How can I take input for templates?
Resolved (since an unknown date) |

I'm making a what/why template for redirections, something like that... but I need to take input, like:
{{whatwhy|what=Redirected|why=Not provided.}
In the template:
{{{What}}}
{{{Why}}}
How can I do that?

- I looked at the template help page. It turned out I did it correct.

"Scratch Contributors (disambiguation)" page?
Resolved (since 14:50, 5 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
I recently spoke with jvvg who thought that adding a disambiguation for the page Scratch Contributors was a good idea. That article is mainly about people who've made significant contributions to Scratch. However, I was thinking of having a disambiguation that shows all areas of Scratch you can contribute (ex. SDS, SWC, FPC, etc.). Thoughts? (I originally posted this on the page's discussion page, but never got a response, so I thought I'd bring it up here.)

More Cross-wiki Related Extensions?
Resolved (since 18:14, 15 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
How about we add some more extensions that enhance the multi-wiki editing experience?
1. CentralAuth
This would allow a user to log into all wikis with just one password. It would also allow a user with an account on one wiki to get an account on all wikis, which may help other wikis. Username conflicts are unlikely, since all account names are linked with Scratch accounts.
2. GlobalPreferences
This would allow a user to set their preferences for all wikis, instead of having to change them all manually. Local exceptions exist, so if a user wants a setting different on one wiki, but the same for all others, they can do so.
3. GlobalWatchlist
This allows users to have one common watchlist for all wikis.
4. GlobalUserPage
By setting a userpage on a central wiki (probably twiki), a user can have a user page on all wikis they don't have a local userpage for.
5. GlobalCssjs
Allows a user to have custom CSS and custom JS for all wikis, instead of having to change it all manually.
What do you all think?
Dhuls (Talk|927 Contributions|Scratch) 00:20, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- My thoughts: 1. It's intentional that each Wiki has its own account system. We require that all contributors here be reasonably proficient in English (which we determine with the account request system), and likewise other Wikis require you be proficient in those languages. Additionally, unifying the accounts of all the Wikis would be very difficult. 2-5. This would be nice but won't work without either using CentralAuth or developing our own system to have a centralized ID, which would be possible but probably a significant amount of work (though I will bring this up with other developers for further investigation).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:13, 25 October 2021 (UTC)- Additionally, adding CentralAuth would require changes to how the account request system works (specifically how we create accounts using CentralAuth), and I don't see a way in CentralAuth to have an account selectively enabled on specific Wikis. If we can find a way to selectively enable accounts on certain Wikis, then we may be able to make this work (we would need to reprogram the account request system to create an account if one does not exist at all, and enable it on the relevant Wiki if one does already exist).
jvvg (talk | contribs) 02:20, 25 October 2021 (UTC)- bro, wikitext has list formatting

# item one #:elaboration as necessary # another
- Anyway - responding to each in turn:
- Rejected by design - you cannot be an editor on another wiki unless you are proficient in that wiki's language (as judged by their specific account request process), or are entitled to access for administrative purposes.
- I would support this if there was a way to do it without CentralAuth. If the method jvvg describes (modding both CA and CA) is the only way to make GlobalPreferences work, then it's not worth the effort. Also, most people do not have accounts on multiple wikis, and even those who do typically visit a particular one the most, so the actual use cases for this are fairly limited.
- This doesn't even make sense. Different wikis have different pages. Just add the pages to your local watchlists.
- This is similar to GlobalPreferences in that it's a nice-to-have but unlikely to be worth the effort given the difficulty and limited use cases.
- Same as above, but even more limited use cases since few people on these wikis use user CSS/JS.
- I do appreciate the ideas, and the extensions are quite useful on sites like Wikipedia which freely welcome cross-wiki contribution, but we are not Wikipedia and we segregate the languages much more strongly. I don't really see these extensions being added any time soon.

New Article about Database Works
Resolved (since 14:11, 27 October 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
There should be an article regarding the database works (where the Scratch Team moved the comment database between servers) on the Wiki. I think it should be located at Database Works. Hope I was helpful for y'all.
EddyTheFox12 (talk | contribs) 16:43, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think it's all that notable (in the end from an end-user perspective nothing changed and the disruption was fairly short-lived). In my opinion, it's worth a mention in Scratch Timeline and maybe Comment (website feature) but not its own article.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:53, 25 October 2021 (UTC)- This article is not going to be created anytime soon. The so-called "database works" also happens in the Wiki, but not even all of them worth mentioning. (notable ones usually go to their respective articles with regards to the related topic) For example, we also often do not record when the Scratch website was down, and don't have a separate page for that.

Proposal for quick FAQ links
Resolved (since 00:19, 28 October 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
We have a lot of FAQ pages on the wiki and all of them have pretty long names. Since they're FAQs and definitely do get linked around a lot, I was thinking that we could have a quick link for FAQ pages. For example, What happens if a project is false reported? can be made as FAQ:FR. It's definitely much more memorable and easier to link.
We can also have another category for these links too: Category:FAQ Shortcuts. What do you all think?
12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 17:59, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- I support this, it would make linking these a lot easier on the forums. A few others that might be useful would be FAQ:UNBAN for How do users get unbanned?, FAQ:SIG for How are forum signatures changed?, etc.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:15, 25 October 2021 (UTC)- I also support this idea because it would be easier to link to them. Also, I created a page in my userspace with my suggestions for shortcuts for most of the FAQ pages (some can be changed, added or removed if needed).
Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs) 07:07, 26 October 2021 (UTC)- +1
ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 18:23, 26 October 2021 (UTC)- Also, if this suggestion were to happen, I think a few shortcut creations and them being marked on their corresponding FAQ pages could happen gradually over a few days to release strain and clogging on Recent Changes.
Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs) 06:59, 27 October 2021 (UTC)- It doesn't have to happen immediately. I do think that some sort of agreement must come before adding a shortcut to a page because there could be various different names used instead. We can use Jammum's list as a place to get started though.

jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:41, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- How will we go about this? Will there be a discussion about the name for different FAQ pages? Or do we just start converting the FAQs to their shortcuts based on Jammum's list? We can also move his list to a mainspace (or FAQ?) as a list of all the shortcuts and their paired page.
12944qwerty Talk Contribs Scratch 18:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)- I think just start creating them. Honestly there isn't much discussion to be had.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 19:52, 27 October 2021 (UTC)- Ok, I see a bunch of shortcuts already created. Yay!
- Also, should we use the {{shortcut}} template for the shortcuts?
- And another idea I randomly had, should the regular faq pages go to the FAQ space as well? Since they're "FAQs" as well?

Hi everyone. On the Wiki footer, under Legal, the second link (Disclaimers). It leads to a German Wiki page, which, using the limited German I know & some help from Google Translate, is the Terms of Use page for the de-wiki. Not sure if this is a bug, or intentional. Could an admin respond to this? Thanks!
KangaCoder talk • contribs • profile 19:09, 7 November 2021 (UTC)
- This is intentional. The terms of use are legally binding and since the legal owner of the Wiki is German, the legal documents (also including our privacy policy and a few other things) are also in German. If we provided a translation in English it would have to come with the disclaimer that it is only for informational purposes and not legally binding, with the German version remaining legally binding (the Scratch Terms of Use comes with a similar disclaimer saying that the English version is legally binding with any other languages being for informational purposes only). The reason we do not have a non-legally binding English translation at all is that nobody has translated it into English at all.

"Long page" template
Resolved (since 18:18, 12 November 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Maybe there should be a long page warning template that will appear on huge pages like List of Block Workarounds. I think this will be helpful. The template could be located at Template:Long page. (When this problem will resolved, we'll try to create the template page.)
EddyTheFox12 (talk | contribs) 11:48, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
- How would this be helpful? Telling a user that a page is long doesn't really add anything. Warning them would basically discourage them from viewing that page.
KangaCoder talk • contribs • profile 14:30, 12 November 2021 (UTC)- But some wikis use such a template. You know, extremely complex wiki pages can cause performance issues if you have slow Internet connection. Well, maybe.
EddyTheFox12 (talk | contribs) 15:36, 12 November 2021 (UTC)- By the time the user is opening a page, it's too late to warn them in terms of performance issues, so it won't help in that regard. I also don't really see any other value in warning users about long pages, they'll be able to tell pretty quickly how long a page is in terms of difficulty reading, and if a page is just a lot of text it won't cause performance issues anyway (list of block workarounds uses scratchblocks which involves a lot of client-side logic which is the main reason it's a fairly slow page). And, as wangat said, this will discourage users from viewing pages simply because they are long. (Side note: I expressed support for splitting up the list of block workarounds but the community consensus was not to do so)
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:44, 12 November 2021 (UTC)- Well, I guess long page template will be completely useless on the Scratch Wiki. I feel like I came here just to annoy you, Scratch Wiki contributors. But this is already Done (or isn't it?).

Question
Resolved (since 07:41, 26 November 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Im wondering if I can add a page with a list of some disrespectful scratchers that have thousands of reports yet have not been banned. I think it will help because it would make more scratchers find out about them and report them, so that ST can ban them for being disrespectful. PS they were disrespectful because they were impersonating others and leaking stuff that the actual people begged to not be leaked.
Thanks!
Joshua-ballesteros (talk | contribs) 05:41, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
- Such list would not be allowed because its main purpose would be to 'name and shame' or gossip about other Scratchers. Also, because such list would include Scratchers with "thousands of reports", this would be impossible because only the Scratch Team has access to report data and would refuse to disclose it to anyone else. Therefore, anything on the list would be completely speculative and unverifiable.
- Overall, such list would be breaking the "Help keep the site friendly" part of the Community Guidelines, especially the part saying not to be "spreading rumors about other people’s behavior".

LokiBlaster | Talk Page | Contributions 18:48, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- It is technologically impossible to delete MediaWiki accounts
- It is also legally impossible to delete Scratch Wiki accounts for copyright reasons
- As such, the most we can do is permanently lock your account to ensure you never have access to it
So if you wish to exercise your GDPR rights in that regard, take a look at our privacy policy and/or disclaimer, but just know that there's not much we can do.

My user warning templates
Resolved (since 01:17, 6 January 2022 (UTC)) |
---|
I made some user warning templates that you can use on talk pages of users who break the rules.
CodeLearnerSai (talk | contribs) 00:57, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
- First of all, the block templates wouldn't be allowed, since
- Only bureaucrats can block, making this pointless for others
- If it goes on the talk page, it will break Scratch's Community Guidelines
- MediaWiki allows specifying block reasons (that's what $2 is).
- Second of all, is there any reason we need this. Other than "Wikipedia uses this"?
- Third, we don't need 4 warning templates for vandalism. In that case, we only need one. Same goes for some other things.
- Fourth, would it kill the mods to type messages each time? These things happen rarely.
- Fifth, your exposing the block appeal address. This exists for a reason, and MediaWiki:BlockedText uses it, another point for it.
Dhuls (Talk|927 Contributions|Scratch) 02:33, 11 December 2021 (UTC)- Just to put other reasons in addition to those that Dhuls have pointed out before me are that we don't have enough amount of vandalism to justify the usage of those templates (as a plus of being a approved-users-only wiki), and I am pretty sure that the admins block the vandals on sight instead of waiting them to stop.
ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 18:28, 11 December 2021 (UTC)- In addition, we do not publicize blocks, and generally we prefer to try to hide that they even happened. Using block templates would defeat this purpose.
- Also, please do not give out email addresses without permission, especially if they're not your own. That's against the Community Guidelines. (The email you put in your templates wasn't even the correct one.) We don't keep the appeals email private just because we like to be secretive.
- Some corrections to what others have said:
- Dhuls, they were suggesting messages to post on talk pages, not new content for MediaWiki:Blockedtext.
- Ahmetlii, we do tend to warn vandals before blocking, but if it's clear they're ignoring the warning or blatantly disregarding it then we move to a swift block.
- Thank you for taking the time to make these, but I'm afraid they will not be used.

- If all you want to do is add hover text, it's very simple, but that shouldn't be done in mainspace articles since a user wouldn't know to hover over it for more information. We do have a few other pages that have a fancy underline and show a question mark cursor when hovering over something (for example, giving a definition or an expansion of an acronym), but I can't actually find any at the moment, so please let me know of any examples so I can see if we already have a template for that.

MediaWiki Vulnerability
Resolved (since 03:46, 20 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Hi everyone,
A vulnerability has been discovered in MediaWiki that bypasses permission checks for some actions and allows editing any page without proper permission. We have added the recommended configuration settings to patch this vulnerability, but we also do plan on upgrading to MediaWiki 1.35.5 fairly soon to be on the safe side. At this time I don't know exactly when this will happen, but minor version upgrades usually only result in a few minutes of downtime (if that).
All this being said, I audited our server access logs and have not found any indications that this Wiki has been attacked using this vulnerability.
For more information, see the MediaWiki announcement.
Thank you to apple502j for bringing this to our attention.

Update on Arc CDN
Resolved (since 07:01, 20 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Several months ago, we incrementally rolled out (and then fully enabled) Arc CDN in the hope that users would see page speed-ups and that we could make some money on the side.
That hasn't happened. We have no way of measuring cache times, but I at least haven't seen a significant speed-up. Additionally, the promise of money seems to have entirely been a scam: as of 2021-12-20T05:45:00Z, we have $167.9 "ready to pay out", none of which actually has been.
This loss of trust led us to investigate Arc further, and what we found did not please us. First off, their website does not list a privacy policy, terms of use, or any other legal document. There also seems to be no evidence of their presence at the address they list on their website (though that may just be Google Maps not updating), plenty of complaints on various forums about lack of payouts, and just general lack of credibility all round.
As such, we have disabled Arc, and since it left behind a JavaScript service worker, we have also added a script to MediaWiki:Common.js to clear that worker. This should eventually clear it from everyone, but out of an abundance of caution, we recommend clearing all of your English Scratch Wiki cookies and logging in a fresh session. That is the only surefire way to ensure Arc no longer runs anything on your browser when you visit the Wiki.
Thank you for your patience, and apologies for misplacing your trust. To the best of our knowledge, the mistake has been repaired, and user data shouldn't have been affected, but we are continuing to investigate further and will report back as necessary.

Is moving Scratch Wiki accounts supported yet?
Resolved (since 07:46, 27 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Although I haven't used Scratch in a while, I took the time today to clean up some of my Internet accounts, including moving them all to a new email. I came by my accounts here on the wiki, and I would like to check in on this matter:
One of the rules of requesting a Scratch Wiki account is, Your account can't be for an alternate Wiki account.
This means that if I attempted to request an account from a second Scratch account that I own, my request would be rejected immediately.
I then thought about another way to request how to move my Scratch Wiki registration under a different username. Before I stumbled upon the community portal though, I came across a notice on Special:RequestAccount with a message along the lines of:
If you move accounts on Scratch, you will have to keep the username you input here for the rest of your Wiki days. We do not support moving accounts. Choose wisely!
Now, that really disappointed me because the current username is from my initial registration on Scratch when I was younger, and I have since grown and the username Scrunchy1
does not appear on any of my primary internet accounts anymore, and I've since wished to relinquish it entirely from my accounts online, everywhere.
Returning today after I have been sorting through my accounts to clean them up, I revisited the Scratch Wiki today and am reminded of this untied loose end that I'd like to see if I could do away with it. Today, the sentence from the blockquote above is no longer visible on Special:RequestAccount. I am now questioning whether this policy has therefore changed, and so I can request that my Scratch Wiki registration be moved to a new Scratch Account.
Could this be clarified?
Scrunchy1 (talk | contribs) 05:14, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for posting. Even though that message is no longer present on Special:RequestAccount, the policy has remained (mostly) unchanged. While we now have the technical capability to rename accounts, it will not be done unless an account's corresponding Scratch account has been renamed by the Scratch Team. Thank you for understanding, and feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Extended confirmed user access level and protection level.
Resolved (since 17:13, 20 December 2021 (UTC)) |
---|
Some pages that jvvg protected were to EWs and Admins only and that is too restrictive. An EW should also be extended confirmed to edit an extended confirmed protected page. This right should be automatically given to accounts that are 75 days old and have made at least 500 edits.
CodeLearnerSai (talk | contribs) 02:11, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, first of all we are not Wikipedia, so we don't have a "extended confirmed" role either (and plus it would be stupid given our non-anonymous wiki, role system and rules). Second: most of the EW+ protected pages are - for obvious reasons like vandalism and high-traffic pages - Wiki Wednesday pages (which are only protected for a month), or template/MediaWiki pages which may affect the entire wiki on a case of vandalism. Also, the admins have the right to exercise EW+ protection on a case of edit warring, or something else not mentioned in this paragraph. After all, the EWs are the "trusted and elected" members of this community whose are also trusted to not going to vandalize pages and abuse their rights, and the role system is also not a status symbol.
- ... of course, you may be right about that the amount of the active EWs and admins are not enough as the wiki has grown over time and some of them retired, but that's a different topic.

How Do You Give Credit For a Tutorial?

Happy New Year!
Resolved (since 00:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)) |

Hello,
I'd just like to wish everyone a happy new year and thank you all for your contributions to the Scratch Wiki in 2021. However you contribute to the wiki, be it by writing articles, fixing typos, welcoming new users, or something else entirely, your contributions are necessary and valued. The English wiki had over five million pageviews in 2021, and even though it can be hard sometimes to see the impact your contributions make, I hope that number puts things into perspective.
It's a wonderful thing that we've been able to continue building such a useful and substantial resource about Scratch, and that wouldn't have been able to happen without the collaboration of all our contributors. I'd also like to extend my thanks to Martin Wollenweber and the other Experienced Wikians, administrators, and bureaucrats for keeping this show on the road.
Let's make 2022 a great year for the Scratch Wiki!
P.S.: Thank you to Kenny2scratch for telling me the number of pageviews!

- What can I suggest?
You can suggest any image(s) on the English Scratch Wiki that have not been featured previously.
- How do I tell if an image has already been featured?
It will have the {{featured}} template on it, shown as a star icon in the top right corner of the image page.
- Is there a limit to the number of images I can suggest?
No. However, please don't suggest too many...

January 2022 Experienced Wikian Election
Resolved (since 00:02, 27 January 2022 (UTC)) |
---|
Hi everyone,
This is an announcement I'm sure many of you have been eagerly awaiting. On behalf of all of the Wiki administration, I would like to announce that we will be hosting the January 2022 Experienced Wikian elections.
The election procedure will be the same as the past few elections, with one significant change: the voting software will be hosted on-wiki with a custom extension I am currently building rather than off-site. For those not aware, the process is follows, with more details on the election information page:
- Any user who has over 50 mainspace edits as of when I make this announcement and whose Wiki account was created before December 4, 2021 may nominate themselves
- After nominations close, the existing Wiki administration will choose who we believe are suitable candidates to run in the election
- The chosen candidates will have an opportunity to write speeches
- Wiki contributors will be given an opportunity to vote
- Any user whose account was created before this announcement was made and is not currently banned on the Wiki may vote
- Voting will use the Borda count system, where each voter ranks the candidates in order of preference
The important dates are (all times at midnight UTC, or 7pm Scratch Time - click the link to see in your local time) on the beginning of that day:
- Thursday, January 6: Nominations open
- Thursday, January 13: Nominations close, candidates will be announced, and candidates will have a week to write speeches
- Thursday, January 20: Voting opens
- Thursday, January 27: Voting closes and results are announced
This post will also be updated with more details, including the processes for nomination and voting, as we set things up. Please respond to this topic if you have any questions.
I would also like to re-emphasize that this election is being held solely because the existing Wiki administration has determined that we need to augment our staff. I have received a number of questions about when the next election will be and suggestions that we have one immediately; those were not considered. Additionally, the fact that it has been a long time since we had the last election was not considered. Finally, I would like to emphasize again that becoming an Experienced Wikian is not simply a reward or a "next step" for productive Wiki contributors; it is a necessary role to operate the Wiki. Similarly to how the United States only has one president despite having a large number of people who would likely be qualified for that role, we only have a few EWs. For a slightly sarcastic Q&A about this, see this essay I wrote a while back in response to these questions.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 15:28, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Nominations are now open until Thursday, January 13. If you plan to nominate yourself to run in the election, please first review the election page and eligibility requirements. Please remember, nominating yourself does not necessarily mean you will be able to run in the election. That said, good luck to anyone who plans to nominate themselves!
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 00:00, 6 January 2022 (UTC)- Hello! I'd just like to remind everyone that nominations close at 00:00 UTC on Thursday, January 13, which is on Wednesday, January 12 at 7 PM in Scratch Time. No further nominations will be accepted after that point. If you are planning to nominate yourself, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing the cutoff time. Thank you, and good luck to those who have already nominated themselves or who plan to nominate themselves!
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 17:42, 11 January 2022 (UTC)- Hello again. Now that nominations are closed, we would like to announce who is running. We have selected Jammum (talk | contribs) and wangat (talk | contribs) to run in this election. We are also changing the voting process to account for the fact that there are only two candidates: instead of ranking them using the Borda count system, voters simply indicate whether or not you approve of each candidate (you can also abstain from voting for a particular candidate). If at least 50% of the votes for a candidate are "Yes", then that candidate will become an EW. From this, it is possible that both candidates will be elected, only one will, or that neither will be. For the candidates selected, please respond to this topic with your speeches when you get the chance (please see the election rules for the guidelines for your speech). For everyone else, voting will open a week from now (Thursday, January 20 at midnight UTC).
- We recognize that this decision may come as a surprise to some users, as we have never only selected two candidates before. This was a very difficult decision for us to make and we did not make it lightly. This is also not a disparagement of those who nominated themselves but were not selected. If you nominated yourself but were not selected, you are still welcome to nominate yourself again for the next election (we do not know at this time when it will be), and depending on the situation on the Wiki as well as your contributions at the time we may decide to select you to run at that time.

In the vector skin on Scratch Wiki Home, the Featured Images display below the News section on the left and the featured article and "The Scratch Wiki" display side-by-side at the bottom. Improvements to Scratch Wiki Home
Resolved (since 23:30, 19 January 2022 (UTC)) |

The front page of the wiki has some optimizations that could be made:
- Uncontroversial
- Linking the Scratch Cat and Gobo pictures to Scratch Cat and Gobo (done)
- Replacing all permanent images with SVG versions (File:Scratch Cat-cropped.svg, File:Gobo.svg, File:Gobo TOC.svg) (partially done - Scratch Cat and Gobo have been updated, but other images, such as the ones in the TOC, still can be changed)
- Linking the "Scratch Website" image in the TOC to Project:Table of Contents/Front Page instead of /Website (done)
Possibly controversial - Removing the period after "Made by Scratchers, for Scratchers"
- Linking "Scratchers" in that line
- Increasing the size of "Scratch Wiki" at the top
- Balancing the size of the Scratch Cat and Gobo better (done)
- Possibly make the April Fools page useful for users who want to read the wiki (instead of seeing April Fools content). I feel like the April Fools page has been overdone, and reducing the "craziness" would help.
Any thoughts and suggestions?

- My thoughts:
- 1. Support. If users click on the images, it would be more informative to send them to the article about the image, rather than a possibly confusing file page.
- 2. Support.
- 3. This is already implemented; I'm pretty sure.
- 4. Neutral; with the period, it makes the sentence look less like a motto and more like a statement. However, currently as it is, it isn't doing any harm.
- 5. No support. That would kind of defeat the "look" of the motto if we interwikied one Scratcher word and not the other.
- 6. Neutral. Considering that the article page (which is pretty large) says "Scratch Wiki Home", I don't think it's necessary to make the text larger.
- 7. Support. The current format kind of makes the page look like it's leaning to the right.
- 8. Neutral. I'm not sure what you mean by "for users who want to read the wiki". They likely would be trying to read an actual article, not an AF page.

New Wikipedia link template
Resolved (since 23:14, 26 January 2022 (UTC)) |
---|
There are many links to Wikipedia on the Scratch Wiki. However, most of them are in the format [[wikipedia:Page title|Page title]]
. It would be helpful to have a template, Template:W, which would make linking to Wikipedia much easier. There also could be another parameter for pages in Wikipedia with subtitles in parentheses. For example, [[wikipedia:String (computer science)|string]]
could become {{t|string|computer science}}.

New Wiki icon proposal

Hi everyone,
The base Scratch Wiki logo hasn't changed much since its creation in 2013. That's because it's never needed to. However now, with the new dark theme, the current logo doesn't look all that great on dark theme.
The dark theme topic tracks other visibility issues, but this one is a more significant change so I'm posting about it here.
Old logo:
New logo:
(If this change is accepted, these two files will become the same.)
Opinions?

Account Requests and different Scratch Username
I go by different usernames on this Wiki (Jammum, which still has a corresponding Scratch account functionally separate than my current Scratch account) and Scratch (SausageMcSauce). Now that I have been elected as an EW, and I will be checking account requests, I might have to mention every time I comment on a user's Scratch profile that my Wiki username is Jammum and not SausageMcSauce (I think a very small amount users might search up User:SausageMcSauce on the wiki, which does not exist). Apart from that, can mentioning my username in comment be the only allowed way to prevent confusion that I do not use the same username on Scratch and the Wiki?
(Note: I am not requesting a username redirect in the red-link above right now, I am only asking if it being created would be allowed or not)
Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs) 17:56, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- I think you do have a good point, although, as you've said, only a few users might search up your "new" account. Therefore, they may ask you why your account "doesn't exist". Since, as you pointed out, there would only be a few instances of this, I don't really think it would be necessary to create another account for yourself.
KangaCoder talk • contribs • profile 20:35, 27 January 2022 (UTC)- The short answer to that question, is no.
- There are many examples in the past, for example User:Kaj which was deleted due to fact that it's not being a real, registered user on this wiki. Of course, it's normal to have a defense against that: "But I have a Wiki account." However, there still are cases where the user has a Wiki account but then changes their name on Scratch and then tries to redirect their new username into old one (for example take this as an example). Also, having an account doesn't guarantee to have another page under a different username, and even the Wiki rules clearly forbids another account, as it'd be sockpuppeting.
- Even if that would be considered a legit reason by some, this should have required prior consent of the rest of Wiki administration. To quote Scratch Wiki:Become a contributor/Admin Guide (I am aware that the topic is not about creating a new account but as an example):
“ |
|
” |
- Hence, in conclusion, my personal opinion is that another userpage under another Scratch username other than the main one that was in use on the Wiki shall not be allowed, based on prior applications of the rule and the reasons aforementioned above. Of course, I believe that an administrator/bureaucrat should have given the final explanation and result on this case, not me (so please don't take my opinion as the final result and don't comment solely based on it). I've just expressed my opinion.
ahmetlii Talk Contributions Directory 21:23, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

- I've talked to the other EWs and admins about this and we think that it would be preferred for you to use your Jammum account on Scratch to handle account requests if you still have access to it. This would help avoid confusion, since on the pages of account requests you handle, your username will show as "Jammum." Do you still have access to that account and do you feel comfortable using it?
bigpuppy talk ▪︎ contribs 22:03, 27 January 2022 (UTC)- I think the password for Jammum is still accessible, but the things still on that account (my userpage states I unshared every project on it some time ago) are too 'cringy' for me to look at (it's nothing not allowed on Scratch, just things involving some groups of users who participated in some 'remix chains') and I would not be able to see any replies to users who comment on account-handling comments when I am logged in as SausageMcSauce.
- I think because of above discussions, a userspace redirect will never happen, so I might have to mention on my current Scratch account's profile that I am Jammum on the Scratch Wiki and in comments, if that would still be fine.
Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs) 07:19, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
If a user capitalises every first letter in a word / uses Start Case in their request notes, is that alone a reason for rejecting an account request?
Jammum (💬 Talk - ✍️ Contribs) 16:01, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- S:CONTRIB states the following:
“ | Remember that you are joining the Wiki. Please use complete sentences with proper English spelling and grammar in your request notes. | ” |
- Scratch Wiki:Become a contributor/Admin Guide states the following:
“ | Do the request notes use proper grammar? (if the grammar has major mistakes, fully reject, but otherwise it isn't that much of an issue as long as it doesn't affect the meaning) | ” |
- If, after taking into account the above quotes, you feel that capitalizing every word is an egregious enough mistake to warrant rejection, then reject.

Hello everyone! It's time to decide on featured images for March. If you have any suggestions, please leave them below.

TheTrillion • Talk • 2,624 contributions • Scratch 05:44, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- It depends on the context. For the first paragraph in an article when introducing it always use text (since we have the infobox to the right to show it). When including them in a list, use block form. When mentioning inline, generally use block form unless it seems like it's getting excessive or overly distracting.

Scratch Tip of the Day
Resolved (since 05:06, 1 March 2022 (UTC)) |

In the future (when there's hundreds of tips), how would you check to make sure a tip isn't a duplicate?
I'm asking this here since I'm not sure if I'm allowed to create a talk page for it.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 02:18, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hmmm, good question. I think you could probably just search for keywords related to the tip using CTRL-F/CMD-F in the editor. For instance, if the tip was about the fill bucket tool in the paint editor, you might search "fill bucket" to see if there are already tips containing that term, and if so, if the tip you're planning to add is already present. It's not a perfect solution, and some duplicates might fall through the cracks, but they can just be removed when they are found. Does that make sense?
- By the way, just for the future, it would be fine to create the project's talk page. Thank you for your concern, however!

Programmer204 (talk | contribs) 15:36, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
- To become an EW, you'll have to run in the next election. The date of that hasn't been announced yet, but unfortunately, since the last one was a month ago, it will probably be at least a year. Keep in mind that elections are only held when needed, so it might take more or less time than that. Also, you should add ~~~~ after your posts to sign them.
Jackson49 (talk | contribs) 14:10, 3 March 2022 (UTC)- The next election will most likely not happen until a few years later (and even if there was one now, the OP would not be eligible to participate in one). I might consider the user's wish to be an EW right now rejected.

Interesting question regarding talk pages

---|
Should a talk page always have a corresponding non-talk page? I'm just asking because I need to know.
EddyTheFox12 (talk | contribs) 15:06, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- In general, yes. However, there are a few exceptions. The biggest one is archives, but also occasionally a discussion may need to be split off into its own page, or a user may want their talk page to have subpages for specific topics. However, in all of these cases, the special talk pages are subpages of a talk page that does have a real page. Additionally, every user has a talk page (or at least could have one created at any point when someone creates a message), but they are not required to have a userpage.
jvvg (talk | contribs) 16:44, 3 March 2022 (UTC)- I'm just asking because I got an amazing idea to divide my talk page into several topics to make something that resembles the forums. But well...maybe I most likely shouldn't do that because this would otherwise confuse wikians who will contact me via the talk page. Or not, I'm really not sure if dividing the talk page would be a good idea...

- Could you please explain more about which page you were trying to edit? I just checked the April Fools page, and I am not seeing anything about a Scratch Cat collections of blue items.
Godslamb (talk | contribs) 16:51, 24 March 2022 (UTC)- If you mean the editor isn't showing up then click on the pencil icon in the top right of the page (If you use ScratchWikiSkin) then make your changes. After you make your edit then click on the 'Show preview' button to check your work before saving it.

Template:-

Could this template be changed from &mdash to — (the actual character), and would this have any benefits?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 18:58, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
- The template itself is for the safe substitution of it, hence replacing the HTML character code (which helps escaping the character) with the "actual" character would defeat that purpose and cause unintended problems, as well as this doesn't provide any benefits. Though I am not sure about that whether the template itself is necessary anymore, per this page about special characters. Quoting:
“ |
Ways to enter a non-ASCII character into the wikitext:
Use an HTML named character entity reference like |
” |
- I know that the same system is also used in
{{!}}
, but that's because of | being reserved for some essential functions of wikicode.

This is a very visible file that is used in many places. The Scratch Cat was modified for 3.0 (mouth now slopes up and other small tweaks). (there is an updated version at File:3.0 Scratch Cat head.svg)

Unprotect all Scratch Team articles
Resolved (since 07:30, 15 January 2022 (UTC)) |
---|
Articles that were maintained by the Scratch Team now are not, and the template has been removed from all the pages. However, many of the pages are still protected. Can someone unprotect them so users can improve them?

This article is very outdated (and protected because it is the Wiki Wednesday article). Is it possible to temporarily unprotect it so it can be updated?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 00:59, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- We need to ensure the article remains in a stable condition, so unfortunately we can't unprotect it for the remainder of this month. However, you can make a copy in your sandbox and if you believe it is in publishable condition, get back to us here and we can replace the contents with that.

The image for the Tutorials section is simple and can easily be replaced with an SVG. Can someone replace it with File:Gobo TOC.svg? (feel free to make changes to the file if necessary)

In an old version of File:Extension Library.png, I did not crop out the browser and taskbar. Can this revision be hidden?

In the "Extensions" section, LEGO BOOST should be between Ev3 and WeDo, instead of at the end.

Grammar mistake in Special:Search
Resolved (since 04:49, 24 January 2022 (UTC)) |
---|
When a user searches something, if a page with the searched title exists, it will say "There is a page named 'Page title' on this wiki. See also the other search results found." However, "see also" is incorrect - it should be "Also see the other search results".
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 00:47, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- MediaWiki issue. Wikipedia somehow avoids this (by removing that bit of text entirely), though I've seen no way how to change it.
- Also, I checked that piece of text and only one grammar checker says it's incorrect.

Merge history

I merged the pages Turn Left () Degrees (block) and Turn Right () Degrees (block) into Turn () Degrees (blocks). However, most of the new page's history is at User:CrazyBoy826/Turn () Degrees (blocks) because of a copy-and-paste page split. Can the page history be merged?
CrazyBoy826 | Talk | 8,242 edits | Scratch 01:23, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Done, but next time please don't move a mainspace page into userspace. Ask for an admin to delete the destination if you need to fiddle with redirects. (Also, I believe regular users are able to overwrite redirects when moving).
kenny2scratch Talk Contribs Directory 00:44, 14 March 2022 (UTC)- Normal users can't overwrite redirects with more than one revision (otherwise we could delete any page by first making it a redirect). The page with edit history was blocking the destination of the move, and it would be very confusing for readers if they see a delete template (and they wouldn't be able to find the content).

(I was late to do this)
Some time ago, I created an archive of my talk page. I have just read the help page and it says to request protecting. Could this be done?
