Fixing account request system, round 2
So after the chronic verification code problems we've been having, it's clear we need to fix the system. So, the options are as follows:
- Generate one based on request details (similar to the old one, but make it day-dependent instead of month-dependent so it changes more frequently)
- Try to fix the current random system - please note that I have never been able to replicate the problem, so I would have no way of knowing whether my fix works or not
So, is everyone ok with the first one?
Also, while I'm there again, does anybody have any suggestions for other stuff that needs fixing/improvement?

Any bot ideas?
My bot proposal, BlockerBot, was a flop but I couldn't think of any good ideas for my new bot proposal. Can you suggest some?
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 22:02, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
- Why ask for ideas? The point of bots is to fix problems that humans can't resolve easily. If there's not a great need for a bot, why try and make one anyway?

Scratchifier (talk | contribs) 01:13, 7 March 2015 (UTC)- We don't hate you at all! We value all contributions from all of our editors. It's just that were are reluctant to add new bots because they often consume a lot of resources and we prefer only to have them used for important tasks. Also, as Scratchifier said, bots are made to solve problems. If there isn't a problem, there's no need to come up with a solution.

Russian Scratch Wiki
Plesase, update Scratch Wiki InterWiki from http://scratch-wiki.besaba.com to http://scratch-ru.info — Dmith (talk | contribs) 07:44, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Congrats!
This Wiki has become extremely difficult to update. That means... We've done a good job! I come and go for account requests and all but in general the Wiki can be considered up to date, clean, and informative, so I don't edit many articles anymore.
Turkey3 (talk | contribs) 00:52, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed. When I joined, I was like...Hmm...What can I do here...???
Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 13:15, 10 March 2015 (UTC)- great work everyone
Powercon5 (talk | contribs) 22:26, 10 March 2015 (UTC)- Curious. How long has it taken?
Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 22:34, 10 March 2015 (UTC)- Around two years, from guessing alone?
- Anyway, I have to agree with Turkey3. This Wiki is thorough enough that I've become inactive here, minus some account requests.

Great request notes from the last month (and a half)
Sorry for not posting this at the beginning of the month. Here they are, in all their glory:
it is fun
because is so good and you are more seriosly and more good
want to contribute
I Want To Make A Scratch Account Cant LogIn With scratch 1.4 account :) so i make a new
for fun
I will update old pages
i could help update old pages
Because i will make scratch a better place for kids and adults
Because without me scratch wont be really good i will add lots of stuff
Because i want to tell people more about scratch and others!
Because I want an account.
To help the SCRATCH Wiki grow of course!
Because i would like to help the scratch community.
to help other scratchers
I need help on my scratch project
so I can learn more about scratch
I want view more thing in this Wiki
because i love scratch and i would like to help with it
Because I always wanted to be a user in the wiki.
big fan of scratch
Because I want to help beginner Scratchers make awesome things.
Once again, I am profoundly disappointed by the amount of very poorly request notes I keep seeing (there are plenty more not on this list). People go through the trouble of finding all the pages to submit an account request, while many of them don't even indicate that they know what the Wiki is. Many people simply think that it's like the forums or just another community and don't realize it's actually a high-quality, high-standards documentation website. A bunch of people also seem to think it's simply a place to advertise their projects (S:NOSP.....). Yet, despite their lack of any information about what this is and lack of reading the page (it even says very clearly that their account request will be rejected if they didn't read the page), they submit a request anyway. Either they think we're bluffing and just accept every request or they just check every box without even reading what's in the box. To that end, it's worth pointing out that in this time period (~6 weeks), two requests had no request notes at all (i.e. blank).
That being said, these past few weeks, we've also gotten more good requests than usual, but still nowhere near as many as the quantity of bad requests.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:03, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- True... but I have to admit that some of those are hilarious. Such as "Because without me scratch wont be really good i will add lots of stuff" Uh huh. :P

Japanese Scratch Wiki
Hello! We're setting up a japanese Wiki right now. Could an Admin please enable interwiki? The japanese Wiki is here: http://jp.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/%E3%83%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%83%9A%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B8 . - LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 19:11, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- How many pages does the Japanese wiki have? How many users?
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 15:48, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
- Well, we're just getting started, nothing is really done yet. Actually it's not necessary to get interwiki already, but in the German, Indonesian and Russian Wiki, we are already connected with the Japanese wiki with interwiki, so I thought the English Wiki might want to join us. - LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 16:21, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Namespace problem
Hi, I'm an administrator on our Russian Scratch Wiki. And a few day ago I find out some problem: talk namespace has wrong name: try to open this page in Russian SW. Now try to open talk page from menu (Обсуждение button). So, look to URL: Обсуждение:Скретч Вики:Портал сообщества. But it must be Обсуждение Скретч Вики:Портал сообщества. Like Talk:Scratch Wiki:Community Portal.
What's happened with Russian SW, and how to solve this problem?
P.S.: Scratch Wiki admins, help me please! — Dmith (talk | contribs) 20:49, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
- That means in the russian (and german) wiki instead of "Scratch Wiki talk: Community Portal" it is "Talk:Scratch Wiki:Community Portal". (Maybe the community portal is a bad example because it's kind of a special page but it's the same with other articles - do you understand what we mean?) - LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 20:54, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Will people call me immature here?
On Animal Jam Wiki, I was hassled by many admins for being "immature" and was finally banned forever. So I never wanted to go or take anything from that wiki anymore.
So, here on this nice Scratch Wiki, I was free to say stuff in CAPS and talk about anything. But will anybody call me immature?
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 20:56, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Not me as long as it's appropriate stuff...
Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 00:38, 27 March 2015 (UTC)- You are welcome to talk in caps on talk pages (though on real articles, please write normally). Please don't use them excessively though, and italics are also a nice way to emphasize certain words. We don't judge you for it as long as you keep it on talk pages.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:55, 27 March 2015 (UTC)- Adding on to what jvvg and Amateurradiogeek said, I remember awhile ago we had a user who liked Capitalizing The Beginning Of Every Word. They Said It Was Easier To Type That Way. They were treated well, like any other Scratcher. Extending that idea, I'm sure you'll be fine writing in caps, if you're obviously not yelling or doing it on talk pages.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 00:27, 1 April 2015 (UTC)- Personally, I would actually prefer all CAPS versus trying to continually adjust to Something Like This The Whole Time I'm Reading....

Heads Up
I wanted to point out that the DACH Scratch Wiki is currently in the process of making a Japanese Scratch Wiki. You can view the wiki request here: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/post/863444/
Remember, it is not guaranteed the Japanese Wiki will be made, but I hope so.
ErnieParke (talk | contribs) 22:56, 1 April 2015 (UTC)
- This is awesome! We are spreading to more and more cultures. I think eventually it would be nice if all the Wiks were together and had a language bar somewhere on every page like the Scratch home site.

Something cool
Can anyone import this template I found on the DACH wiki to here?
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 22:17, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the <iframe> tag needs to be enabled, and enabling it would allow for users to inject other websites into the Wiki, which could actually potentially cause security threats.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 01:00, 3 April 2015 (UTC)- Is there a way to enable it only on http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/...

Our contribution to Scratch2015ams
Hello! So the DACH wiki is working on a contribution to the Scratch Conference in Amsterdam this year. We have made this article in our wiki that summarizes the content of our talk and poster: de:Scratch-Wiki:Scratch2015AMS. The page is in english, so everyone can understand it. One section of the article is "Thoughts by Wikians". It shall contain quotes from wikians to motivate others to either join or create a wiki. Until now it only contains one quote, by Rumanti. We would like to add more quotes. Therefore I am asking you, if anyone of you would like to share their thoughts on wikis or maybe even on international wikis. Thank you :) - LiFaytheGoblin (Talk) 13:42, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- hmm... Wikis are great because they allow different people with different views to edit the wiki. This, in turn, allows a full scope of information to one wiki page, and that is what makes a Wiki special.

Scratch Wiki 2015 Easter Egg Hunt
I'm suggesting that idea because it will relate to Easter and it will be FUN!!! In this event, people have to search for 10 Easter eggs hidden among 1,493 articles. Clicking them will link to a surprise.
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 22:45, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- we could - it would be fun!
- but it would only be for wiki members, and not for anyone else :( idk if that is a prob. or not.

Base template
We could combine the formats of {{Note}}, {{Caution}}, and {{Warning}} into a single meta-template called something like {{Notebase}}.
For example
{{Notebase|file = File:Bananas.png|title = Yoda|text = This is some useless text}}
gives:
Yoda: This is some useless text.
If the file isn't specified it gives an error.
Error: Parameter {{{file}}} not specified or improperly formatted
If the file is specified but the title isn't specified, it gives an error.
Error: Parameter {{{title}}} not specified or improperly formatted
If the file and title, but not the text, is specified, it gives no text.
What do you think?
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 23:48, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm, great proposition! What uses would it contribute to the wiki? :)
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 01:13, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
It may make the templates more compact and easier to edit.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 02:44, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- hmm, but what if we really need to create {{note}}? in that case, with your template we would have to find the image, the text, etc i'd wait until others reply!
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 23:20, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
T2
Okay, I've created a new template, {{T2}}. It allows you to specify a template and up to five parameters. Unlike {{T}}, however, they can represent anything that is plugged in. For example,
I just need to create a doc. In fact, I made this for documentations and the like.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 02:59, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- so a difference between {{outdent|<outdent>}} and Template:T2?
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 04:46, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
More realistic in the edit thing.
3sal2 (talk | contribs) 20:19, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- i actually like the old one better. we can just use nowiki tags for this.

Question.
Is it possible to be banned on the main website but not on the wiki?
I'm serious.
The ST hates me.
I might have exposed a security hole...
...They're probably plotting to ban me as we speak.
TheHockeyist (talk | contribs) 23:09, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, if you are banned on the main site, you will not be banned on the Wiki unless the behavior carries over or you cause excessive drama about it. If you are banned on the main site, please do not talk about it here and you will still be allowed to edit. However, if you seriously think the ST is out to get you, it's worth considering that Scratch may not be for you. If you did find a security hole (I found several back when I was an active main site user, like this one), you should report it to the Scratch Team immediately. Also, they don't "plot" to ban people. They discuss whether it is necessary or not. They consider both the user's positive contributions, history of bad behavior (or lack thereof), and the most recent actions. Not everybody believes this, but the Scratch Team really doesn't like to ban people. It's not fun for anyone, can cause undue stress on the bannee (if that's a word), and the Scratch Team knows they always have to deal with the appeals process.

In other languages
Is it just me, or the little box saying "In other languages" isn't in every page of the Wiki? I believe this doesn't really make much sense, as nevertheless of the page you are in the Scratch Wiki you may want to switch the language to one you understand. So far, I think only the home page of this Wiki has this box, which doesn't seem about right in my opinion. So what do you think?
Tcodina (talk | contribs) 16:46, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
- That box only shows for pages that have a version of that page available on a Wiki in another language.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:54, 7 April 2015 (UTC)- Hmm, I noticed, but maybe people do not understand English at all and would like to go to the Scratch Wiki in their language instead, even if the page they are at cannot be translated to their language? That's what I think, anyway, maybe it would be more obvious for the user. Although, that's how most Wikis work, so I guess it's okay.

New Tumbleblog for bad request notes?
Tumblr seems like the best place for this stuff; there are several blogs that are just repostings of rejected things or other short, copy-paste posts (bad kids jokes, bad Wikipedia writing, etc.). There are several ways we could go about doing this:
- I post all notes that I find funny (or just all instantly-rejected notes, period)
- You guys can set up Tumblr accounts and I can add you to the blog
- We can make a bot do it (would be really cool but it might require the creation of a new option to handle requests, "Reject and Mark as Hilarious")
I'll start with the first option, and start [1]. If anyone objects to the idea, I can stop.
Warning: | All content on the above linked blog is Scratch-appropriate (ATM), but not absolutely all Tumblr content is Scratch-appropriate. No lateral movements. I cannot take responsibility for Scratch users viewing content on Tumblr, including that on my main blog. |

- Another funny thing I notice sometimes is users' replies to my standard immediate rejection message ("Your Scratch Wiki account request was rejected because you did not read http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/S:CONTRIB before submitting your request."). One user wrote the following:
“ | I would like to join this because I can write stuff about myself and people won't tell me that this is the wrong info. | ” |
– The request notes |
“ | Ok I understand. And in fact I did read it. | ” |
– The reply to my comment |
- It appears as if people think I can't tell that they aren't following the guidelines in that page. It's also not as if the guidelines are obscure. It says everything in no uncertain language.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 00:53, 16 April 2015 (UTC) - Unfortunately, to add people, I'll have to get your email addresses again. Just send fan mail on tumblr to mathfreak231. A few things to address before I add people:
- Copy and paste the entire request notes box. No more, no less.
- Don't add a title.
- Make witty remarks in the tags section! See what I've done for examples. You can mirror your reject notes.
- Generally speaking, when you're about to post, click on the dropdown next to "Post" and select "Add to queue". This staggers posts and is especially helpful when you have multiple to add at once.
- Only add the instant rejects, and don't post blank ones.
- Have fun!
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 23:12, 16 April 2015 (UTC)- Honestly I don't think this blog, nor posting rejected request notes, is really appropriate... it seems to be making fun of people who misunderstand the page, or perhaps are younger and find the page difficult to understand. Plus people likely write the notes only expecting the admins will read them, and probably wouldn't want them shown to a larger audience—I know I wouldn't've wanted any more people reading mine. Although I know I'm not really active in this community anymore, those are just my two cents.
veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)- You raise a valid point, veggie. I just started it because Tumblr was the most convenient thing on earth for this and because we've already been doing it in the past.
Mathfreak231 (talk | contribs) 22:43, 20 April 2015 (UTC)- good point. a compilation is good, but not with the tags?

- Add to the checkbox "I understand that if my request notes are ridiculously bad (if you tried they probably aren't) they may be publicly posted as wiki humor"? Might encourage more users to try harder :P

A documentation on Scratch APIs
Inspired by Firedrake969's awesome topic that compiles the Scratch APIs found and several posts on the Advanced Topics stating that "the Scratch Wiki doesn't have a good documentation of the APIs", I have been compiling some special URLs found by the 1337/swag/nice users from the Advanced Topics and also by me. It's on my sandbox. I'm wondering if it's OK to turn this documentation into a Scratch Wiki article.. Opinions? In my opinion, it would be very useful, the ATers would feel honored, and some of these could be workarounds for some Scratch suggestions!
Rumanti (talk | contribs) 13:54, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- That sounds like a wonderful idea for an article. I say go ahead!
veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:14, 20 April 2015 (UTC)- Awesome! It's here: Scratch APIs. It needs a category, but I don't know what category it belongs to ^^". If anyone's confident on what category it belongs to, please categorize it.

We got a suggestion

PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 20:50, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
- this is a great suggestion (and one that should be of high priority). I will tell you what I think about this problem later!
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 15:58, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- I suggested adding the rename user feature a while back, but people didn't seem too enthusiastic about it.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:08, 21 April 2015 (UTC)- hm,, how would we know that someone deleted their accounts?
- KrIsMa user | talk | contribs | edits 21:47, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- We would know because the Wiki account they currently have doesn't have an equivalent page on the Scratch website.
- @PrincessPandaLover: Support. I think this would be a nice feature to have.

How do you create a bot?
First off, how do you create a bot? What programming languages knowledge are required? What levels (medium, advanced etc)? I'm thinking that the Indonesian Scratch Wiki may need bots at some point soon, not now, and it would be nice to learn first for some time, before we actually need it. Also, I knew some Python (2.8, not 3) and JavaScript, is that going to be helpful?
Rumanti (talk | contribs) 14:08, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
- That has programming languages you can use
PrincessPandaLover (talk | contribs) 14:26, 26 April 2015 (UTC)- I have read that. But I need more information, like levels of experience or a special library or something.
Rumanti (talk | contribs) 14:36, 26 April 2015 (UTC)- You just need something with basic HTTP libraries and either XML or JSON parsing capabilities.

Verification code troubles again
The Scratch Team changed the format of the comments API on me recently, and as a result the verification code system broke. After tweaking the regex pattern, I have fixed it, but until the fix is implemented, we won't have any account requests. If anyone asks you about it, just say to wait until it's fixed, which hopefully will be soon.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 14:20, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
- Alrighty! Good to know as I've been talking to someone who's thinking about it. Just let us know when it's fixed!
Amateurradiogeek15 (talk | contribs) 18:33, 26 April 2015 (UTC)- Hopefully, they will accept my patch quickly. However, it is nearing final exam season in college and scmb1 might not be checking her messages as frequently, so it might take longer.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 22:32, 26 April 2015 (UTC)- Yikes. Maybe let another ST member know on the main website so that they can contact scmb1 more directly?
The_Grits (talk | contribs) 12:10, 27 April 2015 (UTC)- Dumb question, but why does it have to be scmb1? Why not another member of the ST...?

Yah, perhaps...I guess only jvvg knows! Maybe he'll decide to tell us.
