A Scratch Design Studio Curator, or an SDS Curator, is a curator selected to add projects to the Scratch Design Studio. The Scratch Design Studio is a themed studio run by the Scratch Team that appears on the front page and is changed approximately every month. All Scratch Design Studios are created by the account ScratchDesignStudio which is controlled by the Scratch Team.

Current Scratch Design Studio Curators

Main article: Scratch Mentor Program#Program Members

Currently, Scratch Design Studio Curators are from the Scratch Mentor Program, a tier of the Youth Leadership Lab. A small group of planners, who created the studio thumbnail and description, manage the studio. Other mentors are invited to curate the studio when it is created.

The subject of this article or section has changed dramatically and requires updating. Some information or images may not be accurate or relevant to the current version of Scratch, the Scratch website, or the article subject. (September 2025)
Specifically: The list below may not be completely updated with curators who did not sign up for the Scratch Mentor Program

The following were curators at one point, but were not active to fill out a form expressing interest for the Scratch Mentor Program to continue with the Scratch Design Studio. This form granted curators from before the mentor program’s creation access to the mentor program without needing to apply.

All Camp Counselors were curators of the Create with These Characters Scratch Design Studio.
Note Note: There have been other curators that retired, but some of them are unknown since they did not curate the studios until the update was added where people could curate studios.

Duties

Scratch Design Studio Curators do a variety of tasks relating to the program. They review and add projects, answer questions, choose new themes, and split into planning teams to create thumbnails and descriptions.

Reviewing and Adding Projects

One of the main duties of a Scratch Design Studio Curator is to add projects to the SDS. Curators have to review the project first, to make sure it is suitable for the front page, and that it fits the requirements of the Scratch Design Studio. It is not uncommon for a Scratch Design Studio Curator to not add a project, but when they do not, they notify the creator of the project that the project was not added for whatever reason, and sometimes ask them to repost the link when fixed. When a project is added, they also notify the creator, telling the user that their project has been added. This is to avoid confusion among the user and other curators. Curators may discuss specific projects they are not sure about with each other for help.

Answering Questions

Curators are also expected to answer questions other users have about the Scratch Design Studio, and about Scratch in general as well.

Choosing New Themes

The curators and the Scratch Team also choose future themes. Some studios are new and original ideas for themes, and some ideas chosen were submitted as a project in the "Propose Scratch Design Studio Themes!" studio.

Setting Up New Studios

When a theme has been officially chosen, the curators plan the studio, creating a thumbnail, description, and (sometimes) seed projects. The studio itself is created by the Scratch Team under the account ScratchDesignStudio. They often discuss their progress in the external forum.

Becoming a Curator

One can become a curator by applying for the Scratch Mentor Program. Applications for the program are posted in the Announcements forum.

Scratch Design Studio Helper

A Scratch Design Studio helper is a Scratcher who, through helping around in a Scratch Design Studio (answering questions, giving feedback, etc.), is invited to curate the studio that they helped in to solely add projects, answer questions, and give feedback. SDS helpers are not allowed to add their own projects, or add projects that weren't submitted to the studio. It is not a guarantee they will be invited to the new Scratch Design Studio after the original one they helped in, and it is not a guarantee that if one helps out in the studio they will get an invite. The Scratch Design Studio helpers curate the studios alongside Scratch Mentor Program members, while the planning team (within the Mentor Program) who created the given studio manages the studio.[2]

Helpers are different from curators as curators are from the Scratch Mentor Program and helpers are not.

Requirements

The SDS Team looks for Scratchers who follow the given requirements:

  • They must have the 'Scratcher' Status (as opposed to the "New Scratcher" Status - exceptions can be made, though rarely)
  • They must treat other Scratchers with respect and kindness
  • They must be actively engaged in the community
  • They must be showing interest in helping out
  • They must be trustworthy, meaning they always have followed the Community Guidelines and never harmed Scratch in any way
  • They must not be working generally just for the titles
  • They must be polite and friendly

Scratch Design Studio Translator

A Scratch Design Studio Translator is a Scratcher who is invited to help translate the current Scratch Design Studio. The role of the translators is to translate the description of the Scratch Design Studio, preferably within two weeks of it appearing on the front page.[3] Any user can translate the Scratch Design Studio if they can translate without the use of translation software.[4]

Curator Program Prior to the Scratch Mentor Program

Archive.png This article or section documents something not included in the current version of Scratch (3.0). It is only useful from a historical perspective.

Prior to the creation of the Scratch Mentor Program, curators were chosen from helpers and individuals involved in other parts of the community, like the Welcoming Committee. They were suggested by SDS curators to the Scratch Team when the Scratch Team felt a need to add more curators. They discussed in the SDS Forum and all planned every studio (instead of splitting into planning teams as the Scratch Mentor Program increased the size of the group).[5]
