Wiki Cleanup
Not done We haven't started it yet! I was thinking, some pages need to be simplified. Others are too simple. And there are more that need updating. The stubs. Also, a bunch of files need reverting/updating. I bet there is at least some vandalism on at least 1 page. I thought, let's clean up the Wiki! VoxBot might help, because we can ask it questions and they'll get answered. I was thinking call it "Wiki Cleanup." It would look like this:
when gf clicked forever if <the current page is a stub?> then expand this page end if <the current page is too complicated?> then simplify this page end if <the current page is too simple?> then make this page slightly more complex//Notice that I said "complex," not "complicated." We would keep it easy to understand, but make it describe what it is about in more of detail. end if <the current page is unhelpful?> then ask an admin to delete this page end if <the current page has been vandalized?> then un-vandalize this page end if <the current page is a file?> then if <the current file is outdated?> then update this file end if <the current file needs to be reverted?> then revert this file end end end
Maybe we could do it every 2 months or something?

- We're sort of trying to do this all of the time, it just can be forgotten at times though. Thank you for the idea! Maybe it could be something we do regularly, sort of as a collective push. Maybe we could add some incentives?
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 23:01, 5 January 2016 (UTC)- Sorry, I don't know what incentives are. I mainly got the idea from reading about Operation: Cleanups on the TBG article. Should we start it?
Mitopolis (talk | contribs) 16:35, 6 January 2016 (UTC)- This is a response to here and my talk page. Incentives are basically rewards to make people what to edit more. For example, you have to mow my lawn. The incentive is, if you mow my lawn today, I will give you five pieces of hand-made chocolate.
- On second thought, I don't think we need a special event to be editing the Wiki. If people have time and want to edit, they will.

Should We Move Content on the Computer Science to a New Article?
Not done
I realize now that when I wrote the Computer Science article a while back, I put in a lot about computer hardware, which is realistically a separate field. Do you think I should make a page on Computer Hardware? After all, it relates to Scratch, because you can't run Scratch if you have no hardware!
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 18:33, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
- While I guess you're right in it relating to Scratch, it doesn't really relate in the sense of a geared-towards-children's block programming language xD I think that the materials listed in the article are very advanced for the younger, more popular age range in Scratch, and as such, should be more contained. While I completely agree it's great to have it, I think those topics should be less focused on and more together in one place. :) However, your topic covers a very wide range of information, so I do think a seperate article would be appropriate.

Spanish Scratch Wiki + The Wiki Times
Hello fellow Wiki Editors, administrators, and Experienced Wikians! You may or may not know about the Spanish Scratch Wiki (which is currently on the Test Wiki) You can find a link to it here. We desperately need other users to help us out with the Spanish Scratch Wiki. If you speak Spanish or even better you are a native spanish speaker, please create an account on the Test Wiki either through here or through here. We would greatly appreciate any help we can get. If you know someone on Scratch that can either speak Spanish or is a native Spanish speaker please refer them to the Spanish Scratch Wiki and ask them if they would like to join and also tell them HOW to join. Any help and support would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, let me know! I should be pretty active these next two weeks because I am on spring break!
If you'd like to be a reporter for the Wiki Times, we will be releasing our next newspaper on Friday. If you'd like to join please go here. Scratch On!

The international Scratch Wikis need your help
Every author of the English Scratch Wiki is welcomed to help as an "International Scratch Wiki Coach" even without knowing other languages, because for motivating, coaching and teaching English works very well. It's also interesting for making international contacts and doing good deeds in a globalized world. :-)
We have been quite successful with starting wikis of other languages as you can see here:
- http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test-Scratch-Wikis
- http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:ListUsers
- http://test.scratch-wiki.info/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&days=1000&from=&limit=1000
But because there is so much work left to do, we urgently need wiki-authors who can help. Some of the international authors are very productive but most of them do not know much about working at a wiki and will loose faith when working there alone. It would be helpful, if everybody of the active international wikians would have a guide to help and motivate him: So feel free to go to their Scratch-User profile and start a conversation like:
“ | You did start editing the <one language> Scratch-Wiki at <http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Fr:Scratch_Wiki_Accueil> Wouldn't you like to continue? I am an author of the English Scratch Wiki and would like to help you build up your Scratch Wiki by showing you how wiki-things like templates, categories, cp, discussion and so on work at the English wiki, so you can start doing it in your language.
What do you think?" |
” |
Also there is lots of organizational work left to be done, see:
- http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/International-Scratch-Wiki-FAQ
- http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test-Scratch-Wiki_talk:Community_Portal
- Also some of the "Real-Wikis" are not "self-maintaining" (we founded them before having the test-wiki idea and IMHO not all of them are strong enough to survive. (see here).
At the moment it seems to me that only user:LiFaytheGoblin, user:ErnieParke and I are caring regularly for the international wiki community. We meet in an online hangout called "International Scratch Club" every Monday at 9:00 p.m (German time, I think's that's 15:00 (or 3:00 PM) at the east cost, see de:Scratch-Wiki:Scratch_Club the orange entries there are the English agendas/protocols (blue ones are German)): We would be happy if experienced scratch-wikians would join and help. You can request an account at http://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Special:RequestAccount, only mention you want to help and give a link to your existing wiki-account. We hope many of you will join, or start caring again if they already joined. Thank you in advance!

Although my networking issues still persist and I still have to use a proxy to access the Wiki, I was able to run WikiMonitor through a proxy as well and it is back online. Everything should work as it did before, just beware that it is slightly slower than before due to the proxy.
That being said, please do not make edits designed to trip WM. If I need to test anything, I will.

Overuse of Not Done template?
Done
I think that people are overusing the Not Done template to 'pin/feature' their post so almost through every archive everyone will see it, meaning that the archive of the current posts doesn't wipe out all of the conversations. So after time everyone will use the Not Done template and the archive wipe means nothing to us then.
If people were to actually change it to Done when they actually had finished their post - I wouldn't be saying this.
Golden-scratch (talk | contribs) 12:51, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- I think we already have a solution for that problem: Every old thread that is "not done" can be removed from the CP by coping it to S:CPND and only put it's Header to #Not done. That solution was created, after multiple times threads that were important but needed a lot of time, have been archived wrongly.

Scratchblocks Extension (Possible) Update
Over the past several of days, I have been working in collaboration with blob8108 (link) to update the Scratch Wiki Scratchblocks plugin. It will bring the plugin up to the same level as the plugin in the Scratch forums, and also add a few new features. As blob8108 said: "Angled booleans, nicer rendering, lots of fixes, better translation support, etc etc..."
Once the plugin is polished and finished, I will test it out on the international Scratch Wikis. If that works, I will check with the ST if it is acceptable to update the English wiki's plugin.
As heads up, I believe this will break a few blocks that switch a block's type. Thankfully, most of those will be in List of Block Workarounds.

Hi dudes! v3.1 of scratchblocks is now released, much joy. ErnieParke has finished up the wiki plugin update too. I suggest you politely ask scmb1 or rschamp or some other appropriate ST member to pull in the new wiki plugin.
@ErnieParke probably a good idea if you put together a quick message saying what they need to do to update it.

I personally think this template is workaroundable. For example {{NotUseful}}
could replace {{NotUseful}}
. In fact, they're both identical if you look {{NotUseful}}
comes out as {{NotUseful}} and {{NotUseful}}
comes out as {{NotUseful}}.
07:50, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, both approaches are almost identical. At the same time, approach #2 is quicker to type. I believe a few Scratchers prefer it too.
- Overall, I see no major benefits to either method, so it would be best to leave this to user preference.

Wiki Wednesday for June
Hi everyone! Another successful Wiki Wednesday has rolled around, and it was a success too! To be honest, it's nice to think how WW lets us become more connected to the main website. In fact, since WW started, we seem to get many more account requests here at the Scratch wiki.
It is now time to pick our next Wiki Wednesday article. Suggestions are appreciated! I actually posted this a bit late, so we will be making a decision in two days.
p.s.: Unfortunately, I forgot to collect the page view statistics for April so I can't give any stats on how well April's WW went.

Wish List for our international Scratch Wikis
I started to write a wish list for our international scratch wikis. I am happy about everyone who helps to make some of the wishes come true step by step (I know that some of them will take years, but every long way starts with the first step ;-). See Details at the community portal of the Test Wiki:

Fun fact
If I'm getting this data right, we have created about 670 accounts and processed about 2000 requests since the account request system was implemented (to get the amount of accounts I just looked at the first account I could find with the welcome message and for the amount of requests, I looked at the latest request id).
This means that we accept about 27% of the account requests here. Any thoughts?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:27, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- Wow, that's a small percentage. We should teach our kids how to type a proper request.

- Wow. xD 08:09, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

- Pianogirl84 ♬ Talk ♬ Contributions 12:57, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- If you want to see the particularly bad Wiki account requests we get, check out our Tumblr blog. About half of the requests that we reject end up on that blog, and the other half are ones that don't have egregious flaws but still miss important parts of S:CONTRIB.

- Wow. xD
The best part is that I always get a few people who submit requests of the quality that go on the Tumblr blog who get a rejection message (the rejection message is "Your Scratch Wiki account request was rejected because you did not read http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/S:CONTRIB prior to submitting your request.") and then tell me that they did read the page. I guess they figure that I don't actually check if the followed the instructions on it. Some of these people who protest the rejections are people who say stuff that doesn't even remotely follow the instructions are submitted by people whose accounts don't meet the criteria.

New featured images
We haven't updated the featured images in quite some time, so now it's time to pick some new ones. I already picked one, but there are two more spots open for community input. If you have any suggestions, please suggest an image. Around this time tomorrow, we will pick the two we think would be the best suited for the front page.

Incorrect Dates
Hey, guys! So, I saw the Scratch news on the Wiki Home Page, and it says that Pepeatan_Gaming became FPC on May 23rd, but this date is incorrect. I believe it is supposed to say May 30th. Thanks for reading this!

Help page?
Done
Maybe we could create something like Help:Archiving a talk page? What are your thoughts about this?
08:26, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, I think its a good idea could create something like that, or we could create something that helps people with creating a userspace, and have that as a section. There is a Userpage Shop run by Metropolis perhaps they would be interested in helping. I think it would be a good idea theres not many people who do archive talk pages it might be good to help out.
- What do you think about the Help:Making A Userpage idea? User:Minerman6/Signature
- The userspace thing really wouldn't have any steps since you can put what you want in your userspace, but there are two methods on archiving a talk page. 09:14, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
- I understand that you can put what you want in your userspace. I was thinking along the lines of making tables and buttons, like the friend request button, or the leave a message button. The userpage shop has some examples of these. I think that archiving a talk page is a good idea, but I also feel like the ones that i have suggested are also useful. I think that both articles would work well as one article but if you want to make that article, then I would offer any help I can, although I have not actually got any talk page archives myself, if you would like my help then I offer my full support but consider the other sections I have stated.
Minerman6 (talk | contribs) 09:23, 4 June 2016 (UTC)- Should we start to make it then? we could work on it together, and that way it will get done quicker and be more accurate, is that something you would be willing to do?
- I made the page actually, but you could help make it better. 19:12, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Advertising
Hi, I have started a shop on Scratch, and I use the sandbox for writing down upcoming projects and planing what I am going to do on Scratch. In my sandbox I have a list of projects that I am making for the shop, if I was to write a to-do list and upcoming projects here, and link that to the shop would it count as advertising?
Minerman6 (talk | contribs) 16:51, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
- As long as all the links are only in your sandbox or your user space that should be fine! :)

A suggestion for the home page
Maybe instead of saying "The Scratch Wiki" in the bottom left corner, it could say "About the Scratch Wiki" or "What is the Scratch Wiki?" since it's really just telling more about the Wiki.. Just an idea :P

Please set your emails
The email system is back up. This means that everyone who doesn't have an email address or hasn't confirmed their address needs to do so. Please go to Special:Preferences and look at the bottom in the "Email" box. Next to "Email confirmation", if it doesn't say "Your email address was confirmed on some date" then please set your email and confirm it. This is necessary in case you forget your password. Even if you don't think you'll forget your password, there's always the chance you will, and it seriously takes thirty seconds to set your email.

New template?
Not done
Why don't we have a template that says "This article would normally break the Scratch Wiki's guidelines. However, an exception has been made for it because" and then the reason? What do you think about this?
18:49, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
- I might support this.
Swampert11 (talk | contribs) 22:26, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
- generally we would like templates to be relevant to the readers instead of wiki editors. in this case, it doesn't relate to readers so I don't think it should be a template

- Ah, but why is it used on pages? 15:50, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- It was put in as a pilot test, but the rest of the Wiki community never strongly approved it. We have just been too lazy to remove them.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:07, 9 June 2016 (UTC)- But then someone could request for the page to be deleted with the reason "This goes against the guidelines" - Without that template, we'll probably have a lack of pages. 06:40, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

All of those pages are either obviously very important to Scratch history/culture and/or have had significant discussion first, so the EWs and admins will be aware of the situation anyway. Remember that we do read talk pages before deleting pages and don't automatically delete everything marked for deletion with a reason that looks valid.

Echo Extension
What are people's thoughts on installing the Echo Extension here on the wiki? I think this was discussed briefly a while back somewhere but I'd like to bring it up again. The main feature of Echo is the ability to ping other users by linking to their username, which then sends them a notification. Each user can customize it in their preferences to change what they get notified for. For example, you can get a notification when one of your edits is reverted, or when someone links to a page that you created. In addition, we could also install the thanks extension to go with it, which allows you to thank users for their edits. Thoughts?
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 06:07, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- This has actually been suggested before (also here), however the discussion was eventually dropped and a conclusion was never really reached. As I did at the time, I still support installing that extension. The only real concern I saw about that extension was that it would make the Wiki a popularity contest. However, talk pages already have that potential and I don't see people obsessing over how many messages they get on their talk pages.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:41, 13 June 2016 (UTC)- It actually sounds nice. Yes some might use the wiki as social media, but they still have to get through the request notes! I mean, I'm only active here on the CP right now, but it MIGHT be helpful. Or maybe not. I see two sides. Yes it would be helpful, but it also might have people make the Wiki like a social networking site. So I'm undecided. But I AM leaning towards yes.
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 15:30, 13 June 2016 (UTC)- I personally would like to see this implemented. It could be quite useful. I don't see the popularity factor as a huge concern as most of our contributors are pretty mature, and as Programmer1121 said, if you can make it through the request notes than you really do want to be a wiki contributor (we are very thorough when accepting applications for those who do not know :P)
- St19_Galla Talk • Contribs 16:12, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- @jvvg: Yeah, I knew it had been discussed somewhere, thanks for the link.
- @Programmer and Galla: Yeah, that's a good point! About people using it as social media: I agree, we already kind-of have this in the form of talk pages, but this isn't even that bad, as no one can see your notifications. It's pretty much like notifications on the Scratch main site.
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 22:32, 13 June 2016 (UTC)- I agree. 07:09, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- I tested out the extension on my test server, and I have two important things to say: 1. You are only notified if someone links to your userpage in a message that is signed with 4 tildes. 2. The notifications will only show up as an entry in the user menu (where you can access your talk page, watchlist, preferences, etc.) and just show up as a number showing the amount of notifications you have (it will just say "0", "1", etc. as an entry in that menu). If we want to change this to say "n notifications" to make it more human-readable, we can do that, but that will require slightly modifying the code. If we want the notifications to be even more obvious (like talk page notifications), then we will also need to modify the skin. This all can be done, but I want everybody to be aware.

Notice about replacing content on AF pages
Just as a general notice to everybody, on the April Fools' pages (at User:Jvvg/AF), when writing, please try to use original ideas. This means trying to minimize repeating themes between articles that aren't directly related to Scratch (stuff like energy units or the Scratch Team being a group of cats is directly related to Scratch, so it's worth keeping that for consistency). Also, when writing, if there is a theme that was in place for the April Fools' day this year (look at the edit history to see), you are welcome to replace it with a new theme in order to cycle the humor.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:11, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for settling the dispute! Should existing jokes which don't relate to Scratch be removed?
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 01:24, 16 June 2016 (UTC) - Again, huge thanks. I've also talked to PPL on her Scratch profile about agreeing to the same thing (or at least something virtually identical) on the TBGs as well, so that the entire situation between us can be declared over once and for all. Huge thanks. Accepting tolerance and embracing diversity is exactly what both of us needed. Thank you!
TheHockeyist (talk | contribs) 01:38, 16 June 2016 (UTC)- @Chibi-Matoran: A few jokes such jokes are nice, but having a lot would make the article seem less like an article.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 01:53, 16 June 2016 (UTC)- Thank you! I shall commence the desonicification and dekerbalfication.
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 01:56, 16 June 2016 (UTC)- Okay then. I feel that it would be best to start anew and act as if this entire thing has never happened.
TheHockeyist (talk | contribs) 02:04, 16 June 2016 (UTC)- @Chibi-Matoran: Your goal should not just be removal of Sonic or Kerbals. The whole point here was to encourage cycling new ideas, not just removing old ones. We want this to remain peaceful and as non-personal as possible, so please only replace stuff as you come up with new ideas, and put your ideas on the "articles" for which you think they are the most applicable, regardless of what's already there.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:10, 16 June 2016 (UTC)- That could be a better idea. Alternatively, we could just start anew and see what happens. I'm not against that. It would be a way to start fresh with new possible ideas instead of being locked into our old ones. I want to embrace diversity and variety as you said, so why not start on a blank sheet and see what comes to mind?

Wiki Wednesday: July
It's time for another Wiki Wednesday! Last month we featured Scratch in the Media because of the CN + Scratch collaboration that is currently happening. Because of that, we ignored some suggestions. If I am correct, last month we suggested List of Block Workarounds, Frequently Asked Questions, Cloud Variables, and Custom Blocks. This month we can choose what we want. What are our preferences or new ideas?
On that note, I just realized we need to update Scratch in the Media.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 17:13, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
- We should do Frequently Asked Questions
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 21:17, 21 June 2016 (UTC)- Didn't we already do Variable? :P I just think it would be weird to do the Variable and Cloud Variable article...

Use a gender neutral pronoun?
It says "congratulate on his/her profile", but perhaps it would be better to substitute "his/her" for "their", in case the person featured does not identify with the gender binary.
Not sure though...
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs) 21:50, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- The problem is that "their" tends to seem gramatically awkward. However, I do still support inclusivity, so I want to see what everybody else thinks. (A note before you post though: we aim to be inclusive to everybody, so don't post anything rude or offensive. Seriously.)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:32, 24 June 2016 (UTC)- How about "this person's profile" (although it is a bit wordy)
Jokebookservice1 (talk | contribs) 22:57, 24 June 2016 (UTC)- That could work. What does everyone else think?
jvvg (talk | contribs) 23:03, 24 June 2016 (UTC)- That sounds good. It sounds smoother then "his/her".
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:01, 25 June 2016 (UTC)- I do not like to use he/she, him/her or /his/her because they are awkward and binarize gender. I respect correct grammar, but I believe that equality and ethics are more important, and that grammar rules change with society. After all, in the past, male pronouns were used when gender was unknown, but this is now considered sexist. I believe that "their" should be used.
- Also, do you know if any existing curators are nonbinary?
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 00:59, 25 June 2016 (UTC)
- That sounds good. It sounds smoother then "his/her".
- That could work. What does everyone else think?
- How about "this person's profile" (although it is a bit wordy)
- Even though I'm not around much, I want to say that I support using "their", which is perfectly grammatical and has been for hundreds of years. Also, for what it's worth, although I haven't been curator, I am nonbinary and use they/them pronouns in addition to she/her (despite my username that I'm stuck with -_-), and I don't think it's unreasonable to guess that other Scratchers who might be curator could as well. "Their" is all-inclusive, and therefore should be used. Just my two cents.
veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 02:11, 26 June 2016 (UTC)- I agree with veggie here. "They" is perfectly acceptable.

Update on sigs and account requests
I emailed scmb1 earlier about the fact that HTTP requests are failing and thus preventing ScratchSigs from working and preventing the account request system from checking the project comments. This was the response I got:

Change "There are also other, smaller wikis." to "There are also other smaller wikis." It just flows better, y'know?
ProgrammingChicken (talk | contribs) 22:52, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
- Interesting! I changed it, but I wonder if you add the comma or not.

- I believe that the new version could imply that this wiki is small.
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 23:38, 2 July 2016 (UTC)- I agree with Chibi here. I think the new version implies that this wiki is small as well. Also, I think that sentence is used with coordinate adjectives, which is where each adjective modifies the noun that follows separately. 'Other' and 'smaller' each modify the noun 'wikis' separately so they need a comma. I'm not sure that this is the case here, but I *think* that's what it is :P

Minor News Change
So, I noticed that on the news on the homepage, for front page curator, it says him/her. I was thinking that if a non-binary person got chosen for FPC, they wouldn't be accurately described by him/her. A simple fix would be to change the language to they. It would be simple and easy, as well as improve the level of support for LGBT+ Scratchers.
KathrynJaneway (talk | contribs) 15:03, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
- This was already suggested, and we did implement that suggestion. The two most recent curator announcements do say "their profile", and we just didn't change the existing ones since nobody complained about those specifically (we will change them if the respective curator asks us to).

The explore link at the top of the page doesn't work anymore, and I think it's because the explore page url has changed with the new update. Can admins fix this, or is it a problem with the main site? >_<

Account request Tumblr
Hi all! I recently learned of the Bad Scratch Wiki Account Request Notes tumblr. It concerns me for a few reasons. Making fun of Scratchers, even those who did not follow instructions, is not really in the spirit of the Scratch community. Scratch welcomes people of all ages (as young as eight years old) and backgrounds (non-English speakers) -- and making fun of these folks’ grammar seems pretty unkind. In addition, the blog makes the Scratch wiki feel quite unwelcoming. Although it makes sense to me to require account applications and limit who can edit the wiki, I’d rather we tried harder to cultivate a spirit of inclusion rather than making the wiki feel like an exclusive “club” that you have to be cool enough to join.
I’m wondering what your thoughts are on this. I’m hoping that you’ll refrain from talking about this blog on the Scratch website, where it might discourage folks from applying to the wiki or, worse, where Scratchers who wrote the applications may see that they are being made fun of. I’m also hoping that you’ll consider making the blog private (or shutting it down), but obviously it’s up to you what you do off of the Scratch website. But I hope you’ll keep in mind that, as wiki editors (and admins), you’re leaders in the Scratch community.
Scmb1 (talk | contribs) 22:04, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
- Agreed, it would be nice to shut down the blog. It does feel like it is picking on Scratchers, and although it may seem fun to look through bad request notes, it's definitely not promoting an inclusive atmosphere.
- Edit: Scmb1, I found this post in a CP archive. You might be interested: link
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 22:22, 12 July 2016 (UTC)- Thanks- that's useful :)
Scmb1 (talk | contribs) 22:39, 12 July 2016 (UTC)- Hi Scmb1. Thanks for bringing up these concerns. I agree that the blog could very well be seen as making fun of Scratchers. I can't think of any time when anyone was actually offended by the site, but it's certainly a plausible scenario. Perhaps shutting it down would be the best course of action to take here.
- Also, speaking of inclusion, I almost feel like it would be a good idea to completely remove the account request system and let anyone edit the Wiki. I can't even think of how many valuable contributors we would've lost over the years just because they didn't read S:CONTRIB. That's another issue though...
Hamish752 (talk | contribs) 23:01, 12 July 2016 (UTC)- Opening the Wiki up to anyone would itself cause problems. Mainly, we wouldn't have accountability. The wiki would be open to vandals, spammers, and advertisers. That would not be good. I remember the original Scratch Wiki was very advertise-y, and less of a Wiki. Also, the ST is sensitive about athe content of the Wiki. It was hard enough getting WW approved as is.
- At the same time, I do agree making the Wiki more open would be nice. There are some people who want to contribute and make the Wiki better, but are rejected.
- Anywho, I feel this should be in it's own topic. Hamish752, would you like to make that? :)
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:18, 13 July 2016 (UTC)- I support the removal of the blog. When I first saw it, I felt uncomfortable, as it came dangerously close to naming and shaming, but since usernames were censored and it was endorsed/run by reputable members, I figured that it was acceptable, and didn't say anything. I wish I had.

I agree that the Tumblr should be shut down. However, to Hamish's point, I disagree with getting rid of the wiki request system. If we let just anyone be a contributor it would be chaos. While the Tumblr is making fun of certain requests, some of them are really that bad, and letting them on the Wiki would not be good. Alternatively, I think that we (EWs and admins) should be less rejecting and that being the end of it and more rejecting and helping a bit more on how to be accepted later on. :)

- Great to hear all of your thoughts! To St19galla and Hamish's points, I do wonder if now would be a time to think through the account application and acceptance process to see if we can increase the rate of acceptance. For instance, on Scratch, we usually find that Scratchers understand and follow guidelines when we make them short and clear (like the community guidelines)-- maybe we can work on the Scratch Wiki: Become a Contributers page. Anyway, maybe these are thoughts for another thread!
Scmb1 (talk | contribs) 17:31, 14 July 2016 (UTC)- I agree. Posting a poor thing someone created publicly and making fun of it is harmful. However, we can cool down the editing guidelines so users know what to do without getting slapped on.

Account Acceptance
Allow anyone to edit the Scratch Wiki would hurt it, not help it. On the Scratch forums, I witness users who are unable to follow the rules or write posts in a logical manner. On the main Scratch site, many users gossip and bicker, spreading drama about arguments and bullying. If anyone could edit the wiki, similar behavior would occur here, and article quality would severely decrease. For example, Scratchers might try to make articles about their own projects, or slander other users.
Chibi-Matoran (talk | contribs) 19:34, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Keep in mind that we only have the request notes as evidence on rejecting or accepting; we can't do an entire background check on someone. We can't remove the request system either. Making guidelines shorter will work in helping people read it, but most people aren't really clicking on the link to read the guidelines. It may not make a big difference.
- I agree with shutting it down (or if it really is desired, making it private. I know it took a while to build.)
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 01:15, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- The reason I see behind making people read the page carefully is to provide an initial test to join the Wiki. The most important part of the Wiki is following instructions, so the first test should be to make sure that users can follow the instructions. That's why we have the current S:CONTRIB system. I do not support making Wiki registration open, as that would open it to vandalism, and I also don't want to see a lot of junk accounts with people just posting links to their projects or anything like that. However, if people want to rethink the requirements we use on S:CONTRIB, I would be open to that and I think the other EWs and admins would be too. If anyone has any ideas about that, please post them.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:18, 15 July 2016 (UTC)- Maybe we could have more traps, like more, "Post ___ in your request notes" to see if they read the page thoroughly. And maybe be a bit more clear on what the request was rejected for.
Programmer1121 (talk | contribs) 23:08, 19 July 2016 (UTC)- 1. No support - already exists 2. Support 06:43, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
- In all honest the system is fine. We only want people who can help contribute positively to this community, which many scratchers are unable to do. Either we keep things the way they are or we add more requirements such "Point to three articles you would edit on your very first day" or something like that. I would also put consideration on an age requirement, although I know this probably won't receive a lot of support :P. We want people who can edit a wiki. Personally I have done much less than I would like on the wiki, but I've never really hurt its quality. If we make restrictions easier it's quality could easily go down by people who don't even know there doing it or how to fix it. People can reapply anyway :)
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 12:19, 21 July 2016 (UTC)- There's never a perfect balance everyone agrees on - it just isn't possible. Discussion is great, so please keep suggesting!
- I think we are already clear on how we reject our requests. Most commonly, the comment that people get very angry about because it is not clear is when they get "...because you have not read S:CONTRIB". Unfortunately, there are criteria listed on that page for what to include in your request and what is not; a lack of a lot of the criteria would indicate a lack of through reading of S:CONTRIB. As jvvg said, "[t]he most important part of the Wiki is following instructions".
- Frankly, I like the idea of removing verbose from the S:CONTRIB or anything not directly on the point; it may help a bit with user acceptance. But remember - acceptance is their part, not ours.
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 07:52, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- I think our current acceptance system is fine.. If someone doesn't take the time to fully read S:CONTRIB, how do we know they would take the time to proofread their edits (and other articles)? @Makethebrainhappy, I think the age requirement is a nice idea, but I know plenty of people that probably wouldn't meet that age requirement, but have much better grammar than some teenagers

I feel like part of the argument boils down to: Do we want more unprofessional content?
On one hand, rejected Scratchers have good ideas on content to add. A lot of the time, they don't. Do we want to accept the extra unprofessional content for the few good edits?
Yes, not fully reading S:CONTRIB is a good sign that they won't be taking the time to edit professionally.
Personally, I wish there was some place where we could store ideas we get from account requests on what to add to the wiki...
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 17:44, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- My thoughts -- I think that we should make the account process less hard and accept several more people. Don't have it THAT hard, but still make it rather hard. I pretty much agree with everything jvvg said, and don't think we should open it to everyone, but DO think we should make it a bit easier.
Another thing is the blog. It is pretty much decided it should be shut down. However I am against that.
Hey I do agree with scmb1. It is not very nice to make fun of Scratchers. I think that some things such as grammar, helping new scratchers, lowercase "I", little things like that shouldn't be kept. I think maybe just really funny and bad things (even just things submitted on purpose to make an appearance) should be kept. But edited to be nicer, and maybe ask the Scratcher before putting it on there. And be nicer with the hashtags. After doing this I think Scratchers would be just fine with appearing on there! I almost just want to make an account to post something funny LOL.
With all my thoughts
EDIT: Is the blog even registered on Scratch?

Protect template
Done
Since we have a {{delete}} template, should also have a protect template? Basically, you put it on a page where you think it needs protecting (or an archive if you want it protected) and you get to choose what type of protection you want (autoconfirmed, ewplus, sysop, etc.) When we see it, we will remove the template and protect the page for you. Just a random suggestion :P

- No support - you can just ask an admin to protect it 07:30, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
- You could just ask an admin to delete a page as well - so why do we have the delete template?
- I thought about this suggestion a bit and I think having it would require an admin to edit the target page - which usually isn't desired especially if it is under the user namespace.
