We need to have a disclaimer

Now that we are not related to MIT, we need a disclaimer page covering the following points:

  • The Scratch Wiki is not sponsored or controlled by MIT
  • Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab
  • Though vandalism is rare here since accounts have to be approved, it does happen once in a while and viewers should be aware of that

And any other potential legal points that might arise. Thoughts?

@Apple502j: Only the Scratch Cat and Gobo are trademarked, according to Scratch's ToU.
@290Scratcher: We need to make sure that the drafts are ok legalese-wise since once we put them up they are actually legal documents. We're not going to make the pages until we have everyone's ok on the quality of the drafts.

I would recommend to end a line at the disclaimer in other languages than german stating :"This translation of the German disclaimer text is a service offer and not legally binding! For questions concerning jurisdictional liability, please consider the official German version." This is a standard approach in multi-languages webpages and will save us throuble of hiring a (japanese, english, french, russian, dutch, ...) lawyer.

It would be nice to have all the Google Analytics data presented in one place, instead of showing local activity on each wiki (though each wiki should link to the central presentation page too). Since it seems most appropriate, I'd say the central analytics should be on the Test wiki... maybe tw:Test-Scratch-Wiki:Statistics?

Regular Scratch TV show in japanese public TV

I‘m realy facinated about: googletranslated article about regular Scratch TV show in japanese public TV. NHK is a realy big broadcasting channel in Japan and they seem to have a weekly show about Scratch. So that‘s imho the reason that scratch is so popular in Japan and the japanese Scratch Wiki is growing so fast! The TV show itself looks like a japanese style Sesame Street about learning to code“ 😀( see here ). I would like to transfer that brilliant japanese idea, to motivate more kids to start programming, to other contries specially to germany where we also have big public broadcasting organizations. I met abee (see de:WhoIsWhoInTheScratchCommunity#Kazuhiro_Abe) and people of the japanese TV at Scratch Conference 2016, but I didn‘t pay enough attention to it to follow up that contact.

@Apple502: Are my assumptions above right? If yes: Could you help to spread information about that to the international Scratch Community? Could you start with a traslation of that article to the english scratch wiki?
@All: Are there weekle TV-shows about Scratch in other parts of the world?

Unfortunately, I can't say the same about Hong Kong or China - we were taught Scratch in IT class two years ago (hint: I aced the class) and with a few exceptions everyone despised it. I'm not sure whether that's a consequence of the teaching style, the language itself, or their own coincidental preference, but nobody was keen to continue Scratching after the class was over.

Updating Skin Language + Design independently + Process-Docu

I think to multiply and mantain the new Wiki Skin - that I like very much (thanks kenny2scratch!!! :-) - in all international Wikis, it would be very good to completely separate language and design, so both could be updated separately, since both are changing independently. If new design introduces new language snippets, english should be the “fall back” until translation is done. So the design could be updated at all scratch wikis at once. There should also be a documented process how to translate and transfer updates of design and translation to a certain wiki. And there should be a complete explanation at tw:International-Scratch-Wiki-FAQ.
Mtwoll logo.jpg MartinWollenweber  Talk  Contribs  Directory
06:47, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

I don't really know the best way to handle translations quickly. The Vector skin actually handles translations the same way as the SWS. There's no elegant solution that comes to mind.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
08:31, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
If it's not possible to define the Skin in a separate design + language file naturally, it could be a solution, to build a "translated skin creator" where you put in a "translation friendly skin file set" and a "translation file" and get back a "translated skin file set" of that language that you than can upload. It would be ingenious if people could use this "skin complier" via web-interface by downloading a "file to translate" and upload the "translated file" of their language. (...yes...it's sounding more and more like wikipedia:Pootle or wikipedia:Transifex for translating the mainsite, see: How_to_Translate_Scratch)
Mtwoll logo.jpg MartinWollenweber  Talk  Contribs  Directory
14:26, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
The Scratch website still needs to regularly pull translations from Transifex, it's actually no better than us right now. I think webhooks would be the best thing to use, but it would require Arne to update linux permissions - I'll contact him when I need it.

Block Levels

Here is a suggestion. To have block levels. When a user does something wrong their block level goes up. If their block level reaches 4 or higher then they get blocked on the wiki. When you do something wrong depending on wat you did (list down below) you get your block level higher. All block levels reset after 6 months.

Change block level by 1:

  • Editing another userpace (no warning given before)

Change block level by 2:

  • Editing another userpace (a warning was given before)
  • Vandalising other users' files
  • Turning off a bot without permission (no warning given before)

Change block level by 3:

  • Creating spam pages
  • Vandalising pages

Thoughts? Any other stuff to add?

Logoasqwde.png asqwde talk | contribs 16:53, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Hmm.. I think that this is a good idea but I think we need to give 5 chances and the block level will reset whenever a scratch wiki bureaucrat decides to unblock them.
NYCDOT (talk | contribs)NYCDOT 17:55, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
We basically kinda do that already. When we spot someone editing someone else's userspace, we usually just warn them on their talk page, since that doesn't warrant an immediate block. If they turn off WM without good reason (fyi WM is the only bot that can be turned off via a page), then that's considered vandalism - if it happens again within a short enough amount of time, it's a block. Editing userspace for the second time will likely get a more firm warning.
I don't think we need to organize blocks into levels. We already unconsciously have our own systems (though it's slightly different for each of us), and having this would likely confuse us.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
23:13, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
I agree with Ken. Blocking is a process which should not be publicised, and so it would be best if whatever happened to get them blocked stays between the blocking Bureaucrat and the blocked user (hence why Special:Log/block is hidden). Blocking is also flexible policy and varies by user, and each case is different. It all depends on severity and impact.

Instruct users on the Community Portal to make titles descriptive

I have a suggestion for the Help Box at the top of the CP. Let's add a bullet point which encourages members of the Wiki to make their titles descriptive when asking a question on this page. For example, instead of "I have a question", one could write "How many users are on the Wiki?"; or, instead of "How can I...?", one could write "How do I change the colour of the new nav bar?

This is good not only for accessibility; but also it allows users to quickly decide whether a new section interests them from pages such as the "Recent Changes" list.

This is the same sort of style that is encouraged for new Wiki pages; so why not do the same for sections of the CP, and perhaps other pages designed for communication (such as talk pages).

What are the community's thoughts, should we add a bullet point at the top of this page?

Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 22:28, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Well, the reason is because if you do have it the way you want it, you would be able to see if it was answered already a lot quicker. (and easier). Also, it gets straight to the point what your question or statement is. Lastly, there is no way that someone could just spam a bunch of topics because you are going to need to put a detailed title.
NYCDOT (talk | contribs) 22:52, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm more likely to not care about a post if I can't get a hint on what their post is about via the title. I skim the CP often so have no time to read every post.

An admin banned me for 2 hours because I was adding Template:Delete templates on random articles for April Fool purposes. The reasons were "spamming" and "way too far". How do I deal with this?

Just don't do it again, and keep editing—we love your contributions. I'm not really sure what your question is?
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs) 15:40, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Firstly, the admin should of left a message on your talk page before blocking. I think the reason was because you added the actual delete template to the AF pages. Other than that, as jokebookservice1 said, we enjoy your contributions and keep on editing!
Anamation2.gif KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 16:08, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
In addition, you made an edit, then an admin reverted your edit, then you reverted their reverted version. Generally, this looks like the start of an edit war and further discussion should instead be done on the talk page of the article in question.

PPL Icon.gif ♥PrincessPandaLover Talk | Contributions | Scratch Account 17:00, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I'm sure you were-- it's just you shouldn't've been. While it is important to celebrate April Fool's, it's also important that the Wiki can function smoothly to provide its readers free and easy access to information about Scratch. The deletion template may cause some people to actually review the pages, and it wastes their time while trying to find actual pages that need to be deleted. The template is the same whether it's an April Fools' joke or the real thing. When your edits were reverted, you should've stopped, not reverted back to your version. Thanks, again, for all your other wonderful contributions to the wiki, though.
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs) 17:10, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Here's why I blocked you - please take in all of the context involved and think about what you're doing before doing it.

You were adding the full-fledged {{delete}} template to multiple pages. Not the AF version, but the real version! This template actually signals that the page should be deleted, and I came very close to deleting the page for real before I saw your edit summary. When I undid the edit, I partially explained that adding delete templates for AF is going too far. However, you disregarded that and reverted my edit, and proceeded to add it to another six or so pages.

At the time, it was nighttime for me and I needed to get some sleep. In any other case, I would have posted on your talk page (and indeed, when blocking, I selected the option to allow you to post on your own talk page) and taken further steps if you disregarded that. However, I had very little online time left to spare, and I was afraid you would keep adding the templates while I was asleep, increasing the amount of cleanup that would have to be done afterwards, so I chose the option that would immediately stop you from adding the templates - a temporary block - and rollbacked all the edits.

Now, in the morning, I see you going everywhere and publicizing a block, which we never do, saying you're furious because you were blocked for "no reason". But think about it - when you were adding the delete templates, did you think about the amount of cleanup you would have to do afterwards? Especially since you can't rollback, the more pages you added the template to, the more pages you would have to undo your edits on afterwards. And what if some unsuspecting admin comes online to see that a whole bunch of pages need to be deleted? If you were planning on relying on the EWs/admins to rollback your edits after you were done, that's like asking someone to clean up your mess for you. Granted, you might do that all the time IRL, but this isn't a place where actions have no consequences.

I'm not saying that all of your other edits are garbage and should be reverted. I frequently laugh at the edits you make to AF pages in your spare time, and I appreciate the edits you make to content pages when you do. If all of what I just said makes you feel like you're not "good enough" to stay, then I apologize - please remember that you did get your account request accepted, so you are good enough to be here, and indeed, to stay. I hope you can continue to make constructive edits (or destructive edits to AF pages, I guess, but that's besides the point) and help the Wiki out, and I hope that this will be no more than a minor mistake in your memory. Thank you for your contributions, and Wiki on.

Purplewolves (talk | contribs) 19:51, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
Although redirects aren't quite the same thing as whole pages, it's not worth the amount of effort involved. If people search for a certain trend, at least one of the results will be the Scratch Trends page. There's no need to have redirects to all the trends (especially considering how many there are).

I also feel like this would partially violate S:NOSP though - even though they aren't complete pages, those redirects are taking up entire titles for user-generated content. I still don't like the idea.

Suggestion: Get the CodeMirror extension

The CodeMirror extension is an extension that highlights code in the wikitext editor, making it easier to see what is markup and what isn't.

Since a picture paints a thousand words, please take a look at this screenshot to see what it's like.

I strongly recommend getting it on all wikis, since it is such a useful tool, even if all it does is highlight wikitext. But if there are downsides, then...

Thoughts?

Generally I like Syntax Highliging very much. If this is the best Extension for that + stable + used in respectable other Mediawikis, I say yes. Is it right that it is still in Beta-status?
Mtwoll logo.jpg MartinWollenweber  Talk  Contribs  Directory

Although it's only in beta, it is used on all Wikimedia projects (all language wikis have it, and I think metawiki and mediawikiwiki do too), so I highly recommend it.

TheUltimatum (talk | contribs) 01:07, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
Great, since everyone is so happy with it, I'll add it now. The next question is: would you like this to be on or off by default? It remains a user preference whether you want it on, but do you think the default for new users (or users without a preference set) should be on or off?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory

I'd say on for New Wikians starting in a week so users can turn it off if they don't like it before it turns on automatically.

Creating a Multiplayer Game Misleading Note?

The Creating a Multiplayer Game page has a note on top that's a bit misleading.

Note Note: This no longer works, due to the 128-character limit that was imposed on Cloud Variables in March 2018.

I believe this is untrue, due to the fact that none of the variables in the tutorial should ever exceed 128 characters. I was wondering if it would be OK to remove this? And if there are any other articles that have this note?
TheUltimatum (talk | contribs) 01:03, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

JICYDK, the old domain is now directly redirected to the new one!

So y'all saw the server transfer, and you might have noticed that the old domain was still there and remained frozen for a long while... but Just In Case You Didn't Know, it's now being directly redirected to the new domain! We can now all relax about updating links to the old domain (though we should still update them if possible). There is a little problem with the way the current redirection works (see the topic about "bug with [wiki] in forums") but otherwise it's fully redirecting.

Error with Joining Wikis in other languages

It won't allow me to use my current account, using a different account is not allowed, and using a fake username will disallow the comment for verification. Does anybody know a solution? As a note, the language in question doesn't have any wiki guidelines.
Bla-Games (talk | contribs) 21:43, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

The reasoning for this is you only joined the English Wiki. You are going to need to make another application for each language wiki you want to join, as far as I am concerned.
NYCDOT (talk | contribs) 23:10, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
Yep, getting an account on the English wiki does not give you an account on all wikis. Indeed, you won't get any special treatment for having an account here. You'll need to go through the other wikis' request processes to join them.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
03:00, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
I figured that out, but it won't allow me to create a new wiki account using the same Scratch account. I've tried to submit for a new account already. It gives me an error with sending the email.
Bla-Games (talk | contribs) 12:32, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
Which wiki is this? If it's anything other than the German and English wikis, the only things you provide are your username, email address, and request notes (e.g. see ja:Special:RequestAccount). There's no automatic account verification. Handling of the request will likely be done through email.

Policy on deleting user talk page messages

I have seen several people notify other people telling them that deleting threads off their talk page without archiving them is not allowed. In order to keep this from continuing, I would like to explain what the deal is with that.

Under the userspace policy, you are, in fact, allowed to delete threads from your talk page. The rule is as follows:

You are only allowed to remove entire threads if the issue has been resolved. Other users may put the thread back if they have more to say.

– Userspace policy (linked above)

As long as the user removes the entire thread (i.e. doesn't just remove one message) and the issue is considered resolved, then they are allowed to do so. While this policy means that we may have to dig through page history to find if a user is repeatedly making the same mistakes, it also means that if a user makes some mistakes when they join but then learn from them, they will not have to deal with the potential embarassment of having other users see them. While everyone here is expected to be respectful to other users, it can still be a source of embarassment to users to see evidence of mistakes they made before.

So, in short, provided that the issue is resolved and the user deletes the entire thread, please do not notify users for deleting threads from their talk page.

Thank you for reading, and Wiki on! (Is "Wiki On!" a common phrase? It should be if it's not.)

To do a hard refresh:
On Windows, do Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R

Once you've Yes Done that, your cache should be cleared and you should see the newest version.
