How do I make a section like the one below?

Applejack (talk | contribs) 16:58, 2 April 2012 (UTC) Please help! I don't know how to make one, and there must be some easier way to do this than sneaking into the code to make comments. Also, my username is wrong. It should be all lower-case applejack, not Applejack (I suspect Jonathanpb for this). Please help me! D:

Applejack (talk | contribs) 17:04, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Applejack
Oh, I thought it wouldn't get it's own [edit] link. Am I supposed to
sign at the very bottom?

Applejack (talk | contribs) 17:04, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Applejack

Yeah, sign at the bottom. And unfortunately MediaWiki autocapitalises; my username's the same way
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 17:36, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh, thanks! :
Applejack (talk | contribs) 19:43, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Applejack

Account approval's been broken for almost three months

Personally I feel like the wiki's kinda dying; we haven't gotten any new contributors for ages :S

Is there any chance of account approval being fixed soon?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:40, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

I wish we could just do it without the system. :/
And yeah; JSO's been working, (scratchblocks anyone? :P) but not on this.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:59, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I really wish we were allowed to do it without that (and I wish I was allowed to do it, period :P), but I don't think that'll happen :/
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 15:22, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Actually, if we could do it without the system, you would have the permissions.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:03, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I know that. I can create accounts now, but I wouldn't dare.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:29, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
I wish there was a way I could fix it, but I don't think there is. Whenever I talk to JSO I try to bring this up but he always seems to have other things to do.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:16, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
:S
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 05:42, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry folks - it's back up. I should have done it way earlier. The problem is that I was a bit unmotivated to fix it: it had to be taken down because of serious security issues with the way I was communicating with the ScratchR API, (as in everyone could just login with any username) and I didn't like fixing it knowing the ScratchR API as it is now will probably disappear with Scratch 2.0 coming up. Whatever, it should be fixed and faster now :)

Squeak Tutorial

I gave Squeak Tutorial a major overhaul. Anybody wanna check it out and give feedback?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:44, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Nicely done :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 03:53, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Looks great!
Wolvesstar97 (talk | contribs) 01:46, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I learned a some squeak, and I want to put up a tutorial. Anybody know how?
ProjectMakerMusic (talk | contribs) 9:42, 28 March, 2012 (UTC)

You could add to the existing Squeak tutorial with your new information. Or, if it relates to a certain feature, like blockmaking does, it could get its own article. :)
@everyone: Will we start having Actionscript tutorials when 2.0 comes out?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:46, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Ok Thanks!
ProjectMakerMusic (talk | contribs) 9:57, 28 March, 2012 (UTC)

Technical question

How does the Wiki tell us if an article exists? Is there an API? For example, hfsalkughsfukbvzf is red because it doesn't exist, but Scratch Forums is Blue because it exists.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 16:33, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure about the technical details, but it's all from the MediaWiki system. I would look here for more information.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 17:06, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Probably checking if a column in a database has a name.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:30, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
No luck... you think JSO would know?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 09:32, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
I solved it!
[1]. <page title="HFSALKUGHSFUKBVZF" /> has the missing attribute because it's missing. You could also get the JSON representation by changing xml to json.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:37, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Woah, you rock!
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 13:55, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, the power of Google. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:06, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Wow, cool! Didn't know that! It's not the way it does it internally I believe, it just checks the database. But it's really cool mediawiki gives every wiki their own API for external communication!
JSO (talk | contribs) 23:37, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Silly question

What does the m or N before an edit under "Recent Changes" signify?

PS Is it just me or am I asking a lot of questions these days? :P
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 09:11, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

m is a minor edit; N is a new page.
Well, maybe you are, but you're still getting used to wiki editing, so it's normal.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:27, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with asking questions, it's better than not asking and not knowing :3
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:12, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok, then, another one: what does :3 mean? :P
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 09:11, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
It's some weird smiley face that I still don't really understand :P
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:00, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
It's hard to put it into text XD Uuuum something like "Hehehe", ":)", and ":D" put together :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:07, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh okay. This reminds me of the time when one of my friends first used it when chatting with me and I though it was like kissing lips, which was especially confusing 'coz she's a lesbian, and th — oh wait this isn't the forums lol ok I'll shut up now
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 04:12, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Account approval

Hey folks,

sorry it took so long, but the account request and approval system is back online. And it's a lot more secure and faster now.

Let the Scratchers know on the forums ;)

Need an article

Hey, I was searching around the wiki and I found out that there is no article about this topic.
Joletole (talk | contribs)

Err, I'm not too sure we need an article on that thread. If you think it would help, you can always create it yourself and another Wiki member can delete it if it's unnecessary. Also, when you need to comment on the community portal, you need to click the "Comment" button on the navigation bar; not delete the whole page. Finally, sign your posts with 4 tildes (~). Woah, it feels great to be telling someone else this rather than having Scimonster correct me every few edits... :P
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 14:55, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't think we really need one. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:10, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Since we generally have a policy against having articles on projects/galleries/forum threads, I don't think we can have an individual article about it. However if you think it is significant enough, there could be a section about it in the Show and Tell forum.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:18, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
It is in the show and tell forum. :P
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 06:47, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Something Weird is Going On

When I click the [+] next to the logout thing, there is this new section. The sandbox.

In my sandbox, I made a suggestion for this. So I thought the wiki team put that there thinking that my suggestion was a good idea.

But when I clicked on it, it brought me to this user named Undefined. Does anybody know what this is?
Joletole (talk | contribs) 21:29, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't see this... could you post a screenshot?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:12, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
It's with my userscript.
Are you using Chrome? It only works with Firefox AFAIK.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:31, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, okay, firefox works.
joletole (talk | contribs)

Wiki is slow...

I'm finding page loading quite slow. :/ My internet speed is fine, as other sites load in a [BYOB4].
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:23, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

It went really slow for me when I momentarily installed your userscript... perhaps that has something to do with it?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:41, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Not sure...
Now it's back to normal.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:08, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure is slow for me right now... I'm gonna edit later, it took me literally 3 minutes and 15 seconds to load the recent changes and another 1.5 to get t o this page. I'm dreading the edit...
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 16:02, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I haven't had any issues besides when I installed the userscript.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 19:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I haven't noticed anything myself, but the wiki might be slower because of more people online editing (as we recently brought the account request system back). Probably nothing major though. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:39, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
I thought that might be it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:45, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
The wiki is indeed loading very slowly at times. I doesn't necessarily have anythin to do with userscripts :P
JSO (talk | contribs) 08:57, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Collaboration Articles

I'm in a (defunct) collab and I'm wondering if I can make an article on it.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 21:30, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Yep, articles on collaborations are allowed. It's preferred that they had at least one project released though.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:36, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Yep, we had a couple released.

Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 21:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Go for it then. And you can just put the four tildes on the same line as what you're saying. ;)
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:40, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. :)
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 22:16, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Upload Failed: incorrect extension

I tried to upload an image (.gif file, name was all numbers) and it told me that it had an incorrect extension.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 00:04, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

How did you create the gif file?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 00:14, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
I got it from a gallery pic on the Scratch site.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 00:16, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
What's the link? Sometimes they have MIME types messed up.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 00:33, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Erm... IDK, I just saved the image directly. It was the gallery image for the M82 Software gallery.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 00:41, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
This?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 00:44, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Yep. Can you use images from URLs on the wiki?
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 00:47, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
It is possible to occasionally, but not for general use. There's nothing wrong with uploading a file here.
The reason it failed was because it's a PNG, not GIF.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 00:51, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for putting that in the page, Sci! You rock.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 01:19, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. :) It was no problem.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 01:28, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Collabs

Are we supposed to have articles on individual collabs/companies?
Schusteralex2 (talk | contribs) 01:22, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Articles on collabs/companies are allowed, yes.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:25, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

April Fool's Day

Does the wiki do anything for April Fool's Day? It might be fun.
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 04:10, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

We didn't do anything last year.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:22, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
It would be really fun if they did do something!
Joletole (talk | contribs) 10:58, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
How about we replace all links to "Scratch" with a link to Wikipedia:April Fool's Day?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:16, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Maybe we could have all instances of blocks or projects link to the Wikipedia article on ponies. Or maybe MLP:FiM. XD (Sorry, I'm asking a lot of questions)
Technoboy10 (talk | contribs) 13:27, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Unused Files

I noticed that there are some unused images/files on this wiki. Nothing links to them, & they are in question of their usefulness. Should they be removed?
Sku2000 (talk | contribs) 00:47, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Quite a bit of them have issues with being deleted, unfortunately. :/
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:06, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh well. At this point, it'd be best just to let them die.
Sku2000 (talk | contribs) 01:30, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
What do you mean, "let them die"? They just won't delete. Server writing problems.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:15, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
By let them die, I mean leave them there, unused, unwanted. I don't mean delete it.
Sku2000 (talk | contribs) 19:32, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

[wiki=Scratch] (suggestion)

Hi Wikians! I recently came up with the idea of a BBCode tag which links to the Wiki. Here's how it would work:

[wiki]Scratch[/wiki] => Wiki syntax [[Scratch]]
[wiki=Scratch]a program[/wiki] => Wiki syntax [[Scratch|a program]]

It would work like the url tags.

I figured I should tell you here on the Community Portal because I'd get more support from the Wiki editors. So please check it out, and vote here. Thanks!
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 05:38, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Not a bad idea, but I don't really see much purpose for it. It's simply a link, and the only thing that's different is where it goes to (the Scratch Wiki). Rather than adding new type of media (such as images, links, YouTube players, or Scratch players), it just saves you some time so you don't have to type http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/. Arguably having a [project=xxxxxxx] link would be just as useful.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:32, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

April Fools Day changes

I've noticed that some admins have changed the main page of the Scratch Wiki to match up with the main website. As it is Aprils Fools' Day and all of this is in good fun, I'm OK with these changes, but I would prefer that you discuss these changes on the Community Portal first. The edit summaries by Scimonster, "I can be funny too." and "Ponies are taking over.", as well as by Veggieman001 "xD im so funny" don't justify the changes whatsoever. At least posting on the Community Portal and getting one other administrator's approval would be preferred. Nothing bad is gonna happen, but I just want the admins to keep this in mind for future reference. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:52, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Alright, sorry 'bout that. Glad that you recognise that it's all in good fun and I'll make sure to check in here in the future. Cheers. :)
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:55, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Alright! April Fools Day is now over on the rest of the sight! Let's be done with the wiki pranks until next year! ;)
Sku2000 (talk | contribs) 03:05, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
All back to normal! :)
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 03:28, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
OK sure. Did you notice it said "Neigh Wiki"? :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:59, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Uploading user icons

I notice a lot of users are uploading their icons to use on their pages. There's no need for this! JSO implemented something that, when the code http://scratch.mit.edu/STUFF.png is typed, it turns into an image! So instead of uploading your files, just link. :) Just something I'm pointing out; it's not mandatory. It does save us server space though.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:18, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Good point Scimonster! Just trying it out, I can get a small icon from the front page by typing http://scratch.mit.edu/img/sday11.png:
http://scratch.mit.edu/img/sday11.png
However if the image doesn't line up as wanted or you want to add a caption, uploading the image may be necessary (which is OK).
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:06, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Yep. It can be floated with <div align="center/right">http://scratch.mit.edu/STUFF.png</div> though.
And I uploaded mine so that I could enlarge it; make it the whole width.
