Page about Wiki formatting

Could some body who has been on the wiki for awhile make a page about how it should be formatted. This would help keep formatting consistent.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 18:30, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't quite get what you mean. Do you mean wikicode syntax, or how the page should be set up? I have a feeling it's the latter, right?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:44, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
How the page should be set up, For example what should be capitalized, what pages should be liked to each other, etc. I am sometimes unsure some of theses things.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 18:48, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. XD
If someone else starts it, I'll contribute, but I feel like I can't do it by my self.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:50, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
So like Help:Page_Format?
SJRCS_011 (talk | contribs)02:51, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, except help pages get lowercased. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:34, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
I think Scratch Wiki:Formatting would be better.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 22:01, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Changing my signature

I made a new signature. How do I use it.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 19:40, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Manually type {{User:Bsteward/sig}} ~~~~~ each time. ;)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:43, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks!
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 19:45, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
You don't >:O
JSO (talk | contribs) 13:50, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I really would like to use a custom signature (Please let me use it), but if you really don't want me to use a custom signature, say so in it's talk page.

Glitch in Recent Changes. O_o

For some reason, the creation of Fixing Scripts that Don't Run isn't showing there. It shows when it was moved, and it also shows the creator's account creation.

Maybe it's because the page doesn't exist anymore?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't understand, Recent changes works fine for me.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 21:27, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm quite sure page creation notices in Recent Changes get deleted when their articles do — I think I've seen it happen a few times ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:47, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I know about deletions, but this one was moved. I've seen them stay even after being moved.

Article About Exporting Projects

I'm going to write an article on how to compile a SB file to app, exe and jar.

I can't find any articles that already talk about it so, I'll make a new article. Do you think I should make a seperate article for app, exe and jar or just put them all in a single article?
Jji7skyline (talk | contribs) 05:06, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Put them all into a single article for now.
Categorize it under "Other Tutorials", I think.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:30, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

New page

We need a page on collision detection. Except I can't make it, because I don't know how to do it.
GameHutSoftware (talk | contribs) 22:32, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Working on images atm ^^

Favicon

Earlier, the idea of changing Scratch wiki's favion was brought up. It was not decided if it should be changed. I like this Idea and think it should be changed. Some ideas were link and Wiki favicon.png. I like this one better.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 03:41, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

I actually prefer the SW one :/
Jji7skyline (talk | contribs) 07:10, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Me too. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:11, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I like the SW one as well, but it looks like it needs a bit of cleaning up around the edges.
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 10:01, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

I made a new version of the icon. I made it 16 by 16 pixels (size required for favicons), and cleaned up the edges.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 13:11, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Good.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:12, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

How do we get it changed?
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 02:16, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

If JSO (or Lucario, or Andres) thinks it should be, they can do it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:34, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
They are not on the wiki much.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 20:36, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I check the wiki regularly ;) I think browsers use the scratch.mit.edu domain favicon automatically. We could specify a different one (I don't know if we already do), but it would certainly make the wiki look less official. So I'd suggest we keep using the current, scratch.mit.edu favicon.
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:03, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
Yes, we do link to this /favicon.ico.
Why would it seem less official? It's closer to the original than Scratch Resources's.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:00, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
I'd rather have a custom icon for this site.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 12:28, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Account approval not working at the moment

It doesn't load, and displays the message "No database selected" :/ Does it work for anyone else?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:26, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Me too.
JSO, did you move the database?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:10, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
BTW, why don't acronyms work well in titles?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:11, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Eh, I just changed it because it looked silly :P ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:43, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
Me too :S
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 11:08, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
E-mailed Scratch Wiki to make sure JSO knows ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:29, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Received the message :P I have exams atm so I'm very very busy. Also I didn't do anything to the database so I have no clue what's happening. And servers refusing to work all by themselves isn't good news.
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:00, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

When Scratchers use the wiki as an advertising area... :/

Sometimes Scratchers put their projects or projects they're fans of in the example, and use it as an advertising space. Is this going to become a problem eventually?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:41, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I'd wait to see how it develops before taking an action... how long has this been happening for?  Vista4563   Talk • Contribs  22:53, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I see this problem a lot, but don't see an easy solution. Could a system be setup that only allows projects made specifically for the wiki to be linked to from the wiki.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 00:17, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
By "in the example", I assume that you mean in pictures around the wiki. This is an issue that I previously worried about, but the majority of the community thought was not a problem. If this becomes a problem,, the main solution is to blur out the names where possible, and if that would happen to ruin the informative-ness of the image, than just make something such as "Example Project".
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:39, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I think that he means using links to "example" projects for advertising.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 01:54, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
@linking to projects: IMO linking in articles is okay if the projects are relevant to the subject ^^
@images of projects: I don't think that's a problem at the moment :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:36, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm referring to links in example sections. I don't really care abut blurring names in the images. :P
Maybe we shouldn't allow more than 4 projects in a section, to try and reduce spam. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:03, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Lol yeah, sometimes it irks me when I upload an image and then someone comes along and unnecessarily uploads a new version. When I look over the new image, I see their name >_>
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 10:52, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I see what you mean by examples. It's certainly up to you folks. I think it's fine as long as the projects do work as good examples, and I would agree with Jon to say that 4 should probably be the limit. Of course if there is a project that works as a better example, it should replace one of the other projects.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:07, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
That was my suggestion, the 4 project limit. :P
@Chris: Oh yeah, me too...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:55, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
If you want to remove username from pictures, and have Google Chrome you can right click on the user name, click "inspect element". This will bring up Google Chrome Developer Tool to the location it the HTML the user name is. Right click on the location of the name in the HTML. Then click "Edit text". Replace the text with something like "Scratch User". Close developer tools and take a screenshot. I hope this helps. :)
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 20:36, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Do you consider pages about collaborations/mods advertising?
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 20:56, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

In Firefox Alpha you can do that, and in any version with the Firebug extension. :D
Collabs and mods are allowed, unless it gets too much in an ad form. Then it has to be cleaned.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:26, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't bother blurring names. Just keep them in there. If you come across "wiki advertisement", bring it up on the article's talk page or here.

User Groups Rights Question

How does the group "all" have the edit right when users who aren't logged in can't edit?
SJRCS_011 (talk | contribs)22:42, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

I think that they have the right to edit, but are blocked from editing. Does that make any sense?
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 23:21, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Default value

Think it's worth an article? :S
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 10:58, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Maybe just add their default value to each of the block articles. And on the block article add what it means.
SJRCS_011 (talk | contribs)12:33, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
We have the default value in each block article; I know, I did it all myself. ^^
I think the article has some content worth keeping. It could be expanded, if anyone wants to try.
Why isn't this in the page's talk page?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't know the page already existed, lol silly me XD Never mind this then.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:48, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Main Page

This was brought up before, and I think it's a good idea. We should change the main page from Scratch Wiki to Main Page. As Jon said (there), we could also create an article (in the article namespace) about the wiki! :D Wikipedia uses its Project:About article as "a general introduction for visitors to Wikipedia." "The project also has an encyclopedia article about itself: Wikipedia". Why can't we do that?

BTW, Jon, when you said "And there's a link to the Main Page in Navigation - I can't change that link.", you weren't thinking of MediaWiki:mainpage. xP

It seems the only reason we didn't do it then was that Lucario vetoed it. Also, he said that he might do it, if a couple of anonymous friends agreed, but then the conversation shifted onto admins not having blocking powers (>:[), and the original question never got answered.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:11, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

I think it's a good idea.
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 22:29, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I do recall what you are talking about. I'm fine with the idea, right now, as long as you're willing to fix all of the links and such needed. Just get a couple other people to post here agreeing and you can do it :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 03:30, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
I like it :3
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:48, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
*reads past discussion* Ugh I was such a noob back then -_-
I'm fine with the Main Page change btw ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:59, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Seems it's 5 agrees and no disagrees. 8D
Time for some WikiChanges. XD
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:10, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Are you going to move community portal to Scratch_Wiki:Community_Portal or something like that?
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 19:48, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
No, this is a talk page of the Project namespace. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:53, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm ok with the change itself. However, please wait a little longer before actually making the change next time. I know it's been more than a week, but still. For example, the header logo still links to the old home page and I can't fix it at the moment. Later today, hopefully. Also, a lot of people copy-paste links to the home page, so you should always be very careful when changing it. Something to remember for next time... :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 10:37, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I know about the header, I meant to remind you that it has to be updated.
And about the C&P links, well, now it links to a page about the wiki. No biggie. ;)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:47, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Is it just me, or...

The Scratch website is gone! Whenever I go to scratch.mit.edu, I get my (Samr80) download site! Whats wrong?
Nickbrickmaster (talk | contribs) 23:42, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't happen to me. :/

User avatars are gone

No clue why. Hm.
JSO (talk | contribs) 23:44, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

What are you talking about? :/
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 03:15, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
I see them. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:32, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
... which means we made a ninja fix so you didn't even notice :) They were gone because there was an internal server communication problem over at the Media Lab, so the wiki server couldn't reach the Scratch API anymore. There was a severe security problem with the accounts approval system, so that is taken down for now. I'll try to get it up back and running (securely) ASAP.
JSO (talk | contribs) 10:29, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Account approval page gives a 404

Sorry if I look like a "bad-news bringer" :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:33, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/accounts/request.php and http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/accounts/mypassword.php give me a 404 too :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:37, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Seems the /accounts/ directory got lost, 'cause that gives me a 404 too. :S
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:55, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I get a 404 too!
Bsteward (talk | contribs) 15:31, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
