Yes! This is awesome! Thanks, JSO! :D
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 10:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Is that why no one was making edits for such a long time? There was a technical issue?
Dazman (talk | contribs) 19:22, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
uh huh.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 19:36, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
How did I not know about this?

Scratch 2.0 prealpha

Am I allowed to add information about the blocks, features, and other things about the Scratch 2.0 prealpha or not?
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 01:22, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Uh, I think you should wait till Scratch 2.0 actually comes out ^^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:23, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
When you got the prealpha were you given any warnings not to give information?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 05:32, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes he was.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:11, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
How do we get Pre-Alpha?
Dazman (talk | contribs) 07:14, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Veggie got it from a friend who stole it at Scratch Day.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Can you send me it? I won't write anything about it.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 07:22, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't have it, though I really wish I could.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:34, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Veggie needs to send me it.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 08:38, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
He's not allowed. :(
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:41, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, if I say "Please give me a cookie" that doesn't mean you have to give me a cookie... :P
BWOG (talk | contribs) 12:54, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Technically true, but you know what it means.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:48, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

They didn't steal it from Scratch Day. The alpha was given out at Scratch Day, for a workshop. The friend gave it to me and he was given it at Scratch Day.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:51, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

I feel it is veggiemans responsibility to send me an email with a zipped version of scratch 2.0 or I will probably cry.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 22:37, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Please don't cry. It's not my fault I can't distribute it. And besides, it's basically just the experimental viewer with a few new blocks; cloning, block creation, and sensing colours. Again, I'm really sorry. And I don't even know your email so I couldn't anyways.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 22:54, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Overall, your friend shouldn't have given you the pre-alpha since you're not supposed to distribute it, but no harm has been done, so consider yourself lucky. Gbear put it on a website for Scratchers to download, however the Scratch Team told them to take it down. But I will have to agree with you as far as saying that you shouldn't give anybody else the pre-alpha. But I will say that it won't hurt if you put a sentence or two in the Scratch 2.0 article saying something around the lines of:
"In the pre-alpha given for users to test out at Scratch Day @ MIT, two major features shown: cloning, as well as procedures. Additionally, Scratchers were able to save the projects made in the pre-alpha with the file format "sb2" -- however there has been no confirmation on if that will stay."
I think that's simple to the point :-). Additional details could also be included such as which blocks were added for cloning, or the abilities procedures could have (such as booleans and textboxes inside of them, if I recall properly).
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 02:01, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Do not use the wiki with IE

That's why I uploaded the image while the wiki was down. XD

FF vs IE.png

(I used my ASCII ₩ŐⱤÐƧ generator for the text.)

So... yeah.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

IE stinks anyways :P
ProgrammingFreak (talk | contribs) 10:51, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Of course. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:56, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
It's sort of like a placeholder. :P
BWOG (talk | contribs) 12:56, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't format as well with Chrome as with Firefox. (I'm using it for now while I'm on vacation. :/)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:26, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

It looks nice on Chrome for me...
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:14, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Eh, the "Unwatch" tab rolls over onto the next line for me. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:46, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

ThePCKid had a good idea for the TOC :D

There is a cool new way to organize Scratch Wiki:Table of Contents/Control Blocks, as you can see in ThePCKid's sandbox. He also put it into effect,[1] but I rollbacked it. Why? Because it wasn't community decided and it was the only one. If everyone agrees, I (or someone else), can undo that rollback.

Oh, and I don't think I can make them because I don't know any CSS or whatever that is. ^^
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:05, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

It looks great, but it doesn't fit with the other TOC pages :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:37, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
The categorization is cool but the blue background is rather distracting and contrasts with the rest of the wiki... maybe the background could be colored white? :3
Oh, and if it goes into effect he (or we if more of us understand the coding) should add it to all the other list pages :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 22:39, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
The blue bg is just his sandbox, not how we would do it. ;)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 03:22, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
But it still looks so different :3 Eh, there's nothing wrong with having it different :P Count my opinion however you want to :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 23:51, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
Do I hear support? :D
ThePCKid (talk | contribs) 14:40, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
I support.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:25, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Looks nice! I support, as long as it has a standard white background. Perhaps you could also format the titles (Hat Blocks, C Blocks, etc.) so they appear as Level 3 Headers -- that way it sticks out more.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 18:52, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
OK. I just can't remove that space at the bottom. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:42, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Get all the links from here, and look at the amazing change! BTW, I took Lucario's tip and enlarged the stuff there too. :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:31, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
EDIT: Can we edit that page and make it even cooler? :3
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:22, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Can we make a new TOC page, Front Page? I worked it all out right here. :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Cool! The only thing missing is the message bar.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:42, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Files will not delete.

Period. JSO: We Need You!

I always get something like "Error deleting file: Could not create directory "deleted/g/9/q"."
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 12:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

It's supposed to delete a file, not create a directory! [2] Also, Google didn't help much. All it came up with was "Determining subspaces on which a matrix is nonnegative definite" and "Estimating a Real Parameter in a Class of Semiparametric Models".
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:02, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
It creates a directory for the deleted file because all files deleted are still available. If it's a Linux/Unix server, the directories need to be chmodded to 777, I believe.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:49, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Other Languages

I know it won't happen for quite a while, (At least a year, if ever) but do you think that in the future we will have the Wiki in multiple languages? I don't know any other languages, but I'm just curious. (All I can really say in Spanish is "Bananas no hablas Espanol")
BWOG (talk | contribs) 15:12, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Google Translate this.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Google Translate fails. It's only good for Spanish and even then it isn't good. Anyway, looks like it might happen sooner then I thought... And then this page might actually be useful. I think it just has to have a thing on the bottom-left side like on Wikipedia (Example) to be removed from the list.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 15:36, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Maybe...
So, a site, maybe http://es.wiki.scratch.mit.edu/ would be set up for the Spanish wiki? But let's not get ahead of ourselves. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 15:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
That would be fun. I know some Spanish, and I'm learning more, so I could totally help with that if we did that.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 16:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Having multiple languages for each page on the wiki would definitely be useful, however only if there are active, native-speaking contributors of the language we're interested in translating to should we consider, if you ask me.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:37, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
You know I natively speak Dutch, and there's a dutch wikipedia too. Trust me, I always use the english wikipedia just because there is more information on it, and it's more correct. There are about 25 million people speaking Dutch, and even that doesn't work. Why would we take all the trouble to a small community like ours?
JSO (talk | contribs) 11:21, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
You're probably right. :S
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:02, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

It would be good to have another special page: Pages without files.

Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:48, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Oooooooooooooooh I think there was something like that on the Programming Wiki, but I can't find it D: It'd be nice if we had that special page though.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:53, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
I'd like that; then we could see what articles need to be filled with beautiful color :3
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 12:09, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
I know.
Thanks for the support, now we need JSO or another bureaucrat to add it!
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:36, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
This might take a while.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 06:25, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
But I think you guys know their emails. XD
(No, I'm not saying you should spam their inboxes.)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 08:19, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
I support.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 16:08, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
:D
The bureaucrats have been here, why no comment? ^^
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 13:19, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Answer, anyone?
BWOG (talk | contribs) 00:52, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
You can't expect to get a reply from them for everything...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:13, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
But they're the ones who can do it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 09:12, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
This is not a helpful reply.
JSO (talk | contribs) 08:35, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Since when are you a spammer? ^^
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:41, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
We're sure making a lot of progress here. Forum Smiley - Rolleyes.png Anyway, other wikis seem to just have a category for pages without files/images. I could keep searching and see if I find anything.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:24, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Another: We have Random page in category, why not Random page in namespace?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:57, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

This page might be helpful in the future. There aren't any of the ones we've been discussing, but some of them might be helpful.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:39, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Ooh, maybe the MultiUpload would be cool.
Scimonster (talk | contribs)
This might be what you're thinking of: AdvancedRandom. Here's a couple more that could be useful: SecurePoll Contributors
BWOG (talk | contribs) 14:41, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, there are many cool extensions there are MediaWiki, however none of them the wiki really *needs*. And in my opinion, "pages without files" and "random page in namespace" aren't really needed. Random page in category might not be needed either, but it *came* with MediaWiki, so we can't really remove it - at least there's no reason to.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 18:55, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
But the without files one can really help. Quote Icon.png Quote:
Author: I'd like that; then we could see what articles need to be filled with beautiful color :3
Text: Chris
Source: Above

This is a big part of my reasoning for requesting it.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:08, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

And there are lots of pages that wouldn't be to hard to get images for, but they're hard to find. It would make it a lot easier.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 14:14, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
*too :P
And about the category for them, who's going to bother going through all 1,493 articles and put the category on, and when it does get an image someone might forget to remove it. The problem is the images that come in templates, like stubs, notuseful, incorrect title, and more. :/
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:58, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Let me get this straight. Why was the EditCount extension imported, which doesn't really help the wiki, but you don't want to add this, which does??
Also, according to JSO, one of the reasons we switched to the Google search is this:
Default Google
track search stats? Cross.png Check.jpg
and use them for improving the wiki? Cross.png Check.jpg

Now you don't want to help the wiki??
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 17:13, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

You should speak in a nicer way :/
Well, I haven't seen the search stats helping the wiki either, but as I can't see the statistics anyway, it'd be sort of hard to tell :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 01:45, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm got annoyed. :(
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:01, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
We aren't getting very far here. So far, reasons to do it: Get more pictures, pages look better. Reasons not to: None. Sooooo... unless someone can think of a reason not to add it, then I don't see why not.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 18:16, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Actually, it might glitch a little because of stub templates and others, but...
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:26, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok, ok. cool down. Find a link to the exact extension you want.
JSO (talk | contribs) 13:50, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't think the one that is wanted is there.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:25, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes, someone may have to do some coding.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:45, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I honestly don't have the feeling 'Pages Without Files' is going to help the wiki so much that it deserves spending hours and hours of coding to it. But ofcourse, when anyone feels like it: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Developing_extensions Feel free! I'll be offline from now until july, I have exams to do.
JSO (talk | contribs) 15:33, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, isn’t some simple PHP that just checks if it has an tag in the source, from
through
. Right?

Scimonster (talk | contribs) 18:21, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Well, it won't happen then. Make a decision.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 18:24, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Fine, I'll try. ^^
BTW, is the "Learn it. Write it." PHP's motto?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:49, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Nope, I just made that up. lol
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 14:15, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
LOL. Why'd you trademark it?
Let's see if anyone will do it. :)
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:29, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Hey Scim, you should probably post in a programming or PHP forum. Few Scratch Forumer's are going to know what to do
Dazman (talk | contribs) 04:53, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't belong to any.
There are plenty of PHP coder on Scratch though.
BTW, I like sci better than Scim.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 05:00, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
You could search for one.

New TOC page: Front Page

Can we make a new TOC page, Front Page? I worked it all out right here. :D
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Cool! The only thing missing is the message bar.
BWOG (talk | contribs) 13:42, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
'Bumping' to the bottom so people will see this (actually I'm creating a section for this ^^).
I support, it's awesome :3
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:29, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
You're a bit late. :P
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Am I allowed to lower my edit count?

14,354 is too high. If I delete my user page and only restore selected revisions, it will lower it. I'll get two new ones, but I'll also get rid of many more.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:29, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Why would you want to reduce your edit count? xD
No matter how high or low it is, I don't think you should cheat it :/
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:35, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I just feel it's too high. You wished your forum post count was lower, right? (I remember XD)
Is it cheating?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 11:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Wow. You want a lower count? I like having a higher edit count because it makes me feel like I really made a difference and I was able to help out others to create this awesome wiki
Dazman (talk | contribs) 19:08, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Even if your edit count passes 9000, I wouldn't want you to change it; I want the number to say the truth :/ :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 23:48, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Sci, you're hilarious.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 19:10, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

That or he's trying to show off :P @sci: What's wrong with a high count? It's not like you edit for the sake of raising that number; that's why what you're doing is okay and good.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 11:21, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
I'm not. I want to lie to myself that I have not been doing as much as I have. XD
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 07:01, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
Well you shouldn't. I oppose.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 15:30, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, I won't.

Some links from the main page

In the headers, can we link to where it's embedded from?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 19:35, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Why is that needed?

JS variables

This is in the page source:

I don't understand it all, but most of them are probably variables. Can we use them, maybe to make a username variable? I tried, both in a sandbox and a JS page, but it didn't work. :( :/ Can it be done?
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 10:39, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

There is a username variable there, wgUserName.
Veggieman001 (talk | contribs) 15:58, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
I know that. It didn't report "Scimonster" when I tried though.
Scimonster (talk | contribs) 16:52, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

On here, you can see that people disagree with such a variable because of caching concerns. There is a "user posting" thing that can be added to Parser.php, but that's different.
