scratchblocks version parameter

Yes Done
I was thinking we should have a version parameter for scratchblocks so that we could see what they looked like in previous versions of Scratch. This would be useful for articles that cover previous versions of Scratch.
Example: <scratchblocks version="2.0"></scratchblocks>
1a3c5e7g9i's Armemedillo 1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 20:40, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

I definitely support! When we were moving to 3.0 I originally thought that we would keep the old sb extension and just change the tag to "scratchblocks2" (or something like that), and make a new one for 3.0 and it would have a "scratchblocks" tag.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 20:52, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
I definitely agree! Having this would be better for the old 2.0 pages. +1 :D
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  21:59, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Support! I do think we should also be able to view what the old blocks look like, because it might be useful in some situations (who knows?).
NilsTheBest (talk | contribs) 02:22, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Be careful: Long comment. Nutshell: too hard to implement
This is apple502j, the one who made ScratchBlocks4 extension. I know what you need, and it's nice. I'd wanted to make it possible to install both (2.0 version and 3.0 version) version to MediaWiki, but it was too hard to do so.
Old scratchblocks (Old for short) and new scratchblocks (New for short) uses the same global(window.) variable name. If you install Old first and New second, Old's JS variable is gone, and vise versa. I tried to solve the problem by replacing the name of New JS with a simple Python script, but it didn't work well. Without the script, we had to manually change it, which is also too hard. To make ScratchBlocks4 available earlier, I had to cut the feature.
Old and New also use the same identifier inside MediaWiki. This was a bit easier than that JS one.
While it's possible to beg tjvr, it would still need time. For this reason, I think it's hard to implement.
Logo of Apple502j.jpg Apple502j Talk/Activities 2,243edit 06:54, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
I support! Now I know it's hard to implement, but it becomes easier if we accept a tradeoff: each article can only have one scratchblocks version. That way there aren't any name conflicts and it'll still work fine. I'll look into it later.

I was thinking that each version of scratchblocks should be stored in a different global variable (new idea made from Apple502j's explanation), but your idea sounds more practical!
1a3c5e7g9i's Armemedillo 1a3c5e7g9i(Talk|Contributions) 02:05, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Scratchblocks already allows you to render either in Scratch 2 or Scratch 3 style, so possibly you could make that feature available? https://github.com/scratchblocks/scratchblocks/releases (That page also explains how to scale scratchblocks to 67.5%, I suppose you mean to fix that soon?)
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 08:14, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
We already scale scratchblocks to that size, but with a different method, because the method on that page doesn't take into account that the space taken up remains unchanged (it was designed for the scratchblocks.github.io page).
You have a point! We don't need to include different versions of scratchblocks to render different versions of Scratch! I'll get to it right away.

Hi, nice to know you're engaged in this wiki!
I noticed that you made a lot of edits for this, which is fine, but it takes more work for admins to patrol them. To avoid this in the future, you can use the show preview button at the bottom.
I also noticed how you formatted you links. I'm glad that you used the internal link format, but you didn't have to rename it. |NAME]] (that part). As long as you inputted the link where you want to go, and its not named to something else. (for example, cheatsheet, look inside). You also included a '/'. This will bring the link to the subpage of the current page. It will most likely bring you to a non-existent page. Look inside if you don't know how to fix the link for the answer.

Moving domain of special-case wikis

Yes Domains changed

Hello everyone,

I’ll get right to the point. Currently, there are three "special case" Wikis, which have domains according to scratch-*.info instead of *.scratch-wiki.info. These cause several problems:

  • Links to them in Scratch comments aren’t clickable
  • People keep asking why those domains are special
  • Code linking to those wikis has to be duplicated

On the GitHub issue I linked above, LiFay suggested moving the special cases to normal domains, and having the “special case” domains redirect to the normal ones. I think this is a good idea, but we need more discussion on it first. Moving it:

  • Solves all the problems above
  • Makes things consistent

However, it also:

  • Needs redirecting

What are your thoughts? Should we move, or no? What else is there to consider?
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
06:02, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

The special-domains of those wikis only have historically reasons and so I vote for moving them to the domains with the same structure as all others while additional making them fully accessible under their historic domains.
Mtwoll logo.jpg MartinWollenweber  Talk  Contribs  Directory
15:07, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
I agree to MartinWollenweber but technically,it's very hard(because that means clon the Wikis) and clon the Wikis mean more memory and more technical problems. Therefore, this isn't a good idea but special cases are historical signature of the Wikis,so I suggest if a Wiki has a special domain,we can move all files to special domain and we can close standart domains for that wiki or we can remove all special domain. This is a hard problem.
Ahmetlii (talk | contribs) 08:42, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
I think you misunderstand - we're not cloning the wikis; we are only making one domain point to the other. (It's like putting down two road signs - one says "de.scratch-wiki.info" and the other says "scratch-dach.info" but the other points you to the one.) The main concerns are really just the redirects. And our decision needs to take everyone else into account! Are you for or against?

Changes to Compliment Tuesday?

I'm a big fan of motivating things like "Compliment Tuesday" but couldn't it be more effective, if we decrease the times per year say down to 4 or 2? It's more motivating honored and to be honored rarely by manny than often by just a few...
Mtwoll logo.jpg MartinWollenweber  Talk  Contribs  Directory
06:26, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

I'm on board with that, currently we do Compliment Tuesday, every Tuesday, when there is four or more compliments. Though doing it every 6 months seems too far apart, but if we do it once a month, say the first Tuesday of the month, it's often enough that I don't forget, ;) but not too often that it is not that effective. What do you think?

Ideapad-320 (talk | contribs) 16:14, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

That template was never used on that bot's page (Plus, the bot was only used to replace WikiMonitor temporarily) (and as a reminder Ideapad, please use proper spelling and grammar on the wiki, this is a "professional" wiki).
Jammum (talk | contribs) 05:29, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
Tweaker was always meant to be temporary, and it never got proper bot rights nor was it ever really a bot. The link to Special:Log on its userpage was meant to show recent things it might have done. It doesn't really deserve the "I'm a bot" template.
@Jammum, your point is clear but harshly made. @Ideapad-320: Thanks for pointing it out, and I hope my reply clarifies things. Do remember that we're a professional(-ish) encyclopedia, and proper spelling and grammar in a talk page help get your meaning across better. :) But if that's too much, as long as you use proper typography in mainspace articles then that's fine (though we may misunderstand you at times).

As far as I can see, the only admins that are normally active are @ken and @jvvg and @bigpuppy (i know he isn't a admin, but he is a EW).
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  17:47, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

I agree to @12944qwerty,and the Wikis are still working. Therefore,we don't need an extra EW.If all admins and EWs need an extra admin or EW,we must respect their decisions. An election isn't seem in near future now.
Ahmetlii (talk | contribs) 18:30, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
But, the only EW that is currently active is bigpuppy, and the only admin that is active is Kenny2scratch. Most people believe that there should be at least 2 EWs and 3 Admins active about every day, but that is clearly not the case! That's why I think there should be an election.
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 21:07, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Actually Makethebrainhappy (EW) and MartinWollenweber (bureaucrat)(mtwoll) are online as well. mtwoll isn't as active though.
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  21:34, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
No, MTBH has only made two edits in the past month. That isn't active if you ask me. As for mtwoll, he is a bureaucrat, not an EW; MTwoll is actually not that active either.
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 21:55, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
MTBH is spontaneously active. I did say mtwoll is a bureaucrat. You need to remember that many of these people are in college or in jobs - they don't have much time, so the definitions of 'active' is different.
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  22:08, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
While their definitions of "active" might be different, we need multiple users of high authority to be on once a day to every three days. Having only 1 EW and 1 Admin follow this everyday is not good. That's why we need an election.
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 23:31, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── You people scare me sometimes with your prophetic power...

We (the EWs) agreed a few days ago on an election in June. I'm starting to get overwhelmed by the number of edits y'all are making - I can't patrol them all myself. Additionally, June will give us time to train the EW elects so that they're just in time to help deal with the summer traffic. However, now is not the time to discuss it (and I am putting my foot down now and specifically prohibiting talk about it until it's announced), so consider this Yes Done until June. (Also, please none of you take it upon yourselves to announce the election! You're just being a nuisance and nobody will take you seriously.)

@asqwde: I've been busy with school, which is why I haven't been on in a couple days. There are merely weeks until exams and the teachers are getting nervous. I'll have more time this coming long weekend. Besides, most of my activity is patrolling, which isn't registered on the active users page (:() and which you can't see anyway.

@NYCDOT: Nobody ever said 2 EWs and 3 admins active every day is a good number. [who?] Besides, when I do manage to find time to patrol, I do it all, which takes care of everything usually within a few days to a week. I'm fine on my own, but I expect that it'll be too much by summertime.

Great that Jakel181 and NYCDOT want to help. Perhaps it's even possible that our longtermplan for strengthen the impact of wikiwednesday comes true.
@Makethebrainhappy: Would you like to coordinate the engagement of Jakel181 and NYCDOT? You have most experiences with Wiki Wednesday so you could transfer your knowhow and refect improvement ideas. Perhaps you could even decide to have a changing responsibility "Wiki Wednesday coordinator of the month?"

Wiki Wednesday International Portal Construction Plan.png
@NYCDOT: You asked for "Wiki_Wednesday_International_Portal_Construction_Plan". Did you read all the explanations at https://test.scratch-wiki.info/wiki/Test-Scratch-Wiki_talk:Community_Portal#Wiki_Wednesday_Portal ? The picture there is not a fully replacement of the text explanation but to help to understand the text better. The smallest boxes in the picture symbolise sections or boxes, the surounding boxes symbolise pages and the outer boxes symbolise web-locations like Scratch-Website or a Wiki-Website of a certain language. The arrwos symbolise links of an entity in that section where the arrow starts to an other website/page/section/box. The concept of "teaser boxes" is allready established at the german Scartch-wiki see: de:Scratch-Wiki:Alle_Artikel_der_Woche. I hope that this helps a little bit to understand the "Wiki_Wednesday_International_Portal_Construction_Plan" better. What do you think?

Ah, that makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up. I think that's a very good idea!
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 20:06, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
I don't see this as a failure of the current system, since we've moved the dates around accordingly in the past to fit our schedules... it is true that I was to busy to write it on Wiki Wednesday, but I had it in for a possible April Wiki Weekend (last weekend in the month) which we have done when necessary. LiFay told me that she would prefer to release that newsletter in May which means that the next write-up is for June.
To make the system more robust, you would need to backup write-ups to default to in case a certain month hasn't been written. This kind of one-time effort to create a years-worth of back-ups would go a long way to reducing the risk of missing a date on our end and I would certainly appreciate support in that process if you want me to head in that direction.
To go through the points in the long-term planning post, I'll clear up how the articles are chosen. The process is decentralized, relying on language administrators to create processes to choose articles. In order to generate more PR-spinoff, the larger German and English Wikis have made community channels to recommend articles (here and here, respectfully). We then rely on the administrators to fill out a google form which I then convert into a post.
It would be great to have a portal for submissions that could automatically convert it to BBCode. I am not really sure how that could be done through an international wiki portal hosted here on the wikis (someone with a better programming perspective should comment on this).
You are also correct in saying that it would be better if we presented historical article selections in a better way to consumers (I particularly like your setup here).
The best way to make the system more reliable on a monthly basis would be to ask the administrators to fill in the form earlier. I always get the responses either the night before or day of which makes it hard for me to include everyone and keep the submission timely.
NYCDOT and Jakel, l.m.k. what part of the process you are interested in facilitating. :)

Captioning on Pictures

Yes Done Okay, so sometimes I see captions on pictures that have a period at the end and some don't. For example, on Scratch Trends, especially this section, the captions are very inconsistent. One says "An evil kumquat" and the next says "Two kumquats.". I know that if they caption is a sentence, it should have one. But the examples were both fragments (just the subject) and one was treated as a sentence and the other a phrase.

TL;DR: Should we or should we not put periods at the end of image captions that are not sentences?
EIephant Lover logo.png EIephant_Lover  Talk  Contributions  Subpages
21:11, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

I'm not sure if the style guide on Wikipedia has any information on this, but I would check there first. Personally I would leave periods off the fragements and keep them on the sentences.
Makethebrainhappy (talk | contribs) 00:37, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
I found, on actual Wikipedia, their ruling on it. I'm fully aware that the Scratch Wiki is not Wikipedia and that we shouldn't implement a rule just because Wikipedia has it, but their ruling on captioning makes perfect sense. It is here, and I think we should add it (the first two bullets under "Formatting of captions") to our style guide because it will make our captioning and things much more consistent and professional-looking.
Also, when I did the preview, the link to the Wiki page wasn't working, so here it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Captions

Yes, you don't have to ask about anything to change unless it will affect a lot of things. These include
  • Moving pages
  • merging
  • Template editing/creating in Template namespace
and etc.

Should words replacing characters that can't be used in titles be capitalized?

I renamed Chirp (Scratch Modification) to "Chirp (Scratch modification)", because S:CONVENTIONS says that words in brackets shouldn't be capitalized (except for proper names). I suppose it would be alright to do the same for the rest of the Scratch mod articles, and update the links? (Edit: Though I can't really see why the titles say that, since there is only one Chirp, Panther, Insanity, Bingo and so on.) Yes Done and thanks Ahmetlii.

S:CONVENTIONS also states that words replacing characters that can't be used in titles shouldn't be capitalized. However, neither Backdrop Number (block), Costume Number (block), nor Item Number of () in () (block) follow this rule, and I think these titles would look a bit out of place if they did so.
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 08:04, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Jammum, I assumed that bumping is okay because Lucario621 said so here (and again since then though I couldn't find it) and I haven't read anything contrary to that.

I don't get it, unless you just mean you think the casing of those titles is unimportant (and are right.)
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 08:53, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
I think what I meant was I approve of your recent moves; I however think that the current forbidden-character capitalization (the one specified against in conventions) should be the correct one; I've changed the conventions to reflect that. One word that replaces special characters is capitalized; multiple words are not. Feel free to move anything that doesn't fit that.

How do you see when a project was first shared and when it was last modified?

this custom sig thing is confusing me

ok, i made a custom sig, and i set it in preferences as the sig
however, for some reason it shows the entire text of the subpage
like ~~~~ produces

YaovIcon.png yaov / talk / contribs / scratch 23:31, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
but when editing it shows <br> yaov / talk / contribs / https://scratch.mit.edu/users/yaov_1991
so yeah, i dont know
also, in the input box on preferences the code it shows is
i cant seem to find the problem
YaovIcon.png yaov / talk / contribs / scratch 23:31, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

First:You should make a page like that: User:Example/minisig And then, you should put signature like that:Finally, you should go to the Preferences and write new page to signature and tick to "Treat signature as wikitext".Now,you can use four tildas to signature.
Note Note: You should obey grammar rules as write something.Everybody can make minor mistakes, but you should obey simple writing rules(example:capitalizing)

What is this (CP/Not done) exactly for?

Yes Done, originally on S:CPND
I clicked the "Things To Do" bar and it directed me here (CP/Not done), I don't exactly get the "What To Do" part. Can someone please tell me what the Community Portal is for? Thanks! :)
FrostyRAhAz (talk | contribs) 00:56, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

This (CP/Not done) is a page where Community Portal topics are stored if it has been marked as No Not done for 1 month or longer. The other Community Portal page is where current discussions go (its the main discussion page for the Scratch Wiki) The "What to Do" part on this page is basically to find any topics that you could share your opinions on or discuss it if necessary. (I'm pretty sure someone else could explain it more clearer)
TenType (talk | contribs) 01:06, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Okay, I get it now.

FrostyRAhAz (talk | contribs) 01:22, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Quick tip: Don't move your signature a line down from your text, otherwise it'll look floppy and out of place. For example:
::<text here>
<signature here>
should be
 ::<text here><signature here>
instead.

How can we not share our social media accounts and info?

Recently, I got my status revision reverted and deleted, because I posted my Twitter username. I remember, back when I was banned on Scratch, I posted a notice with a list of my accounts on other websites and the notice (and an Experiened Wikian's alleged response) disappeared in a flash. I would like an answer to this question.

Sharing social media accounts is against the Scratch Community Guidelines:
For safety reasons, don't give out any information that could be used for private communication - such as real last names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, links to social media sites or websites with unmoderated chat.

– Community Guidelines

They apply to the Scratch Wiki too.

June 2019 EW Election

Overview

On behalf of all the Scratch Wiki admins and EWs, I am happy to announce that the sixth Experienced Wikian elections will be held in this month of June, 2019.

You can find the most relevant information on the election page: Scratch Wiki:Elections/June 2019 and the nomination page. Visit this page to learn more about being an Experienced Wikian: Scratch Wiki:Experienced Wikians

Rationale

For a good portion of the past year, I (kenny2scratch) have been the sole active admin, with occasional help from the other admins and other EWs. Don't get me wrong - it's fun, but it's now starting to get too much - as summer approaches, more people are becoming more active, and it's becoming really difficult to patrol all the edits that are made every day. I used to be able to come home from school, have dinner, then patrol all the edits made that day before bed. That is now far from the case. I need help - hence this election.

Expectations/Hopes

EWs elected in this election should be able to dedicate a set amount of time each day to patrolling edits made that day. Though all edits from each day must be patrolled, the elects need not patrol them all by themselves. Instead, they should coordinate with myself and other admins and EWs to patrol the day's edits.

Elects should also:

  • Know the account request process well (processing account requests is what the entire EW role was created for)
  • Have a certain amount of activity per day outside of patrolling. Edits made in the course of patrolling are usually enough.
  • Know how to gently/nicely/politely correct new users' behavior
    • No: "Please remember to indent. You did not indent on User's talk page."
    • Yes: "Hi, I just saw your message on User's talk page. Your comment was rather [positive adjective], but I just want to mention that when replying to other people's posts we usually..."

Conclusion

Nominations open at 12:00 AM UTC on June 2 (which is 8pm Scratch Time on June 1). Good luck, and may the best candidates win!

NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 00:02, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
I would nominate myself, since I am active everyday and do know a lot of WikiCode, but, ehhh, I'm sort of new (I joined in March), and I think other older users deserve it more than me. So I'll definitely be there waiting for voting to start!
TenType (talk | contribs) 00:37, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── You have no obligation to restrain yourself from nominations just because you think others deserve it more! In the end, it will be the Wiki community (by voting) who decide who deserves it the most. And your age is mostly irrelevant - as long as you have the Wikian usergroup and have a good track record, you're eligible for the election, both technically and morally.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
03:56, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Also keep in mind we're not necessarily only electing one EW (notice that the election page says "new EWs will be elected")! We'll only decide on how many to elect once we see how many nominations there are.

I guess I'll give EW a shot. Thanks for the motivation!

Best of luck to all! :D
TenType (talk | contribs) 21:13, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Apologies to all - a very late rule change. In previous elections we have required 50 mainspace edits and a month-old account; the Wikian status only requires 50 edits, total. The rules have changed to fit previous elections - nominees now must have 50 mainspace edits, in addition to being a Wikian. I have updated the relevant pages accordingly - apologies if this affected you.
Kenny2scratch logo.jpg kenny2scratch  Talk  Contribs  Directory
01:13, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey, I nominated myself, but it got removed! I'm a wikian, I don't know what I did wrong?
YaovIcon.png yaov_1991 / talk / contribs / scratch 19:04, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
You need to have at least 50 mainspace edits, as stated above.
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 19:20, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

Help! I just got 50 mainspace edits and re-nominated myself 2 days ago!
MClovers (talk | contribs) 22:26, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Kenny2scratch specifically said this when he undid your nomination:
You were not eligible and you only made just enough edits to become eligible. We're likely not going to include you in the list of candidates anyway because of that so there's really no point.

– Revision 229356 summary by kenny2scratch

And also, make sure to indent after posting.
TenType (talk | contribs) 18:10, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
The rules do say "Any person who is a Wikian, has at least 50 mainspace edits, and has a good track record…may nominate themself." There mightn't be any point other than that, but all the same.
Jonathan50 (talk | contribs) 23:42, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
At this point, I think it is up to the admins to decide now, not me. I don't really agree or disagree with him being able to get nominated now.

Candidates

Nominations are closed! After much deliberation by the admins and current EWs, here is the list of candidates (in alphabetical order) in the June 2019 election:

  • apple502j
  • banana439monkey
  • jakel181
  • NYCDOT

The number of EWs we are electing this election has also been confirmed to be two.

Candidates: Start writing your speeches! Once you have written your speech and are happy with what it says, post it in a reply here. Remember that speeches must be no more than 108 words and not break any rules stated on the election page. If you like, you can post your speech multiple times - your last reply here that you mark as your official speech will be the speech displayed on the election page. You have until June 16 to write and post and/or revise your speech.

Everyone else: There's nothing for you to do right now - voting starts on June 16. Check back in a week!

Hello! I'm banana439monkey. I've been on the wiki for just over four years and have made 2300+ edits. As an active user, I read recent changes pretty much as soon as a new edit comes in, which is pretty fast. This means that I can undo malicious or/and incorrect edits before a person sees the page. Who doesn't like that squeaky clean shine? I also politely notify people who need to be reminded of the policies and guidelines while also quickly, thoroughly and efficiently patrolling edits. As for account requests, I thoroughly read request notes and have experience with ConfirmAccount. Vote efficient. Vote Banana.

Hello, I’m Jakel181, and I’d like to be your next EW! I’ve been on scratch for 3 years and on the wiki for 2 years. I’m familiar with the community; being a member of the SDS, SWC, and the Test and DACH wiki, and experienced with leadership positions; SDS Translators, and Thankful Thursday. I’m extremely familiar, with the mediawiki software, and in the past have found various securities holes in the wiki, and helped patch them up, keeping the wiki safe. If you vote for me I promise, to keep the wiki a more safe, friendly, and productive place for all. Thank you for considering me for EW.

Hiya! I’m NYCDOT, and I want to be your Experienced Wikian (EW). Currently, I always check out the recent changes to make sure every edit is helpful and constructive, and would be able to help more by actually patrolling edits. Something else I would do would be to review account requests, which will ease the stress on the current active EWs. Also, some highlights on some things I’m doing is always updating the featured studios list, keeping pages crystal clean, and finishing the special pages list, because it’s been unfinished since 2014! In conclusion, that’s why you should vote for me. Vote for a better wiki. Vote NYCDOT.

Hi, I'm apple502j, a candidate of this EW election. As I'm working as an admin on Japanese wiki, I can use my knowledge gained there, like ConfirmAccounts. I'm also Scratch developer, translator, and SDS translator. I created a bunch of articles here with my powerful English and I've been here for more than 1.5 years! I'm usually free so I have much time for patrolling, and I know how to moderate this huge website. My timezone is JST: so I can patrol when Americans are asleep. If I'm elected, I'll make here a more-friendly help website. Vote Apple and make the Wiki nicer and bigger.

You still have until the 16th (not the 23rd, as my post previously said, that was a mistake) to edit or otherwise revise your speech - remember that the last reply here that you mark as your speech (or that is otherwise obviously your speech) will be the one counted as your election speech.

Hmm, I really don't know. I sort of agree because users could change it the way it isn't supposed to be, but it wouldn't really do much, you know what I mean? I think an admin should decide.
TenType (talk | contribs) 05:14, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
If an editor creates a new Help: page, they would have to ask an admin to add it to the contents page. Plus, the Help:Contents page isn't really that high-traffic (Makethebrainhappy can enlighten you more on that) so it really doesn't need much protection.

I think it works like this:
Any pages that have "talk" in the title are considered completely seperate from the main article. If a title has no "talk" in it, its considered an article. So, basically, Talk = talk page. However, if someone needs to find it, its on the sidebar.

So decided that I should do my first real edit so I clicked the Random Page button a thew times to see if I could find a page that neeeded some edits. Right away I found this page. At first it looked like a perfect page for me! There was some bad grammar mistakes that I could fix and the blocks were a little slopy. But then I begain to test the code that was on their and half the blocks I couldn't find in the editor! Am I missing something? Was this a troll page or something? Could someone help me please?

New Template

I thought of making a template for pages with no links. I was inspired by this. I just wanted to ask if its useful. Here's the code:

{{Header Template||This page is an orphan. This means that there are currently no links on this page. If you are an editor, please add a few!<includeonly>{{check date|{}}}</includeonly><includeonly>{{#ifeq:{cat}|no||}}</includeonly>}}

YaovIcon.png yaov_1991 / talk / contribs / scratch 01:44, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

Problem is, too many pages would have the template.
01:46, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, a lot of pages would have the template, and that would be bad.
TenType (talk | contribs) 03:40, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
We have a Special:LonelyPages list already, and the fact that a page is not linked to isn't really something we need to make glaringly obvious. Anyone wanting to adopt pages can go through the special list.

If you want a custom template(for example;you saw a header and you want to use it with change the color),you must create it in your userspace. If you don't want to change something, you can use it in your userspace.
Note Note: You must use it with credit;you can change it or use it,but with credit(see:CC BY-SA 4.0).

Question about the block plug-in

How do I make a custom block using the block plug-in? I need the actual block part, not the define hat.
AjsyaSmallpfp.png ajsya  Profile | Talk | Contribs  00:57, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

A custom stack block would have :: custom behind the text. For example
<sb>jump () :: custom</sb>
would become
jump () :: custom.

Quick Question

Yes Done

Does work for EWs? For bots, admins, and bureaucrats they work:

→ 28
→ 7
→ 18

But for Experienced Wikians, I've attempted several times with different names, and they still don't work, even if I lowercase or uppercase:
→ 0 (Incorrect)
→ 0 (Incorrect)
→ 0 (Incorrect)
→ 0 (Incorrect)

Is there such thing, or am I doing it wrong?
TenType (talk | contribs) 04:50, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

The technical group name is Experienced_Wikians, but because of the way MW works, it doesn't like anything with an underscore (i.e. space) in the group, at least for the NUMBERINGROUP parser function. (The fact that we named it with an underscore was an oversight and the name was set a loooong time ago.) I don't know any good way to fix this, not without breaking many links and busting current usergroup assignments. For now, treat the number as impossible to automatically count.

Look through the history and related changes! That page is a template that is used in multiple places - it's not a templatespace template because it's not very necessary for it to be there. It definitely doesn't need to be deleted; I've just semi-protected it. Please don't edit it unless you know what you're doing because it's used in multiple pages and editing it could break things.

This page says it was deleted because it was an unneeded redirect. I don't know why that is considered unneeded. We really need to fix this

I know that this bug has already been reported in 2016 here, but this isn't a topic reporting that.

For those who are familiar with this, there is a big bug where there are "ghost" items in categories, where listed pages do not belong in the category, and sometimes the opposite occurs.

But this has gotten really bad that like 25% or more of the pages listed in popular categories aren't actually supposed to be there, for example if you go to a page in Category:Articles in Progress, and scroll down, there should be a category that says "Articles in Progress", but most of the time there actually isn't the category.

Sometimes the opposite occurs, for example, the How to Evaluate an Expression article clearly has the category "Pages with Broken Formatting", but if you actually go to Category:Pages with Broken Formatting, it says that it contains no pages or media.

This also affects special pages too. If you look in Special:UncategorizedFiles, most files in there are categorized.

Even though this has already been reported, I don't see any action that has been taken to update or fix this. New Wikians may be confused on why they are recommended to go to a category like Category:Articles to Expand, but go to Offline Editor and find out that it does not have the category.

Could this bug be fixed, or at least updated like every 2 weeks? If yes, please do it soon. I have myself also encountered many forms of this, and learned not to go into any categories to find a page to edit.
TenType (talk | contribs) 18:45, 4 July 2019 (UTC)

This can't be fixed immediately, because from what we currently know it's either slow categories or slow/crashy Wiki. I've started a discussion with the other bureaucrats, though - we'll see what we can do. We'll get back to you, but don't hope for too much.

18:28, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

TenType (talk | contribs) 19:49, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Wow, it worked! Just checked some categories and special pages; all of the pages/files that were added to a special page or a category before today that were supposed to be removed vanished!

EDIT: Also checked the pages that were supposed to be in a category/special page, that worked too!

Nice job for whoever did this (or is it automatic?)
TenType (talk | contribs) 17:40, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

@TT and Banana: By "job" I meant a cron job, actually. It's not running runJobs.php, but rather refreshLinks.php which definitively updates all categories and link lists but takes a while to run which is why I've set it to run only on some days.

@TenType: I discovered that too, and did you notice if you follow the first link in every page it eventually either loops or gets to the page Scratch? :)
@EIephant_Lover: It's not on purpose, but it's easily explainable - the delay is the time it takes for your browser to fetch the content of the page so that it can show a snippet of that content. It's not like the extension pre-loads the content of all pages that are linked to!

Why doesn't the "CodeMirror" thing always work?

Yes Known Bug Sometimes, I'll start editing, and notice that the little rainbow wheel shows up, and when it does, the code and wiki markup show in different colors. If you hover over it, it says "Disable CodeMirror (Syntax highlight)". If you click it, everything is shown as plain text and the wheel turns black, and it says "Enable" instead of "Disable". I know what it does and what it's for, but sometimes it doesn't even show up. It's weird and inconsistent, since I was testing it out and it isn't showing up now but it is in a different Community Portal discussion.

I don't know for sure either - I speculated before, I believe, that it had something to do with how CodeMirror decides when to show itself, and that the method it used involved the URL address. A quick Google search doesn't turn up anything useful... I suppose we'll just have to treat it as a known bug for now.

VisualEditor extension

Everyone knows that wiki markup is difficult to understand, and frankly, it disconnects users from the actual content. Though previewing is possible, it's annoying to do frequently, and some people don't even use it at all.

Therefore, I propose we get VisualEditor. This allows editing of pages without having to interact with wikitext at all - select some text, press Ctrl+B, and it becomes bold right in front of your eyes! Type in {{, and a menu will pop up asking which template you want to add.

I feel like this would help a lot for new users who might not feel like learning a whole markup language.

There is a prerequisite - I need to make sure that the SWS is compatible with it. But otherwise, I think this would be very helpful to install.

Thoughts?

I definitely like this idea.

There is a large prerequisite I didn't notice before: This requires Parsoid to be installed. This may pose a larger challenge - especially for FTP backend people, Parsoid can only be installed via command-line.

I‘m not sure if Parsoid will be possible at our webspace. We have to ask akhof.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── +1 I think that having an editor similar to Wikia would be nice.

Isn't mw in a beta phase for this?
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  14:36, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
The extension is in beta phase and the wikimedia foundation is testing it as a beta to include it as a default extension. Also if we do get it we have to upgrade mediawiki so it's probably best to get it when we have another transfer.
Jakel181 (talk | contribs) 19:25, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Are we doing this???
I also remember that there is still an option to work with syntax. Although the default in the editor is the visual editor, you can change the default in preferences. This is a tip for those who would want to opt-out.
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  20:18, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
There is indeed an option to use wikitext, one that I would likely enable considering I've been editing without VisualEditor for two years... but the reason this has mostly fallen stagnant is because Parsoid is difficult at best to get installed on our systems (we don't really have the kind of access required to install things like it). I'm sniffing around but for now I'm not sure how to move forward with this.

Would HTML still be allowed?
DogCatPuppyLover (talk | contribs) 17:41, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, read my previous reply....
You can choose which editor you want to set as default, as well as switch between each for previewing purposes.
12944qwerty Logo.png 12944qwerty  Talk  Contribs  Scratch  18:18, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
No, HTML has never been allowed. What you think is HTML is actually just HTML-like syntax. Wikitext, what this markup actually is, would still be allowed, as I said in my last reply.

Oof, I was thinking of wikitext HTML.

Should we mark this as done and then make a new topic once we find a way to instal VE?
NYCDOT Logo.jpg NYCDOT [ Talk Page | Contributions | Directory ] 22:19, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
I suppose so. Yes Not possible yet, but will install when possible.

The deletion of Two Pages

I added the Delete template two pages and would like an admin to take action. First of all Days Since 2000. First do all we don’t need a redirect with brackets and I don’t think anybody would search that. Secondly Scratch Wiki:April Fools/Stretch. It was created for a redirect page but now doesn’t work with the redirect so it has no use.

Yes Done - in the future either post here or add the template, not both as that's redundant, thanks

Please don't use external links to internal pages! You link to files (without using them) by adding a colon in front of the "File:" part: File:Scratch 3.0 Program.png
