple enough.
