how do scratchers become sysops

How do scratchers become sysops?
Coinman (talk | contribs) 23:15, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

By being a good editor :D and not being lazy like me. /me would probably be a sysop if he wasn't so lazy and had kept editing ever since he started.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 04:08, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, we were dedicated editors and the tools are kinda useful for us... :S I dunno how to explain this really :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:30, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
I asked, and I needed the tools for some projects and I had been a helpful and active editor.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 06:15, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
I made too many edits and thought the tools would help me make even more! XD
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:40, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

wow that was fast XD
Coinman (talk | contribs) 13:48, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

I dunno whether we have a list anywhere of what you need, but this is what I think a good sysop needs in no particular order:
  • Almost perfect (preferably perfect) spelling and grammar
  • Having been on the wiki for a fairly substantial amount of time
  • Having a fairly substantial amount of good edits
  • Having a firm understanding of the rules
  • Having a basic understanding of MediaWiki formatting
  • Being active, and making useful edits
  • Being a very responsible person
  • Wanting the job for reasons other than power
  • Having a need to use the extra tools provided for you
    WeirdF (talk | contribs) 16:17, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Why does everyone else explain everything better than me, lol :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 01:57, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
There's also luck :3
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 02:13, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
LOL.
That's an awesome list, WeirdF. Thing is, veggie didn't always use immaculate grammar on talk pages and in his edit summaries. :P He did do very well where it counted though. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:43, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm lazy. And exceptional. :D
I do use / fix grammar in articles, so it doesn't matter much.

You know how fads on the forums come and go?

We should explain what they are and make a page for it!

Lots of people suggest Minecraft, SSBB and different things to have their own forum section on the forums but the moderators/scratch team always turn them down because they are just fads that will come and go.
JJROCKER (talk | contribs) 13:09, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

maybe, or a sticky on the forums
ScareCrowCritic (talk | contribs) 22:00, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't think we need a whole Wiki page about it, maybe just a section in the Miscellaneous article that lists 3 or 4 of the more popular ones.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 23:12, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Minor edit?

Yeah, what is a minor edit, what's the difference, when should I use it, and, well, any other information? So far, I've only used it for signing if I forget.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:58, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

This page explains it pretty well. :3
A minor edit is an edit that doesn't change much; for example — changing a hyphen (-) to a dash (—).
A minor edit has m next to it in recent changes and page histories. You can hide minor edits in recent changes.
That's all I think...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:09, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
How about on my page?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 12:16, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
Anything that doesn't change too much; what I said before. ;)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:41, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
i like to think of minor edits differently. but people yell at me. :I
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:08, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
If you were on Wikipedia you'd get a formal warning for your "minor" edits. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 14:09, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
!!! I NEVER SAW THAT PAGE BEFORE :O
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:11, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
but seriously nobody cares that much here. and it's a matter of personal opinion. :I
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 23:21, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
I usually use it if I'm editing my user page, fix a spelling or two, change a few words, or add a short sentence.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 23:13, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

User talks

Can we post non-wiki-related material?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Scratch-related stuff might be alright, but not general chat :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:32, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Not that it's bad to talk a little bit, but going into long discussions about who-knows-what probably isn't allowed :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:33, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Can I use it to, say, post a piece of code longer than 500 chars for somebody (>500 'cause it can't fit in a comment)?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 16:06, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
I do not recommend that. User talk pages are intended so Scratchers can talk to each other about various wiki articles/issues and some sparing general chat, and not for off-topic material. Talk pages are intended to support collaboration and discussion, not other uses such as off-topic chat. Assuming that you're not talking about wiki code, then I'd put it on the Scratch forums or somewhere else away from the Scratch Wiki. It's not like we think it will be harmful to any major extend, but remember, this is the Scratch Wiki -- not a big place to just "put text". :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 23:20, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
'k, I'll remember that.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 05:06, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Purge article

What does that mean or do? If it's bad, by the way, sorry (I accidentally purged the community portal...)
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 16:08, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

It just updates or refreshes the page you're viewing so you can see if any changes have been made. Everyone asks that question once during their wiki career, I know I did xP
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 17:01, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Lol me too :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 05:46, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Jon's, Jwosty's, mine. I can't find WeirdF's and Chris's is probably on the old wiki which I'm not bothering to search for. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:59, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Don't think I have one, but I've been on wikis for a long time.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 22:07, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

The _meow_

Users are commonly spamming that on the front page in comments and tags. Should there be a section on the spam article?
ScareCrowCritic (talk | contribs) 00:11, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

IMO it could just be a temporary fad, but I don't see why not :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 02:05, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Its just that maybe the people who do it think they can do it because there's nothing about it here.
ScareCrowCritic (talk | contribs) 13:09, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Can you make an archive for your sandbox?

Just wondering
SJRCS_011 (talk | contribs)16:05, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

uh yeah. it's your userspace.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:39, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Though you can always check the history of your sandbox to see past revisions. :P
If you want to know about sandbox sub-pages, I have 3 sandboxes. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:21, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

One more question: Can we have separate talk pages for our sandbox and user pages, or only our user talk page?
SJRCS_011 (talk | contribs) 02:03, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, you can have talk pages for pretty much anything - click the Discussion button at your sandbox for its talk page :)

Woah! 4 Pacman deletion pages!

Can anyone delete any three of these? a, b, c, d
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 08:35, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Personal vote: a, d, and b or c.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 08:38, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
They're redirects. No.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:56, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
What do you mean?
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 10:47, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Redirects are pages that will link you to the correct article. It's supposed to be automatic, but the Google Search we use here doesn't support redirects D: We're not gonna delete them though, just in case...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:24, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
And as someone (Can't remember who) said, it makes it easier for the editors.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 12:58, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

How do I make a new page?

I've been wondering how I create a new page. Is there like a "New Page" button or something?
ElectricSparx (talk | contribs) 03:19, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Edit the url to the article you want: The article "Awesome" would be http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Awesome .
And no there isn't a New Page button D:
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:24, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
There's a "create" button though. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:32, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Not like the wikia one though D:
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 09:59, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
IMO still pretty easy though. :/
ES: Why don't you read Help:Starting a new page?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:28, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Request: Make citation needed and weasel words templates

Hey all! Looks like these two templates are missing. Anyone care to make them?
Vista4563 (talk | contribs) 13:03, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

I'll do citation needed soon, but what's weasel words?

this
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:00, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
I haven't seen the weasel words template, but citation needed looks good. Really, the only template that needed to be added was the citation needed template. Thanks!

Account approval needs more attention

TBH we've all been slacking in account approval lately... FYI there were eleven accounts pending when I checked today :S Yeah I know that you get less motivated as time goes on, but think about the Scratchers waiting for their accounts :/ I'm not blaming anyone specifically btw, it's all of our faults :P

I'll try and check the account approval page way more often now, and I hope the other account approvers will do so too :3

I Think Im Leaving Scratch

Hey Guys. I remember all the great times I've had with the Scratch Community and Scratch Programming itself. I want to thank everyone on the wiki especially because you guys encouraged and taught me a lot :). Scratch has showed me that programming is definitely a part of my future. In order to help me with my goal I am moving up to higher level programming in Java and C++. Its amazing the kinds of things these languages can do :3. I just don't feel motivated to participate in Scratch since I started immersing my self in higher levels of programming. I know you guys will understand :). Perhaps I will come back to editing as much as when I first started on the wiki (4-6 hours a day xP). Once again its been great working with you guys on the wiki and in Scratch :D. This is Dazman signing off for now. I will still check my talk every once in a while so you will still be able to talk to me if you want. Have fun Scratching guys. Heck I might even end up making a Scratch Mod with my future skills :P so I'm not just disappearing. I just want to say this is pretty much my end on wiki work and Scratch In General. Talk To you Later guys. Bye <3
Dazman (talk | contribs) 09:20, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for posting this instead of mysteriously disappearing :P
Good luck in wherever you go next :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:11, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Goodbye.
I'm really honestly glad that I was able to meet you on here, and it's really been great working with you. Good luck!
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 13:51, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
In my opinion, you can outgrow Scratch the language, but not the concept or website. Hey, Jens Mönig and Brian Harvey—Berkeley professors are Squeak/C/C++/JS/Prolog/CS concept wizards—are still working on developing Scratch. I think if you think you outgrew Scratch programming, look in the advanced topics forums.
Anyway, if you do leave, good luck, and may the force be with you :).
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 14:29, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
I agree about not outgrowing the community here. :P
Sorry to see you go, Daz. Have fun with Java/C++.

BYOB images

Would it be better to make images of scripts in BYOB, because of multiline and zebra coloring? It makes it easier to read the scripts, especially when it's big and complicated.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:35, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Isn't that what's already done? :S
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:22, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Not most of the time. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:18, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
I did that for the Event-Based programming article.
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 14:37, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Agreed... But I don't feel like replacing everything...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 22:53, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
I would generally say no because most of the wiki's viewers are just using Scratch, and only a small percentage is using BYOB. For that sake, using the standard Scratch coloring would probably be more familiar and easier to understand, and prevent people from asking "Why are they different colors?" and such.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 01:29, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
But they'd know that they were looking at a BYOB script, so there shouldn't be much confusion :3 :3 :3
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 02:39, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
So, Lucario, how about removing zebra coloring? Or put a template at the top, saying "this article uses images of blocks made in BYOB, which may differ slightly from Scratch."
@Hardmath: That's where I got the idea from. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:49, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
Also, BYOB images can help compress scripts:

[move (10) steps] [Do something] // Byob block [move (-10) steps]

I'll get on that template...
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 11:44, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Got the template done!
Alonzo (vector).svg This article or section uses images made with Snap!, a Scratch Modification which allows script formatting. Differences include block multilining and zebra coloring.
{{BYOBimgs}}
Hardmath123 (talk | contribs) 12:02, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
If you feel this would be useful for certain articles, then do use the template wherever you need it. However don't use it for all articles -- only the ones that need it.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 22:35, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
We're not that dumb, and neither are the people viewing stuff like File:If () Workaround.png. :P (I hope :P)

Start Posting Archives

A few months ago I found this cool site where you can view archives of sites. Its really cool. You just type in the site adress and wella! For some topics I think it would be cool to link scratchers to past archives of the site when mentioned. Like, in the "Front Page" artical... why dont we let users view the front page back in the days of 2007 and stuff.

If you want to check out the site just type in "Way back machine". Its 100% free. Also, sorry for spelling mistakes. I didn't feel like running it thorugh spell check.
LordAwesome123 (talk | contribs)

I think that it'd be nice to reference these old versions as well, and possibly make pages for some of them. The genesis of the Scratch program and the Scratch Website are largely undocumented and it would be nice to gather as much info as we could about it.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:31, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
We have one link there. :P Scratch Website#Beta
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:53, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
It would help with the timeline article, but forum posts are more accurate and whenever there was something major there would have been a post about it. Unfortunately you can't download any old Scratch versions with the site.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:29, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

I wonder why...

It seems that the Scratch team is doing maintenance work on the main website, but not here. I wonder what is happening...

I was wondering about this too. :S Hi, veggie
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 20:20, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
Here's the answer:
It was just a glitch.     We were resizing one of our disk partitions and the resize operation failed, so we had to do a whole filesystem check and it took a loooong time. But it's all good now.
