Blocks Plugin is not working at international Scratch-Wikis: Who could help?
Done
The Blocks Plugin is not working at most international scratch-wikis. At de: and id: it works in general, but there are still some bugs (more than in the english wiki), but at the other wikis I think it doesn't even work.It could be that also in the forums the Blocks Plugin works better than here in the english wiki (e.g. there are menus for blocks), but I'm not sure about that.
Some people of the english wiki got edit and admin rights at the international wikis (see: de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch) and user:jvvg has even FTP-rights to all international scratch-wikis, so he could install anything that is nessesary, but he told me that he's is not a "Blogs Plugin Specialist" like some other here. I know that the original authors of the BlocksPlugin user:blob8108 (Special:Contributions/blob8108) and user:JSO ( Special:Contributions/JSO ) only come here from time to time. So who could help? Thank you very much in advance!
@user:Rumanti: What is the exact state of the Blocks Plugin at id:?
See:
- de:Scratch-Wiki:Hilfe:Block_Plugin_Test
- ja:User_talk:Mtwoll#About Scratch Block plugin
- id:Pembicaraan_Scratch-Indo-Wiki:Portal_Komunitas#Japanese Wiki
- I think this was solved later by eMail between user:Rumanti and user:blob8108
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 16:30, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- The Scratchblocks2 Plugin on the Scratch-Indo-Wiki is quite glitchy, especially with C blocks. Scripts with C blocks that work on the forums often doesn't work on the wiki- though it worked beautifully for mostly everything else. I will find a real comparable example some time later :) As for the Indonesian version of Scratchblocks2- yes, this was solved from exchanging emails- the finished product is a repository fork - https://github.com/Rumanti/Indonesian-mw-Scratchblocks2
Rumanti (talk | contribs) 14:53, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
- FWIW the version of scratchblocks on this wiki is much older than the one on the forums. We need scmb1 to update it! :)
blob8108 (talk | contribs) 00:50, 3 November 2015 (UTC)- At the international wikis we can update and test it without help (e.g. of user:scmb1), e.g. user:jvvg has FTP-access there, see de:Scratch-Wiki:Watch. We also need a version that does all language in one scratch-wiki for our "Scratch-Wiki-Incubator" http://test.scratch-wiki.info

Suggesting Switch-Box-Templates for "Scratch Versions, Modifications, Players..." + "Scratch-Community-Events in real life"
In the DACH-Scratch-Wiki we have a "Switch-Box-Template" that connects all articles about "Scratch Versions, Modifications, Players...", see de:template:ScratchVersionen. Couldn't that also be helpful for the English Scratch-Wiki? The idea behind it is, that a reader, who is interested about one special Version, Mod or Player of Scratch is likely interested in the whole "technologically context", like a reader who is interested in one block likely is interested in other blocks. We have the same things with Scratch-Community-Events in "real life", see: de:Vorlage:Ereignisbalken. What do you think?

Request for Article from Non-Editor
Someone has requested to me personally that we have some kind of article or part of an already existent article on installing Adobe Air on Linux. He claims this is how it is done https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/239875/ and would be useful for the Wiki. Thoughts?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 17:07, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
- I can't attest to the accuracy or lack thereof in the post, but I don't think there's anything wrong with having an article on installing Adobe AIR, as it's an important component of installing Scratch offline. Maybe it would be a good idea to include it in How to Download the Scratch Offline Editor?

WikiMonitor is going to be down until I can fix a broken piece of hardware on my end. This will probably take a few days.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:38, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- Do you want me to temporarily run it? I have the necessary hardware. 18:45, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- If I have to, I have other places I can run it. However, I would prefer not to give control of the account to someone else (it's nothing personal, I just would prefer not to give out passwords).

- This is a pretty short-term thing (until I can get a new ethernet switch), so I don't think it's worth it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 18:52, 3 March 2017 (UTC)- True, but what if you go on holiday? 19:13, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
- This actually happened a few years ago, and there were a lot of issues. I don't foresee myself being out for any extended period of time (>2 weeks) any time soon, and 2 weeks is short enough that I can just leave it unmanned. I haven't actually touched WM for a month now except to restart it every few days, which I can do through a cron job.

Cite multiple sources
If I have one source that can only back up a point if a second source backs up the first one, but neither of the sources individually will back up the point.
Here is a particular example. The point is "The greater-than block compares strings by their ASCII values" and the first source is a place in the source-code of Scratch showing the implementation of the block, and the second source shows how string comparisons are handled in ActionScript.
My question is, what should I do? Do I provide both as individual sources (e.g. My point goes here[1][2]) or should I put both of them in one source or what?
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs)
- I think the best option in this case would be to use two separate sources but put one after the other. Anyone who looks at the references can figure out how they tie together.

Welcome to another Wiki Wednesday! This is the time where we get to take an amazing article and showcase it to the entire Scratch website!
Now for the community aspect of it. Everyone is welcome to submit their suggestions for featured article! Please suggest articles that are:

- Have a few images.
- Meet wiki standards.

- Ooh... Yay! I like suggesting articles for these. How about Draft?
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 22:17, 24 March 2017 (UTC)- I have an idea. We also pick an image off the page and set it to a featured image. 09:51, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
- @banana439monkey: That would hugely reduce the pool of images we can pick from. Not all featured articles will have an image!
- @bigpuppy: Draft is a good choice! It could be reworded for clarity, but is otherwise nice.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 05:07, 27 March 2017 (UTC)- Those featured pages without pictures, we could get an image from a past featured article. 16:35, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- Still, that hugely reduces what we can pick from. For some articles, we can only pick from 1-2 images.
- When it comes to picking featured images, we want interesting images, and reducing what we can pick from hurts that.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 20:43, 28 March 2017 (UTC)- bigpuppy: I submitted Draft as our proposal, but it ended up being too short, so now Report is the Wiki Wednesday article.

Why is that page not protected? Anyone could wreck it and make the archive system defunct! Is there a particular reason? I know it's not protected because I was going to look at the source, assuming it was protected but I saw "edit" instead of "view source".
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 05:21, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
- There's an undo button for a reason, someone editing it would be easy to reverse. The reason why pages like the news are protected is because they're highly visible, that box is only really relevant for contributors. It's not like protecting it would do anything either, someone could easily just edit the CP and remove the transclusion or something.

Hello! I am currently working on a guide about how to be a good applicant, and we are adding a section about the wiki applications. - As someone who actually processes these requests, I can tell you we are looking for one very specific thing: Can the requesting user follow instructions? The most important part of the Wiki is being able to follow instructions so we can maintain the standard of writing and community necessary for high-quality articles. We check this by having them read S:CONTRIB and seeing if their request meets the requirements on that page. Also, scmb1 said a while ago that we can't publicly release rejected requests, so unfortunately no. However, we do have some examples we wrote (based on common things we see) that can help you.

Hey, I was looking through Special:ListUsers and found several users whose names were redlinks (e.g. User:-Through-), and if I tried to navigate to them, they would actually ask me to create the page... Why are these users red and how is it possible for me to create their pages?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 01:56, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
- Also, one red user even a) has a talk page and b) has 2 edits! What?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 01:58, 27 April 2017 (UTC)- That means the user page not exist, so it will turn into edit mode
Agarraga (talk | contribs) 09:06, 3 May 2017 (UTC) - Regarding 15matwal, the log for the page shows they were created in 2012, when a different user-creation system was in place. User pages weren't automatically created back then.

It's sad... the number of admins and the number of users seem to be declining in every wiki...

Is there a Chinese SW? 有沒有中文SW存在?
^^... I speak Cantonese and Mandarin and read/write traditional Chinese. I want to see if I can help. 我會説廣東話和普通話,而我會讀寫繁體中文。我想知道我可不可以幫手。

New FPC
They've been fpc for like three days and no one noticed: simonow.

A trend...
I want to add "When Griffpatch follows you" to Scratch Trends, but that trend seems kind of small/new and could break the rule of not talking about users unless they're really famous...(I'm putting it here because I haven't seen people on the talk page for Scratch Trends lately)
Nickeljorn (talk | contribs) 21:26, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
- I've never even seen this trend; I saw one project that said that and never saw any others. I don't really think it's a significant trend. Griffpatch is very famous, but that trend isn't. I recommend you don't add that.

New FPC
I'm putting this up today because of the egregious delay for the last one. I want to make sure that doesn't happen so severely again... -BitmapArtist- will become FPC tomorrow.

bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 00:47, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- Done. I'm sorry about the last one. I was very busy all last week and my biggest priority was patrolling edits rather than updating the news. Remember that nobody here edits the Wiki full-time (or if you do, you should consider taking a break), and all of us are living lives outside of here. Please don't be offended if we can't get to everything immediately. However, that being said, if you have something urgent (like vandalism), let me know on my talk page, and I will make every effort to respond as soon as I can.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:13, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- It's okay. I can understand having a busy week... I do actually edit the Wiki full-time (despite having school to deal with) so I guess the only thing I can think of is making me EW...? But elections aren't happening anytime soon.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:34, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- We have elections whenever we feel a need for them. However, we try not to hold them any more frequently than we have to since they take several weeks and often are a distraction from everything else we need to be doing.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:06, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- I know, I was just mentioning how infrequent they are.

Pi Day
Is Pi Day a celebrated holiday on the Scratch Wiki? If it isn't, I suggest that it should be since it is actually a pretty major holiday all around the world (though it's not a government public holiday, we even celebrate it here in Hong Kong). If it is already celebrated on the SW, just tell me; if not, tell me whether it's accepted. I have read S:HOLIDAY.

April Fools' Namespaces
I see a bunch of April Fools' Day articles involve modifying either interface text (mediawiki namespace) or special pages. Unfortunately, special pages aren't like regular pages and can't be overwritten, and I would rather not modify interface text for April Fools' Day. For this reason, please make all future articles only for mainspace articles and templates.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:03, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- And userspace... that can be overwritten too, right?
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 12:32, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- Yes, userspace is ok. However, in that case you are still required to respect others' userspace.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:06, 16 May 2017 (UTC)- I know, I was talking about making an April fool's version of your own user space, like I and many others have done.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:20, 17 May 2017 (UTC)- What's wrong with modifying MediaWiki pages? They seem normal.
- ♥PrincessPandaLover Talk | Contributions | Scratch Account 02:26, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- MediaWiki pages aren't really "pages" in the classic sense. While I could overwrite them for AF day, I am not comfortable doing that, as they are actually important for the proper operation of the Wiki (in a sense that the other pages and templates aren't).

Referring to what Jacob said https://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Talk:Scratch_Wiki_Home#Can_someone_.22undelete.22_this_file.3F
I have a weird idea. I doubt it will work. One would make a page. It's a directory of every unused page people still want. People apply for the page to be added on the talk page.
15:44, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- Couldn't people just add a page for themselves?
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 23:52, 16 May 2017 (UTC) - Wait, could you further explain what you're talking about? I don't really understand what you mean.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:19, 17 May 2017 (UTC) - Well jvvg's comment was referring mainly to files. Any files that are not used in some form of an article or user page are deleted every so often. I suppose if the images want to be kept it's best they are just used rather than having a bunch of unused images. I guess?
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 02:43, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Referring to the section header of this section, by the way, you can simply do Talk:Scratch Wiki Home#Can someone "undelete" this file?. The current title is way too long.
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 04:40, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
- You know, the reason the files were deleted is because they were unused. There is an easy solution to keep them from being deleted if they are unused: use them. All you need to do is make a subpage of your userpage and put all the files you don't want deleted on it, and then they will no longer be unused and therefore not automatically deleted.
