Scratch Hall of Fame - Animation, formerly known as Animation Hall of Fame, is a studio created by Scratcher StarWarsFan02. As its name suggests, the studio contains animations.

The studio received significant attention from the greater Scratch community when, in March 2014, the Scratch Team was contacted by the trademark holder for the name "Animation Hall of Fame", which was being used for a museum, and were asked to rename the studio to something else. While the Scratch Team disagreed with the proposal, they agreed to change the studio's name anyway because they did not want to engage in a legal battle with the museum.[1]

History

In a Google search for "Animation Hall of Fame", the museum's website is the first result, but the Scratch studio was also listed. The museum apparently viewed this as a violation of their trademark, and asked the Scratch Team to change the name. On March 13, 2014, the Scratch Team originally renamed it to "Scratch Animation Hall of Fame",[2] but received more complaints from the museum.[3] The name was therefore changed to "Scratch Hall of Fame - Animation". However, by January 1st, 2018, in a Google Search, the studio moved up to second on the list.

Reactions

On March 20, the Scratch Team posted an announcement entitled "Trademark and the Scratch online community" explaining the situation, and their view on the matter. Most Scratchers supported the Scratch Team's position, with some even saying that they would boycott the museum.[4][5] Some users joked about it, creating hypothetical humourous-sounding headlines.[6] Comparisons were also made to the Removed Pac-Man Project.[7][8]

I guess this clarifies what should be pretty obvious: A webpage with some Scratch projects is not likely to be confused with a multimillion dollar museum.
