Scratch 3 Concept Sketch

The ST has released a concept image of Scratch 3 here:

I presume it is good to include on the wiki page?

Chooper100 (talk | contribs) 09:56, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

I think its a good idea to add this. I think it may also be a good idea to note the date of the POC.
DownsGameClub (talk | contribs) 11:58, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Unclear statement?

The part of this article where it says:

"It was mentioned that Scratch 3.0 had a barebones VM and an audio engine. The Scratch Team stated that they got Scratch 3.0 to beep the previous day."

was really confusing to me. What is a VM and what does it mean by "they got Scratch 3.0 to beep"? I can't understand what these two things mean, so I imagine that less experienced Scratchers won't be able to either.
Goldfish678 (talk | contribs) 01:44, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

A VM is a virtual machine. According to the file, the Scratch Virtual Machine keeps the state of the abstract syntax tree. In computing, a virtual machine is basically a program that acts like a computer; its instruction set called "bytecode" or "p-code."
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 02:34, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
what about them getting it to beep?
JonathanSchaffer (talk | contribs) 16:06, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
I think there should an article in wiki about Scratch Virtual Machine

Edit war

Ziggy741 and BF10, please stop edit warring over whether the custom block image should be included. Please instead discuss here why it might be a glitch or not and then make a final decision from that.

(As a note, by leaving the image in, I am not taking a side. I don't actually know the answer, so I'm treating the image as valid until proven invalid.)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 04:26, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

In scratch 3.0, according to thisandagain[citation needed], custom blocks are meant to be red.
09:40, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
For jvvg: I was pretty sure it was a glitch. I'm pretty sure it won't say undefined on the real version of Scratch 3.0 and sorry.
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 15:37, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
It's not a glitch. It's been done on purpose.
17:45, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I am not particularly familiar with Scratch 3.0 and could hardly call myself an authority on it. My inclination is to say that the block probably wouldn't say "undefined", but that could also just be placeholder text.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:13, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I'm 100% sure it is not a glitch. It is found as the only block in "Custom Blocks" with nothing else on it (no button, no other stuff). It is 100% checked. It should be changed later. If it is, then give me proof and I will stop. But if you don't have it, then you don't have proof it is a glitch. Besides, it is a prototype and most stuff is placeholders (the new blocks does nothing also). It will be changed in the final version, which won't come out for years. This is ripped from the prototype, NOT the real thing.
EDIT:This file will solve your problem. :)
LeftoftheHeader.gif ♠BF10 talkcontributions 20:54, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Why would they have a block that says undefined? Just because it's in the prototype doesn't mean it's a glitch.
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 21:53, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The "undefined" might just be text used as a placeholder for an example.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 22:52, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I unprotected the page. However, given what I can gather from this discussion, I think the image should stay, at least until we have a better image of a custom block.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:56, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Okay. Maybe when you can make blocks in the prototype there could be a picture of a block someone might make.
Ziggy741 (talk | contribs) 22:59, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

what does that mean? is it like google maps or something?
JonathanSchaffer (talk | contribs) 15:49, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

It means what the Scratch Team plan on doing. :)

scratch (3.0) cat

so we all know what the current scratch cat looks like:
Scratch cat.png
but what about the 3.0 cat? can someone get an image of it?
JonathanSchaffer (talk | contribs) 14:42, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

I can try and get you one - I'll post it on your talk page once uploaded.

here's the cat

Hi! Google does not like it when we have images which are wider than the page screen. Please try to avoid this in the future.

Added New Image

Here it is!
Forested (talk | contribs) 11:28, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

I'm of two minds about this - we already have an official screenshot of the editor, so why add a random screenshot of the current editor?

I had already uploaded the image, I considered the same thing… anyway, people may be interested if they don’t want to go on the actual editor.

Idk about it either, I don't know if it looks to cluttered...

what's the link

Except (talk | contribs) 16:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC) what's the link for the GUI of 3.0?

Go here:

Two Questions

1. Anyone know anything about 'Cosmicat', apparantly the 'new cat'? 2. I've been looking through some of the ST's pages on GitHub and someone's 'compiled' and offline editor together - I read through some later posts and I think it works on Microsoft Windows and Mac PCs. Should I... add?
Redglitter (talk | contribs) 20:51, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

for number 1, i don't have any solid answer or response from the st, but my best guess would be that it's just a sprite they designed specifically for the "cosmicat pizza party" demo to build interest. i can't imagine them replacing the scratch cat now, it's almost iconic at this point. has it been confirmed that cosmicat is the new cat?

August 2018 release: no longer accurate

It has come to my attention that the FAQ page now refers to the release date as "late 2018", rather than August. I wasn't sure how to fix this entirely because some citations contain the outdated August info, but still have other accurate information. Thoughts?
Goldfish678 (talk | contribs) 02:01, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

The preview FAQ page changed recently to no longer say "August 2018" and instead say "later this year". I think that at least one part of this article was changed to reflect that, but take a closer look at the "inaccurate" citations - they might legitimately be ST members saying that 3.0 will be released in August, but it's just that those members are now wrong. I think it's ok to keep the citations for the August release, but perhaps change anything using them to say "it was originally planned to be released in August" rather than saying "it will be released in August".

Do not use 'here' links

Links with descriptions of 'here' and 'click here' generally bring about a poor experience for users. Some screen-readers have features for listing all the links in a page, and the current text is confusing for this; and the use of undescriptive link text also damages SEO. These links, however, are in use in this article. We should consider rephrasing them.

When doing this, we could also—as an aside—include a note that scratch-gui is not the only repository for Scratch 3.0 development, and we could even link each repository with an explanation of what it's for.
-unsigned comment by Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs)

All "here" links have been removed (unless my text search for "here]" missed something). Is that better?
There are links to (I think) all of the scratch-* repos in the "links" section.

List incompatibilities with Scratch 3.0

While the ST has tried to keep Scratch 3.0 as backwards-compatible as possible to Scratch 2.0, there are some minor changes. They are listed on the Compatibility Wiki page, on GitHub.

As well as linking to this page, we may wish to consider listing a selection of the notable changes.
-unsigned comment by Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs)

If there are enough compatibility issues, we may consider making it an article of its own. However, I think it's far simpler and efficient to simply link to the GH wiki page, which is the information source. That way we wouldn't have to continuously update the Wiki page and instead just link to the wiki page (note caps for disambiguation).

Page about 3.0 hate?

I've noticed that a lot of people really hate 3.0 and the people that can access the page should write about it.
-unsigned comment by EastTV (talk | contribs)

Is that against the community guidelines?

Original Mockup

I might be starting to work on a page about the development of 3.0. I remember that when the first beta came out, there was a mockup editor with a black background and this script with lots of graphic effects. This may sound mad, but I clearly remember it. Does anyone else remember this and/or have a screenshot of it?

A lot of stuff got removed

I'd place a template about this, but nothing really describes this...

When the 3.0ARTICLES edits were made, a lot of the content already on the page was removed. I feel like a lot of this was caused simply because the 3.0 version was not kept up-to-date with the current... but there's more to it than that.

Here's the revision before 3.0 updates. Here is the difference after the updates.

Could someone re-add the stuff that got removed in the edits?

Horizontal Blocks

We have the early designs of horizontal blocks (that haven’t been implemented yet) in the Gallery section, but there isn’t any information about them in the article. I’d like to add them, but there are some problems;

  1. I don’t remember when ST announced it.
  2. I don’t know where to put that information in. Should I create a new title called “Horizontal Blocks”?

HighFlyer222 (talk | contribs) 12:14, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

I've never heard of this.... and if it's implemented yet, why should we add it in? I think we should wait until ST announces it officially (unless you can find it)

{{expand}} still needed?

Is the template still needed? Scratch 3.0 is a new thing that if needed expansion, should've been edited multiple times, imo. However, there haven't been too many edits recently which brings me to think that {{expand}} isn't needed anymore. What are your opinions?

Interface section

Wouldn't it be better if the interface section only described the differences between the 3.0 interface and 2.0 interface? The description of the interface should be left to the main Interface page.
