Block Articles and Block Plugin

From experience, I know that it's easy to make mistakes with the block plugin when you don't have much experience using it. My idea is that perhaps on every block article, we should have a section on the syntax of that individual block. Some would be very simple, but some would be longer. After all, if I didn't know how to type a block with the block plugin, the article about the block would probably be one of the first places I check. What do you think?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 04:38, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

You're in luck, I already added pluginsyntax to {{Block}}. :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:50, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. That's not a bad idea, but I think that the small space isn't enough to necessarily big enough to put a whole line of the syntax. After all, many blocks have unique exceptions and rules.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:02, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
I mean like this:
{{Block
|name=When Green Flag clicked
|image=whatever
|type=hat
|category=Control
|added=0.1
|pluginsyntax=when gf clicked
}}
Sandbox it if you want.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 20:08, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
I see what you mean (I sandboxed it with just showing preview), and it works, but it could look pretty ugly when it comes to longer blocks. For example "broadcast [text v] and wait" takes up two lines (which I don't like). I'm still not sure though.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:17, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
So perhaps have it in an automatically overflowing SPAN or PRE?
BTW, why do you sometimes do fewer indents than the person in front of you, when it's not really needed?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:41, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I figured since we're just replying back and forth, we could simply go back and forth, like comments:
Reply by Lucario621
Reply by Reply by Scimonster
etc.
etc.
I like this because it allows more horizontal width for text, since this page is already quite tall :P.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 18:49, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I was hoping we wouldn't need something like this at all. You always just type the block label. When there's an icon in there, I put in many syntax synonims (when flag clicked, when gf clicked, when green flag clicked), not to mention it doesn't care about spacing. Instead of making this all more overwhelming that it actually is, we should just have a page that describes how the syntax works (compared to the real blocks in Scratch). There should be very few exceptions. Which blocks do you think are not clear as to what their syntax would be? It's probably a better solution to simplify the plugin then to require people to look up syntax.
JSO (talk | contribs) 18:19, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Good point JSO. I think you're right. We don't really need information about the Block Syntax on every block's page. Just like Scratch itself, the Block Plugin should be simple and intuitive :).
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 18:49, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess so. :)
At some point WeirdF pointed out that Brits say "anti-clockwise" instead of "counter-clockwise". You could add acw as a synonym for that block.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:14, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

When will the ¨Request an account¨ work again?

I would like to make an attempt at advertising the Wiki by making a forum topic/project, but I don´t want to until the Request An Account page works again. When will it be fixed?
Purika (talk | contribs) 13:30, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure. JSO, the one who works on the technical of the side of the Scratch Wiki, is quite busy, so I'm not sure when he will be able to fix the problem.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:19, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
now :)

Articles about LLK Projects

Recently some articles have been created about projects by the Lifelong Kindergarten (of the MIT Media Lab) relating to Scratch. As there is no other information about the topics except for brief descriptions on the website, they are not notable enough to have articles. These projects should only receive articles or sections of articles when they become public.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:15, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

But could we create a single article on them all?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:08, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Forum Changes

As there are changes being made to the forums in the upcoming 24 hours (unless there are any changes of plans), our wiki will also need to update articles accordingly. Let's brainstorm a list of things we will have to update. (You can edit it in my post.)

Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:57, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Looks about right with what I know.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Fun fun, love having something to do =D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 00:36, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Concerning the forum sections, do they really need full articles? :/ IMO they could fit in the Scratch Forums article. :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 22:42, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Taking out red links because Lucario agreed with me ;P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 02:05, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

What do you think :P

Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 03:59, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

I think we should design it a little more, than start going for it!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:26, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm all for it.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 19:28, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
+1
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 05:42, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps we should create a page on the wiki FAQ ideas, and carry on the conversation on the talk page?
Lightnin (talk | contribs) 18:36, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Sure! :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:46, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
OK, since you seem to support the idea, let's start with the first question we probably have to ask. What categories do you think all of the questions can be categorized into? (Around 3-10 categories probably). Scripting, Animating, Uploading, Forums, Languages, and Other are some that I came up with.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 17:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Projects would be a good one.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 17:40, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
What do we need Languages for? Scratch Program too.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:28, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Article on safety

Applejack and I were discussing how you can trace a Scratcher by music they put on a Scratch project. We figured it would be nice to have an article on safety on Scratch, with Scratch-specific points. Here are some, you can add to this list:

  • Be careful when posting music, clear all traces
  • Don't try to post images to the forums with local file:/// paths.
  • Don't link to your Google Docs files without changing the share settings of the file.
  • Black out personal text in screenshots.
  • ...
    Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 07:03, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
It might be worthwhile...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:41, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Given a few days with one semi-positive reply, I'm gonna make one.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 12:42, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Concerning the Unused files page

The transcribed images are cluttering that page up and giving an unclear idea of what files are completely unused so... what if we made a page and put all the transcribed images on it? :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:37, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Seems a bit strange, but I'm fine with it ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:09, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Good idea.
Bsteward (talk | contribs)16:18, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm cool. :3
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:25, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Maybe like a user subpage?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 17:28, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Or in the project namespace.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:33, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm leaning towards just deleting them at this point. But I'll ask JSO first...
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 19:30, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Lucario621 :) Delete them.
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:38, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
OK, time to start bombing Category:Transcribed Images!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:52, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm getting directory problems when trying to delete files :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:26, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I got some too...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:48, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Got an error too...
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 05:32, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

What to do if someone forgets to sign something?

Can you do their sig for them if you know the time from Recent Changes? Or do you have to tell them on their talk page?
Purika (talk | contribs) 21:36, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Just add <scratchsig>Username</scratchsig> for them, without a timestamp :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:37, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
I will do that next time! ;)
Purika (talk | contribs) 22:14, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
If you bother to get the time, there's no harm in putting it. :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:42, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Bluck plugin error

say ([mySensor v] sensor value)

Should be a sensor block with a dropdown
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:08, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Already listed on the bug page.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:48, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Is this MediaWiki?

This is MediaWiki - isn't it?
Purika (talk | contribs)

Yep, with a custom skin.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 20:45, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks!

Link on Nav bar

I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but I think we should have a link to the Wiki on the purple primary navigation bar.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:53, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I accidentally clicked on "minor edit".
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:56, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
No matter. :)
It's been suggested before. Perhaps one day (2.0 site revamp?) the ST will change the blue navbar.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:09, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Well.

Apparently, someone got onto my Scratch account (whom, I don't know), and said bad stuff on the forums and got me IP banned. I can still go on the Wiki, though. This really sucks, since my Scratch friends are hardly online anywhere else. And since I don't have an email address, I can't contact the Scratch Team. I seem to recall someone saying IP bans never last more than 6 months.
ElectricSparx (talk | contribs) 17:57, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

That's too bad. Do your parents have email? Maybe they can contact the ST for you. And the statement about bans is false; read the article. ;)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:02, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
How come they banned your IP? Did someone get onto your Scratch account from your computer?
Purika (talk | contribs) 19:12, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
@Sci Yes, but I don't want to bother them about it. @Purika I have no idea why they outright IP banned me. A one day to one week account ban would have sufficed.

And plus, I have NEVER gotten banned before, so I should only have an account ban. If any of you guys would be nice and contact the Scratch Team (or at least tell them to talk with me about it on my talk page), that would be good.
ElectricSparx (talk | contribs) 21:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Uh will go comment on one of Paddle2See's projects? :S
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 21:41, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, this is not the place to be discussing this kind of issue. Get your parents to email the Scratch team at help@scratch.mit.edu if you do not have access to email yourself.
Paddle2See (talk | contribs)
They really don't have time to mess with it.
ElectricSparx (talk | contribs) 17:28, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
In Scratch 2.0, we hope to reduce or remove our dependence on email. But for now, that's our only private channel, so it's really our only option.
Lightnin (talk | contribs) 14:34, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Featured image

When will you change it? It's been like that ever since I got on the Wiki... If you want, I can suggest some good ones.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:51, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

PLEASE suggest some more images to be featured! A whole bunch, if you want. And also the featured article, if you have any requests. You or anyone else!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:47, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
^ You won't get in trouble for it :D

Editing checklist

I was wondering, would somebody care to draw up a checklist for stuff to remember to do when creating or editing a Wiki page? Some I can think of are—

  • Bolden the main word with three single quotes
  • Link as many words as possible
  • Remember to write the 2-3 word summary in the given text box
  • When commenting on a Talk page, sign with 4 tildes (~).
    Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 14:57, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Not every word needs to be linked to; only ones that a user is likely to follow.
And I suppose this checklist could be added to the top, when creating a new page.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:07, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Just had a look at some MediaWiki pages (those control the wiki), and I decided that when you try to create a new page, it reminds you to bolden the title. (in MediaWiki:Newarticletext)
Also, users could be reminded about an edit summary above the summary box, and there it could also remind users to sign, if it's a talk page (that message would only appear on talk pages). (in MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning2)
Let's get more user's opinions on this...

Recent Scratch Updates

Recently the Scratch Team has been making many changes to the website. This includes changes to the forum post count and a new Scratch Team Blog. Both should probably be added to the news and have articles related to the topics changed accordingly.

Scratch Wiki in different languages

Have you ever thought about translating the Scratch Wiki into different languages? It would take a long time, but it would be really useful! I could translate to Hungarian for example.
Purika (talk | contribs) 15:52, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

At one point we did think about it. Spanish was the first one brought up. We were having support until JSO gave us some great reasons not to:
  • Scratch is a small community
  • Think about Wikipedia: they have it in all sorts of languages, but if you know English, you obviously use the English Wikipedia, as it has the most information, and most correct information
  • If progress on this wiki is slow, imagine a sub wiki!
So, I don't think we'll do it. Sorry.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:46, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Yeah, this is true.
Purika (talk | contribs) 18:10, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Sci, you forgot to add
There has actually been consideration of creating a German Scratch Wiki for the German Scratch Community. However, we have decided to not make it, since we currently don't have enough resources to handle this type of project, as the Scratch Team currently has most of its energy focused on Scratch 2.0 development. Sorry.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 21:20, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
It's alright, I was just wondering :)
Purika (talk | contribs) 21:57, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
The informal German Scratch Community has just started to make an own ScratchWiki at http://wiki.scratch-dach.info. It's just in the state of beginning but we hope it will grow fast. If we succeed, we would be happy to connect it with the original Scratch-Wiki like English/German-Wikipedia are connected. Could you send us your Wiki-Skins to make it the same design like the original? Please send it to mtwoll[at]gmail[dot]com
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 20:09, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
That looks really cool! It would be nice to connect them as well, and possibly with other languages too.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs)
Here is a Test, how a Interwiki-Connection would look like: Scratch Wiki:Interwiki
MartinWollenweber (talk | contribs) 13:49, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
That's very nice! Perhaps we could have a section below "Navigation" and "Toolbox" on the left which is "Languages", and it would have English and Deutsche listed. Or if that perhaps takes up too much room, we could simply include a section under Navigation which says "Other Languages" - and it would link to that page. :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 19:27, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
I think having a full languages section would be nice.
Maybe we could convince the Spanish-speaking Scratch community to make a Spanish Scratch Wiki too, and add Espanol to it. :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:30, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

In the news stuff

The post count one is wrong—it shows 100+ 500+ 1000+, not >100 >500 >1000. Also, there's a floating " at the end.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:59, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Changed. There's no floating '"' at the end though. :/

Case-insensitive equals block workaround

Hey, I seem to have stumbled upon a way to determine the case of a character in Scratch using costume-based exploitation. I can't see any workaround pages on the wiki for calculating the case of a letter so I thought I would add one if I may? My documentation is on the fora here: [1]
Sparks (talk | contribs) 19:45, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Sigh, I just found another, much simpler method. It turns out that the
<[list v] contains [a]?>
block is case-sensitive. Still, a page with these two workarounds might be a good idea, I know that the problem plagues a lot of Scratchers.
Sparks (talk | contribs) 21:03, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
i say go right ahead, captain
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 21:36, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Haha, thanks, but I actually can't find the "create page" button! I don't spend much time on the wiki, last time I was on here Sci kept tripping me up for not following the many editing rules! So some help would be appreciated cleaning up the mess I leave!
Sparks (talk | contribs) 22:35, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
There isn't a "Create Page" button actually xD We normally edit the URL to the right page, or you can create a broken link and click on it.
URLs on the Scratch Wiki go like this: wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/article-name-goes-here
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 01:06, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I have added this page now here: case-insensitive-equals-block
Sparks (talk | contribs) 08:09, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm a newbie myself (and one who leaves a considerable mess to clean up at that), but I moved it to what I think is a better title. Of course, I accidentally named it case-sensitive, facepalmed, and moved again, but don't you think it's better now?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:43, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I deleted the mistake redirects. :)
We have an article on case sensing already though: Case Sensing. ;)
Let's try and merge the articles into the first one. :)
