News

You need to change it to "was made available", because it already happened.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 09:53, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hmm... I don't think that's necessary. It is still available to everyone right now, so it's still valid. And even after it's not valid anymore (after May 21), we probably wouldn't change it since it's a piece of news, not a normal fact in an article that has to be true all of the time. Maybe something like "has been made available"? I'm not sure if that really makes a difference though. :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:27, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

SVG

Being that the costumes library in 2.0 is vector, we should be able to export them and add them to the wiki as SVG images. Please, JSO?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:28, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I brought this up here once and to Lucario again too! I support.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:37, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the wiki needs this.
Bsteward (talk | contribs)20:32, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Organisation on the wiki with the release of 2.0

With the alpha release, what's happened on the wiki is sort of just a jumble of information that people add to articles (of course they are good edits though), and this is, I feel, is a rather disorganized way of dealing with things. There will be an extremely high frequency of edits following the release, and we'll have to go through pages trying to figure out which information has been added and which hasn't, and things will get missed out or maybe put twice in an article in different places or whatever. Perhaps we should have something a bit like a project page on Wikipedia, where we can have a list of tasks and articles that need to be updated with information about the release, so that it all runs smoothly and we get all the information on the wiki as quickly as possible. Sorry this has been a bit of a wall of text, but I'd like to see what other people feel about this idea. Thanks :)
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 18:19, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

I think a project page with tasks is a great idea! I'm always looking for something to add on the wiki.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 00:47, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
That seems like a cool idea. Though it will be hard to create a project page with all the Scratch 2.0 pages.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 01:05, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
There was some sort of task thing on the previous wiki where you could add to a list of things that needed doing... would be cool to see that back again :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:47, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
I think some organization would be needed, and this seems okay ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:54, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't see why not. :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:51, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
We do have the page Scratch Wiki:Todo, however we haven't really put much use to it. :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
I never knew we had that. Lets put it to use!
Bsteward (talk | contribs)21:29, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Curator

The new curator is Legolas_Greenleaf, starting today.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 08:51, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

I'll update the news once Legolas_Greenleaf appears as the curator on the front page. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:02, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
The new curator, technoboy10, will start tomorrow.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:45, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
The news segment on me becoming a curator has the wrong date, as I became curator on the 4th. Can an admin please change that?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 12:31, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Done.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:19, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
^^ Thanks, Sci!
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 17:34, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

File update problems.

BYOB Recursion.png

I want to update this, but my updated image just shows the old one, except smashed into the size of the new one which looks worse. Can anyone revert it properly? (It's the one where Tree is a pen block).
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:58, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Clear your cache.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:04, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Didn't need to—Safari crashed because of a JS thingamajig I was running in the background. Thanks!
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:05, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
In other words, it cleared on its own.
veggie will totally redo the image though.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:06, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Ugh then I have to download BYOB again grr maybe
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:14, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, i was just expecting you to. No requirements. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:50, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Wow, this is an unusual situation. I tried reverting to a previous revision - that didn't work. I tried uploading the correct version of the image - that didn't work. So I don't think redoing an image and re-uploading will help. Maybe just delete the image file and create a new one, like File:BYOB_Recursion2.png?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:01, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmm... It appears correctly in my browsers (iOS Safari, Google Chrome).
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 21:44, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Luc, you just need to clear your cache.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:46, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Silly me :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:23, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

http://learnscratch.org/

We need an article on it.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 16:13, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Cool. Why don't you do it?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:48, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't know too much about it.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 17:53, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

How to use CSS?

I think we had a discussion about this before, but I'm not sure where. Is it allowed for us to use custom CSS on our page. If so what am I doing wrong? All the text on my page should be green. User:Dazman/Scratch.css
Dazman (talk | contribs) 02:50, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

One, if it were enabled, all the text on all pages for you would be green. Two, it's not enabled and apparently it's pointless so nope. Use Stylish or another browser extension if you want to customise the skin.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:32, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Why isnt it enabled? Its not a harmful feature
Dazman (talk | contribs) 03:33, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't contribute anything to the wiki or something. I dunno, JSO and Luc don't want it so it doesn't happen.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:57, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
It contributes to the editors though
Dazman (talk | contribs) 04:01, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Not really; it's just personal customisation that can easily be done with browser plugins.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 04:02, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I wrote a quick JS plugin to automatically add inline styles based on a CSS, if you want I could fish it out.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 05:14, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

More categories

I think we need this category for pages like recursion, OOP, Morphic, Array etc. Also, a 3D category for raytracing and all the other 3D pages.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 14:30, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Make them then. :)

Scratch 2.0 Advertising Wiki

Where and how will they advertise the wiki on Scratch 2.0.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 11:13, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Not sure exactly. It should be on one of the help pages in the dropdown. (Before they messed up the site to open it, the help tab was a dropdown, and one had a "link" to the wiki.)
It will probably appear elsewhere too.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:02, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
It would be nice if it could be more prominent than it is now, it doesn't seem very noticeable at the moment.
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 17:00, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

BYOB in Scratch 0.2

http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Scratch_Versions#Scratch_0.2 Check this out. Did the Scratch 0.2 really have a BYOB feature.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 21:05, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Uh, yep.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 22:03, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Block Template Parameters

I was looking at Block, and I'm not sure if all of the parameters are ncessary. For example, there is one called "Type of Argument". However, as shown by Special:WhatLinksHere/Argument, very few pages use that parameter. After all, you can tell what kind of arguments a block takes by simply looking at the shape of its inputs (e.g. rectangle is a textbox, hexagon is a boolean block). Do you think we should remove it?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 19:44, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Yeah. I think there are much better options for utilizing that space, like a link to the Squeak code/Squeak selector.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:02, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
I guess it does seem rather unnecessary.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:31, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

I never thought i would say this...

What if we switched to using sentence case for titles? It makes it much easier to add links, so like, instead of doing cloud data we can just do cloud data. Of course, this means moving 1,493 pages, many over redirect, and leaving redirects so old links from elsewhere don't break. This is a big huge change, so it needs serious discussion.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:04, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

No. Wikipedia capitalized everything, who are we to doubt thier methods? Besides, it's still a problem if you need to use the word in the beginning of the sentence. I think it makes more sense to just let a couple of caps errors slide, like "A cool new feature in Scratch 2.0 is Cloud Data".
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 09:51, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
No, the first letter of titles is always autocapitalized, which is why that link would work. So "Cloud data is a cool new feature of Scratch 2.0" OR "A cool new feature in Scratch 2.0 is cloud data" would work with the new method, but not the old.
And Wikipedia does use sentence case. For example, Greek legislative election rather than Greek Legislative Election, June 2012.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:58, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I'd love that, especially for the really long titles
veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:44, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I'd prefer a bit of extra typing to making the wiki look unprofessional. Perhaps a way to make links not case sensitive?
MoreGamesNow (talk | contribs)
Although it would be involve a lot of work, I think it's a change worth doing. Some titles just don't really look right to me, and I think this would fix most of the problems. Obviously not all titles would have to change, but quite a number of them. However because of the size of the change, if we were to do it, I think we would have to do it in an organized manner, and wait for after all of the Scratch 2.0 buzz slows down a bit (maybe in June). But there's definitely planning involved with something like this.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:57, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Hear hear!
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 22:58, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Would section names in articles be changed too? Personally I like sentence case in section names :P
And yeah, I support ^^'
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:58, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
I guess so.
@Luc: I kinda thought that if we were doing it, it would be better before too many 2.0 articles get created. :P Though recent changes would probably get way too messy if we did it now.
Should new articles follow this though?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:53, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Should they?
Would the week of June 3rd be good to do it? That's next week. I think i'll start creating a page for this project.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:05, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
For now, we're not going to making any significant changes to the wiki like this until I discuss it with JSO and/or other members of the Scratch community.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:52, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
What about BYOB. That kind of can not be Sentence case. I guess we will have to think this through a bit. Also, what about the Community Portal, should it be Community Portal, or Community portal. Or the Main Page, would that be Main Page, or Main page. Same with Recent Changes, Current Events and Random Page.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 17:17, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
An acronym will stay capitalized. What Wikipedia does is Main Page and Community portal. As for items in the sidebar, we could certainly lowercase them easily enough.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:24, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Can we volunteer for more than one letter of the alphabet?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 17:33, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes. And doing all the Ss is a lot of work. You sure you want to?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:47, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes. I'm really bored of not found anything worthwhile on the wiki. :P So do I start now?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 18:47, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Don't start; we aren't for sure doing this. Read Lucario's post and wait for JSO to comment.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 18:52, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Ok. *looks for files to categorize*
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 19:00, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
We need someone to confirm that we can start the move.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 00:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Just waiting for JSO.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:26, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Oh, wait. What about mods. What would that look like. Like this: Panther (Scratch modification), or like this: Panther (scratch modification)
Joletole (talk | contribs) 01:43, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Scratch is a proper noun, and is therefore capitalized.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 02:32, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
We certainly can't just go ahead and do this. I currently don't have the chance to write a proper reply, but I'll write something up this weekend.
JSO (talk | contribs) 20:29, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Any minute JSO...
Joletole (talk | contribs) 22:14, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi everyone,
I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but I really think this is a change we should not put our efforts and time in. I think the titles look just fine as they are, but most importantly I think it's not worth either breaking every single link ever created to the wiki or messing up the wiki by creating hundreds of redirects.
I'm really happy you're all interested in spending a lot of time on the wiki, but there are many other things that we can work on that are actually more important and deserve our attention more than (relatively) small details. For example, we should work on
 • making a reliable FAQ on the wiki (see below)
 • improving the writing style of all articles so that the same message is condensed into simpler, clearer, more understandable language (remember we're dealing with an international community)
 • Greatly improving our range of tutorials on all subjects
 • Add a clear getting started tutorial
 • ...
Remembering title case when writing links is rather annoying. Would you be interested in some sort of extension that would make links to articles case insensitive? If so, please let me know and I'll try to find/work on something.
I really appreciate all the effort is being put into the wiki to make it a very reliable and understandable help source, and it really doesn't matter too much if some discontinuities appear along the way :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 20:46, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
I suppose it was worth the wait... :P
I would be interested in a link-case-insesnsitiveifier extension. Though honestly it will save me less than five seconds for that extra pipe+text, and I personally don't think it's worth the trouble.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 02:08, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the post, JSO.
I would also like an extension like that; it could be useful to other wikis too, so you could put up on MediaWikiWiki:Extension.
What kind of getting started tutorial were you thinking of? About Scratch itself, or the wiki? And i would also like more tutorials here, i just can't think of stuff to write.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:46, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

How do you make a header?

Like on Veggie's page, or the Community Portal, how do you make a blue header. I don't have any archives.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 21:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

My page has a blue header?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:59, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I know.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 22:26, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Try checking the source.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:36, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
I was asking you whether it did, because I can't see one.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 13:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh, whoops, I meant Scimonster. @Sci, yeah, but what do I get rid of for no archives.
Joletole (talk | contribs) 13:33, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Lorem ipsum dolores sit amet...

How do you like it?

Should work...

^^ replace "stuff here..." with your text.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 13:41, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Why is there a talk page for the search bar?

James07 (talk | contribs) 21:03, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure about the exact details, but I believe it's a technical feature of the wiki that was added so we could have the custom search added to the wiki (previously we used Special:Search). :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:32, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Template:Bug

I like this template, but I'm wondering if there's any improvements we might be able to make to it. Instead of just having a "Bug:" section, we could perhaps have a "Title:" and "Description:" section? I think it's worth considering these changes now rather than later when we end up using this template on other articles. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 01:14, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't see why not :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:08, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Sure, I'll work on it. :)

Update to Main Site FAQ Re: Scratch on tablets

Thought you guys would like to know. Let me know if you have questions. http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Support/Scratch_FAQ#Future
Lightnin (talk | contribs) 14:24, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Awesome, thanks for the info! Will the iPad app allow sharing to the website?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 15:44, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Also, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and Scratch works fine. Why does the page only list 10.04 as the highest supported version?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 15:50, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
That is awesome.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:39, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
That's so cool. Now we need a Scratch on Tablets page, with info on this, Go Everywhere!, the HTML Viewer (and JsScratch)... :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:05, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Don't forget sb2.js!
Blob8108 (talk | contribs) 19:07, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Not sure if iPad App will allow sharing (too soon to tell), but I would think it's likely. re: Ubuntu support on FAQ - nice catch! Fixed.
Lightnin (talk | contribs) 17:55, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! And yay, iPad app!
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 18:05, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

So I created a template...

Called , and I was wondering if it would be OK to use it on an article. Here's what it looks like:

DocumentInQuestion.png This article or section is under debate if it is appropriate to the Scratch Community. Please discuss it on this page's talk page.

I made it a subpage in case it isnt allowed. (@Admins- I accidentally created a template called Appropriate before I remembered to subpage it, could you delete that?)

I created it particularily for Creating a Screamer, but it could be used for other things.

(I changed the design, now it looks evil o_O)
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 22:14, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Interesting template! Although I doubt it would be very common, I think it does have potential uses, as you mentioned. I think it's okay to create the template! But perhaps we should name it Template:Inappropriate instead? Also, be sure to add the following to the template:
<includeonly></includeonly>
Once you create Category:Inappropriate Articles, we will be able to easily track what articles have the template on it. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:39, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Ok! Thanks!
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 22:44, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
YEEESSSSSSSSSS! I DID IT! THE CATEGORY/TEMPLATE IS COMPLETE!!
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 22:52, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
It's so beautiful! *sniffle*
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 22:58, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
:) Nice work! It is quite lovely. I hope people won't be inspired to post inappropriate things just to use the template. :P
Lightnin (talk | contribs) 15:00, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! And no, I think we can trust the wiki editors like myself enough to not post inappropriate things. Oh, BTW, did you know you can make smileys in your posts by doing :
Smile to make :)
Sad to make :(
Grin to make :D
Wink to make ;)
Tease to make :P
Hmm to make :/

Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 17:36, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Nice! The only suggestion I would have is to make it a little lighter red or to change the text colour so it's a bit easier to read. :)
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 17:47, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
The actual template is the same color as NotUseful, that was my draft. However, I might make it darker with a bit lighter text so it is easily distinguishable.
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 17:49, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Ah, cool. I like the current colours it has. :)
